Eric Bana stars as the eponymous Chopper, Australia’s most notorious and celebrated criminal figure, in what’s been lauded as the “performance of a lifetime”. This brutally gripping true-crime feature received critical acclaim on its original release in 2000, and now Andrew Dominik’s directorial debut is available as a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Second Sight Films. It is also available in a Standard Blu-ray format.
Dominik’s (Blonde, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) shocking and darkly entertaining film takes us into the violent world of Australia’s most infamous figure – Mark ‘Chopper’ Read – who conquered Victoria’s brutal underworld single-handedly, in a film based on his memoirs.
Bana shows his acting chops in this seminal, career defining role of bonafide villain Chopper, and he brings the outrageous true story to the screen with maximum force. The brutality and nonchalance of the life and crimes of the one-man mafia,...

For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.
In a way, any music biopic is off to a bad start, since there’s always going to be the curse of symmetry: everything must square with what we already know,...

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are composing the score for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black.
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson shared a few photos of her in the studio with the two musicians on Instagram, saying it was “a dream” to work with Cave and Ellis. In a statement, she added: “Nick and Warren were the only musicians in my mind to score Back to Black. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” may have access to the late singer’s globally recognized back catalog, but another legendary musician is lending his talents to the project.
Nick Cave, alongside his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, is scoring the StudioCanal and Focus Features film, which sees “Industry” star Marisa Abela play Winehouse. Abela is joined by a cast including Jack O’Connell (playing Blake Fielder-Civil), Eddie Marsan (Mitch Winehouse), Juliet Cowan (Janis Winehouse) and Lesley Manville.
Variety has been given an exclusive photo taken of Cave, Ellis and Taylor-Johnson recording in the studio earlier this week.
While Winehouse’s own songs, such as “Back to Black” (which featured in the recent trailer), “Valerie” and “Rehab” will undoubtedly take center stage in the film (with most recorded and performed by Abela), Cave and Ellis are understood to have composed about 20-30 minutes of music.

Awards season is here, which means it is also time for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, which aims to (dis)honor the least successful films of the year, has announced nominations for its 44th edition.
The most-nominated film is “Expend4bles,” the fourth entry in the action-packed, but critically underwhelming, “The Expendables” franchise. It received seven nominations. Tied for second place with five noms are “The Exorcist: Believer,” the revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a blood-soaked take on everyone’s favorite honey-loving bear. Two big-budget superhero movies, DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” both got four nominations.

Expend4bles leads the nominees for the Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — which were unveiled Monday morning.
The film earned seven nominations for the Razzie Awards, which honor the worst of the year and are announced annually ahead of the Oscars noms announcement, which takes place Tuesday morning.
Expend4bles is one of five movies competing for “worst picture” of the year. The nominees in that category, along with the Razzies’ comments, are:
— The Exorcist: Believer: “a 50-years-later remake/rip-off that was horrifying in unintended ways”
— Expend4bles: “another installment of a franchise that’s fading faster than Razzie ‘winner’ Donald Trump’s mental acuity”
— Meg 2: The Trench: “a fishy tale about a snarky shark that flopped across all seven seas”
— Shazam! Fury of the Gods: “one of 2023’s several comic book movies failing to save the superhero genre”

By now, you should be aware that Nick Cave is more than just a singer/songwriter, artist, and musician. On top of his many bands, The Bad Seeds, Birthday Party, and his solo projects, Cave has been involved in dozens of film projects; he and creative partner Warren Ellis have scored over two dozen films—for filmmakers like John Hillcoat, David McKenzie, David Michôd, and Taylor Sheridan—and he’s been the featured player in two documentaries by Andrew Dominik (Cave and Ellis’ score to the “Assassination of Jesse James” remains one of the decades best).

Ari Aster's 2018 film "Hereditary" contains a great deal of shadow-lurking, a scene of spontaneous human combustion, several decapitations, allusions to demonic powers, and at least one Satanic cult. However, if one were to ask a "Hereditary" fan about the film, they would mention Toni Collette's amazing performance before any of the above elements. They will also likely recall the scenes of sheer panic, the harrowing sense of guilt, and the unnerving presence of actor Milly Shapiro as the scary young Charlie. This is, of course, the way Aster wanted it. "Hereditary" may have supernatural elements, but it is, first and foremost, a story about the breakdown of the family unit. It's about intergenerational trauma and how our most grievous pains are handed directly to us by our mothers. It's a nightmare, but more in the Freudian sense.

Britney Spears's memoir is both a horror story and a cautionary tale. There's a lot to take away from it, but at its core, it's a story about a woman whose bodily autonomy was essentially stripped from her at a young age - by her parents, by the media, by her partners, and by the world at large.
"The Woman in Me" is definitely Spears's story, but it's also a story that's been repeated in various forms many times before. After reading it, sitting in a state of semi-shock while digesting the horrors Spears went through, I found myself thinking of Andrew Dominik's nightmarish 2022 film, "Blonde," which portrays a dramatized version of Marilyn Monroe's life. That film arguably exploited Monroe's legacy and repeated some of the same mistakes it tried to criticize, but it also tells the story of a woman whose appearance was commodified...

Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was “devastated” when Warner Bros. announced that “Dune: Part Two” was shifting its release date from Nov. 2023 to March 2024.
“I was really ready to start talking about it,” he tells Variety. However, the move means he can focus his attention on his other film, Gareth Edwards’ $80 million visual spectacular “The Creator.”
Fraser shared co-cinematographer duties with Oren Soffer on the film, taking an experimental approach to shooting futuristic landscapes. The production aimed to create the grandness and visual scale of a huge blockbuster film, but on a more modest budget. And he achieved it.
“Gareth and wanted to maximize everyone’s toil on this,” Fraser shares. “So, when we put two actors in a room together with a camera, we looked at how many people we really needed standing outside.”
Next, the pair spent extensive time ahead of production figuring out the infrastructure of the shoot.

After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence.
Spanning 14 years in the life of Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), from her meeting Elvis (Jacob Elordi), the rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob she idolized near the German army base where he was stationed (when he was 24 and she was just 14), to her leaving their lavish Memphis home after the dissolution of their marriage, this is the most ambitious film Coppola has made to date. At times when we see some films on the big screen we are mesmerized by their beauty. But others add in performances to complement this beauty. This is one of those films that is stuck in the middle of it. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford begins with some shots of the clouds moving at a brisk pace taking in with most of the shallow inequities of this dreamy town where Jesse James (Brad Pitt) resides. The whole starting sequence is more like a dream of the character who was an impending nightmare about to happen.
The first phase of the movie deals with the last crime Jesse commits with his gang and the consequences of what happens in this incident. His brother who begins to distance himself from him makes a big dent in Jesse James’ mind. This leaves him distraught and almost helpless. He...

Marilyn Monroe’s estate has been saved by the City of Los Angeles.
Monroe, who purchased her only property in 1962, died at her Brentwood house at age 36 the same year. The house is a 2,624-square-foot Spanish-style four-bedroom home, which the “Seven Year Itch” actress bought for $77,500 following her divorce from playwright Arthur Miller in February 1962.
Monroe’s house was purchased by the Glory of the Snow LLC in 2017 for $7.25 million; a trust of the same name bought the property for $8.35 million in July 2023 and filed for a Department of Building and Safety demolition permit to tear it down.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles City Council intervened after the demolition permit was granted September 5. The Council meeting September 8 voted unanimously to suspend the permit and preserve the home.
“Unfortunately, the Department of Building and Safety issued a demolition permit before my team and I could fully intervene and get this issue resolved,...

When the companies behind Ira Sachs’ new drama about the shifting currents of intimacy in a troubled love triangle submitted Passages to the Motion Picture Association ratings board, they probably anticipated an R.
But the MPA came back with an Nc-17 rating, forcing the distributor to release the film (which premiered at Sundance earlier this year) unrated rather than risk commercial marginalization or impose cuts that would diminish its intensity. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sachs painted the MPA as an outmoded relic of the 1950s, detecting a strong whiff of dangerous cultural censorship and possible homophobia behind the seldom issued Nc-17.
Let’s be clear: Passages — which Mubi opened Aug. 4 in Los Angeles and New York before expanding to other cities in the weeks to come — is a movie with a generous amount of sex, both gay and straight. But it’s neither particularly explicit nor remotely gratuitous,...

Filmmaker Ira Sachs has spoken out against the Motion Picture Association’s Nc-17 rating of his Sundance film “Passages,” slamming the ratings board as “anti-progress” and saying that he will not recut his film to earn an R rating and will instead release the film unrated with distributor Mubi.
“There’s no untangling the film from what it is,” Sachs told The Los Angeles Times. “It is a film that is very open about the place of sexual experience in our lives. And to shift that now would be to create a very different movie.”
“Passages,” which premiered at Sundance this year, follows a same-sex couple, Tomas and Martin (Franz Rogowski and Ben Whishaw), whose relationship is upended when Tomas has an affair with a woman named Agathe (Adèle Exarchapoulos). Howard Hawks’ eye-catching comedy sees the actor at the height of her talents in a tale with more depth and intellect than even its director knew
Last year’s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde broke up its parade of visceral suffering heaped upon the woman born Norma Jeane Mortenson with an acknowledgement of one injustice not of the physically invasive persuasion.
We learn that while working on Howard Hawks’ superlative Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (which turns 70 years old this weekend), she received a paltry rate of $500 a week, while her comparatively better-known co-45star Jane Russell raked in a sum-total fee in the amount of $200,000. On this point, director Andrew Dominik clearly conveys his thesis that the industry used and abused a woman ill-equipped to advocate for herself, and for once, he does it without joining in on that which he purports to critique by lavishing punishments upon star Ana de Armas.

Roger Deakins wasn’t onboard with how “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” train sequence was turning out.
The Oscar-winning cinematographer reflected on the iconic scene from the 2007 film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, namely calling out how “frustrated” he was over the “dinky” train used for historical purposes on set. The sequence in question involves Jesse James (Pitt) staging an elaborate robbery of a train during the first act of the Andrew Dominik film.
“I’ve got to say, Andrew and I got kind of frustrated because we couldn’t really find a train line that we liked and we couldn’t find a period train to the scale that Andrew wanted,” Deakins said during a panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y. “We ended up shooting in Edmonton [in Alberta, Canada] on a museum line and luckily it goes through this little wooded area, but the train was really dinky.

Playing Beau Wassermann, the character who gives Ari Aster’s third feature its name, Joaquin Phoenix goes balls to the wall in a performance of astonishing intensity that holds nothing back. Beau lives next door to a peep show emporium called Ejectus Erectus, and at one point is informed by a medic that his abnormally distended testicles are cause for concern, which is just one of many indications that this guy badly needs to — how to put it delicately? — oh heck, shoot a load.
Three hours that definitely put the odd in odyssey, Beau Is Afraid could be said to suffer from the same bloat, wandering through bizarre detours of varying effectiveness before arriving at a wonderfully overripe operatic climax elevated by Patti LuPone as the Lydia Tár of single mothers. But even if its pacing is uneven, this is a movie of undeniably impressive big swings.

Ana de Armas is continuing her in-demand status with a slew of upcoming projects.
The 2023 Oscar nominee may have admitted that her provocative turn as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” wasn’t meant to be enjoyed, but her filmography has spoken for itself. Since breaking out stateside in 2015 erotic thriller “Knock Knock” opposite Keanu Reeves, de Armas has become a Bond girl, transformed into an American icon, and cemented her A-list status as an Academy Award nominee. She went on to appear in “Blade Runner 2049” and “Knives Out,” while also making a trio of films with co-star Chris Evans, including upcoming action comedy “Ghosted.”
The “No Time to Die” actress previously said that there is “no need” for a female take on James Bond, and perhaps it’s because as a certified action star, de Armas already is a Bond in her own right.

A long awards season ended with a long but satisfying Academy Awards show. Along the way, stars were born, careers were revived and legends fell by the wayside to make room for upstarts.
The season, of course, was dominated by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which slowly turned from a potential nominee to a dominant frontrunner, and then to a record-setting winner with more above-the-line Oscars than any film in history.
So of necessity, this timeline of 10 moments that defined the season will include “Everything” almost everywhere.

The 2023 Razzie Awards winners are in.
Before the gongs were given out for the best flicks at Sunday’s 2023 Oscars, the Razzies honoured what they considered to be the worst.
“Blonde”, starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, led this year’s noms with eight, while Machine Gun Kelly’s “Good Mourning” nabbed seven, and “Blonde” ended up “winning” the Worst Picture award.

Despite “Elvis” winning multiple gongs over awards season, the Razzies handed Tom Hanks the Worst Supporting Actor “honour” for the movie.
Other big winners included “Morbius”, Disney’s “Pinocchio”, and… themselves.

No matter who wins Best Actress tonight, one thing is for certain, we’ll be remembering Andrew Dominik’s edgy, warts all Nc-17 biopic of Marilyn Monroe, and Ana de Armas fearless portrayal of the big screen bombshell years from now.
Asked tonight on the Oscar red carpet about what the toughest part was of getting into Monroe’s skin, de Armas said the trick was “to trust the process and the work that had been done previously.”
She added that by “taking that pressure off my shoulders and let it happen, and know that the director and the team was — we were all working toward the same goal, and everyone was very passionate about it.”
Deadline film reviewer Damon Wise beamed about the Netflix movie out of Venice, “Blonde takes a blowtorch to the entire concept of the Hollywood biopic and arrives at something almost without precedent.”

Blonde and Elvis were among the winners at the 2023 Golden Raspberry Awards.
The awards, known as the Razzies, take place the weekend of the Academy Awards and celebrate the very ‘worst’ in film.
While many of the films nominated did not make it near this year’s Oscars, there is some crossover, with Ana de Armas’s Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde picking up the gong for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay. De Armas is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for her performance in the film.
This year’s Razzies were mired with controversy following backlash for their decision to nominate 12-year-old Firestarter star Ryan Kiera Armstrong for Worst Actress.
Writing in The Independent, Jacob Stolworthy said that “to nominate an Oscar winner, or someone with proven bankable success to their name, is acceptable; to highlight the performance of someone as young as 12 is not just tacky – it’s fairly reprehensible”.

The Golden Raspberry Awards gave itself a trophy for the first time in the ceremony’s 43-year history.
“For nominating someone that should not have been considered, a blunder that was put through the blender and pulverized from one corner of the internet to the other and all media in between, instead of handing out a Worst Actress statuette this year, we’re giving this Razzie to the Razzies,” said announcer Bill A. Jones in a winners’ video, which you can see above.
In January, the Razzies faced backlash for nominating 12-year-old “Firestarter” actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong. In addition to apologizing and raising the minimum age to 18, the awards body replaced her nomination with its own name – and won by “a landslide.”

Blonde has been “honored” with two Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — which also bestowed an award upon themselves for the first time in the group’s history.
Andrew Dominik’s film, which led the Razzies with eight nominations, won worst picture of the year along with worst screenplay for Dominik. The Razzies called the film “misogynistic, salacious and fallacious” and said it “shamelessly exploits the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.”
The Razzie Awards, which honor the worst of the year, are announced annually ahead of the Oscars ceremony, which takes place Sunday. Incidentally, Blonde star Ana de Armas is up for best actress in a leading role at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Blonde starring the Oscar-nominated Ana de Armas took the big prize — Worst Picture — as well as Worst Screenplay for writer-director Andrew Dominick among the winners announced for the 43rd annual Razzie Awards.
Tom Hanks, meanwhile, now has two Razzie statuettes to pair with his Oscars.
Hanks, “who’s spent his career stretching his acting capabilities to great success, went a bridge too far with his version of Col. Tom Parker in the otherwise excellent biopic, Elvis,” Razzie organizers said. As a result, he won for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo (for Hanks and his latex face).
It actually could have been worse for Hanks, believe it or not, since he was also nominated in the Worst Actor category for his turn as Geppetto in Disney’s Pinocchio. That category was instead won by Hanks’ fellow Oscar winner Jared Leto for Morbius. Leto’s co-star Adria Arjona received Worst Supporting Actress.

Hollywood Flashback: Michelle Williams Brought Marilyn Monroe Back to Life in ‘My Week With Marilyn’
Michelle Williams racked up her fifth Oscar nomination this year, for playing Mitzi Fabelman, a version of Steven Spielberg’s mother in his semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans. A decade ago, bringing screen legend Marilyn Monroe to life in My Week With Marilyn earned Williams her third nod.
The 2011 Simon Curtis biopic follows Monroe’s experience in London while making The Prince and the Showgirl with director and co-star Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). THR‘s David Rooney wrote in his review: “Michelle Williams gives a layered performance that goes beyond impersonation…[she] gets us on intimate terms with one of Hollywood’s most enduring and tragic icons…her work alone keeps the movie entertaining.”
Preparation for the role demanded intense research. “It’s lonely, lonely work,” Williams told THR in November 2011 of studying extensive footage of Monroe but shared how she discovered “Marilyn Monroe was a character she played, like a Groucho Marx...

In a new interview, Best Actress nominee Ana de Armas addressed the negative reviews of her film “Blonde,” which was lambasted by many critics and general viewers as well. The Netflix drama scored a 42% critical grade on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences rated it at 32%.

A diamond may be a girl’s best friend but Ana de Armas knew “Blonde” wasn’t going to make fans easily.
The controversial reimagining of Marilyn Monroe was written and directed by Andrew Dominik and quickly caused debates over the portrayal of the late film star, abortion, and sexual assault. “Blonde” debuted at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival where it received a 14-minute standing ovation. The Nc-17 rated Netflix film stateside, however, was met with less than open arms.
“When we premiered the movie in Venice, or San Sebastián, [the reaction was much warmer than the reception was in the U.S.]. Of course, the reaction that gets the most attention is the one in the U.S., but that wasn’t the whole experience,” de Armas told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s hard to hear these reactions, but you can always go back to what you experienced, and why you did it, and the reasons why you were attracted to the project.

Blonde was one of the most talked-about movies of last year, but almost exclusively through a negative lens. While overseas it fared quite well–even vying for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival–once American viewers got wind of the content, it would be a bumpy ride for the Netflix movie.
But star Ana de Armas, who played Marilyn Monroe (and exponentially better than anyone else has attempted), knew it wouldn’t be for everyone, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “As hard as it is to hear when people don’t like your film, it is what it is. It was not a movie that was made to please people or to make people like it. It is a hard movie to watch.” Director Andrew Dominik previously spoke about Blonde’s reception, saying he was surprised at just how angry and upset American viewers were over the movie.

It is a hard movie to watch.” Director Andrew Dominik previously spoke about Blonde’s reception, saying he was surprised at just how angry and upset American viewers were over the movie.

Ana de Armas has spoken out in defence of the 2022 movie Blonde, in which she played movie star Marilyn Monroe.
When the film’s trailer was first released, many accused it of exploitation, and its director Andrew Dominik said: “If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f***ing audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”
After seeing the movie, The Independent’s Amanda Whiting argued: “Dominik’s fictionalised biopic of the tragic movie star doesn’t just fail Marilyn Monroe herself, but its use of a talking foetus begging not to be aborted – yes, really – sinks the film into new depths of invasiveness.”
Many, however, adored the film, which received a 14-minute standing ovation at its world premiere in Venice.
Now, lead star de Armas has defended the movie and opened up about what it felt like to read the criticisms of it.

Ana de Armas’ casting in Blonde was an intriguing risk from the get-go — she even says so herself: “It was against all odds that a Cuban actress was ever going to play Marilyn Monroe.” Add to that the nature of writer-director Andrew Dominik’s script — adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel, which does not shy away from speculation or the imagined darker, violent parts of Monroe’s life — and the movie was all but guaranteed to cause a stir.
When Blonde premiered at the Venice International Film Festival over the summer, the Nc-17-rated film garnered a 14-minute standing ovation, though reception to the movie since has been decidedly more polarized. Some critics and audiences have taken issue with the film’s creative liberties with Monroe’s story, including scenes of sexual assault and graphic violence. But de Armas has been hailed as a tour de force, as evidenced...

Roger Deakins is as celebrated as cinematographers come. His work on everything from "No Country For Old Men," to "Blade Runner 2049" has elevated him to a status few others in his field attain. The man can seemingly do no wrong — unless you're Quentin Tarantino, who's railed against digital cameras while Deakins has fully embraced them.
But among Deakins' seemingly endless triumphs of cinematography, there's one that remains somewhat of an outlier. 2007's "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford'' is regarded by most who've seen it as one of the finest films of the 21st Century. Andrew Dominik's haunting, elegiac take on the Western sought to portray its titular character in a starkly unembellished way, so as to undermine the myth of him being a hero of the Old West. And Deakins' thoughtful and confident cinematography only helped to enhance the film's reflective tone.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been in and out of the news a lot lately. From its ruthless new attitude toward its films and shows to its perpetual (yet worrisome) money games, there's reason to be concerned — that is, if you're one to keep tabs on that sort of thing. Recent drama aside though, Warner's streaming platform, HBO Max, still boasts one of the strongest catalogs in the game. Even with the merciless culling and routine roster rotations, there's still a ton of good to discover each month.
March will signal another shake-up for the streaming library: HBO Max will be removing quite a few movies and shows this month. Fortunately, there's still plenty of time to check out some of the best projects before they're gone. Let's take a look at the best movies and shows leaving HBO Max in March.

David Fincher has checked the pulse of “Mindhunter” and confirms its dead, gone, and buried.
Fincher, who executive produced the series and helmed seven episodes, confirmed that the serial killer-centric show was ultimately too costly for Netflix.
“I’m very proud of the first two seasons, but it’s a particularly expensive series and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment,” Fincher told Le Journal du Dimanche. “I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”
“Mindhunter” premiered in 2017 with Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany playing two FBI agents who set up a unit to begin the practice of criminal profiling in the 1970s. The series was based on the 1995 book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit,” written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

There are many gorgeous-looking films in this year’s Oscar race, but even with 10 films nominated for Best Picture, only five films could be recognized for their production design, a role that plays a large part in the overall look of a film, along with cinematography.
Besides designing and drafting and deciding what needs to be built on soundstages, the production designer also is involved very early on in finding the best locations and hiring the rest of the art department, including the set decorator, who is responsible for dressing up said locations.

Four of the five nominees this year are also nominated for Best Picture, while the nomination for Damien Chazelle‘s “Babylon” is one of only three nominations it received, and it didn’t make the cut for the top prize.
