If, like me, you enjoyed Annaleigh Ashford as the daffy romantic factory worker in Kinky Boots (for which she won a Clarence Derwent award) and loved her as the talentless balletomane in You Can’t Take It With You (for which she won a Tony), wait until you catch the crotch-sniffing aria she’s performing now at the Cort. Rarely has an actor so fully committed to the business of exploring another’s genitalia, at least onstage; she really digs around in there, yelping with pleasure and causing the audience to do so, too. Perhaps I should mention that she’s playing a dog: the probable-labradoodle title character of A.R. Gurney’s 1995 comedy Sylvia, now having its Broadway premiere. Ashford gives a comic-genius performance, establishing herself as a full-fledged clown star, meaning she’s not only hilarious and eccentric but able to project both qualities, as well as an undertone of pathos,...

What a difference a year makes.
Last year at this time, we were excited that actor Michael Urie was going to be back on our televisions in the CBS sitcom, Partners. Unfortuantely the series premiered last fall to not-so-great reviews and low ratings, so CBS pulled it quickly.
Not one to be down and out for long, Urie is busy promoting his directorial film debut, He’s Way More Famous Than You, which was written by Halley Feiffer and Urie’s partner Ryan Spahn and co-stars Jesse Eisenberg, Vanessa Williams, Mamie Gummer, Ben Stiller and Ralph Macchio. The former Ugly Betty star also is wowing audiences off-Broadway with his one-man show Buyer & Cellar. The Jonathan Tollins play about a young man who takes a job at Barbra Streisand‘s underground personal mall (and meets the lady herself) did so well in its initial run that it’s moving to a larger theater beginning next month.

Mercedes Ruehl is returning to Broadway after a seven-year absence, starring in Manhattan Theatre Club's revival of Richard Greenberg's The American Plan, a 1990 play set in a 1960s Catskills resort. Ruehl plays Eva Adler, a highly intelligent German woman who's obsessively involved with her emotionally unstable daughter (Lily Rabe). Eva isn't easy to play, and that's why Ruehl likes her. The character is a far cry from Stevie, the stunned, enraged, belittled wife in Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?, Ruehl's last show on Broadway. She's even further removed from the sweet, mentally limited Bella in Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers, for which Ruehl won a Tony Award. In playing Eva, Ruehl finds herself influenced by Irene Worth, who portrayed Bella's mother -- a figure not unlike Eva. "There are certain inflections, and the way I hold my mouth," she says in describing the similarities.
