After a bit of a career detour to win a couple Oscars, filmmaker Peter Farrelly is back with his first full-fledged comedy in a decade: Ricky Stanicky, starring Zac Efron and John Cena.
Now available to stream on Prime Video, the Amazon comedy follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends (Jermaine Fowler and Andrew Santino) who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky to blame for their various hijinks. When their romantic partners finally want to meet him, the buddies hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to become Ricky.
Ricky Stanicky returns Farrelly to the ribald comedy genre, which he and brother Bobby Farrelly became synonymous with in the 1990s, thanks to hits like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. Their most recent co-directing effort was 2014’s sequel, Dumb and Dumber To. Peter Farrelly has stayed busy as a solo director, helming 2018’s Green Book,...

Three years ago, Screen Gems and Entertainment One’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones failed to ignite a newfound Ya franchise in the way the studios had hoped. But in circling back to Cassandra Clare’s novel series and all the human-angel hybrids within, Freeform has crafted a new spin on the source material in the form of Shadowhunters.
With a first season now under its belt and a cult audience in tow, the network has renewed the sci-fi series for a second outing, ensuring that it will outlive its cinematic brethren after all.

Can Shadowhunters come back from its disappointing first episode? Here's our review of The Mortal Instruments TV opener...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 The Mortal Cup
Lots of pilot episodes seem a bit clunky. They’ve got a fair amount of setting up to do, after all – the first episode of anything needs to introduce its audience to a setting, to characters, and, if the show’s got any kind of sci-fi or fantasy element, to the rules of its universe. So sometimes you get a bit more telling than showing, and some on-the-nose dialogue. That’s generally forgivable. But in the case of Shadowhunters, its first episode was so awkward it might be hard to come back from it.
To give it its due, it gets the first part out of the way quickly and fairly elegantly. The opening sequence establishes that this is a magical world...

With October now upon us and the nights beginning to darken – in the Northern Hemisphere, at least – we’re standing on the verge of a brand new season of television now that The Walking Dead season 6 and other such heavy-hitters are close to debut. And though it isn’t due to premiere until early 2016, ABC Family unveiled a teaser for its Shadowhunters series during New York Comic-Con, which is available online for your viewing pleasure.
Taking inspiration from Cassandra Clare’s supernatural series The Mortal Instruments, Shadowhunters is the TV equivalent of a phoenix rising from the ashes. Two years ago, Screen Gems released a big-screen feature film called City of Bones, and while a direct sequel was planned, a measly box office return put paid to that plan, meaning that ABC’s adaptation is the natural evolution of the studio’s stunted cinematic series.

Fans of Cassandra Clare's popular fantasy book series, The Mortal Instruments, don't have to wait much longer. ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) has just released an exclusive first look at their anticipated television adaptation of Clare's series, Shadowhunters.
The idea for a TV show version of the books comes after the cancelation of a planned film franchise. Constantin Film, the producers for the 2013 film adaptation, will continue as producers of the TV series, with Ed Decter and McG serving as executive producers.
Shadowhunters will follow the journey of Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) who discovers she isn't just your average human 18-year-old, but rather a shadowhunter—a human-angel hybrid warrior that battles demons.
The first season of Shadowhunters has been picked up for 13 episodes and will premiere in early 2016.

The German powerhouse is having another crack at part of Cassandra Clare’s bestselling series The Mortal Instruments and will launch sales in October on the drama series Shadowhunters.
Constantin was involved in the 2013 adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, inspired by Clare’s (pictured) books. That film opened in 2013 and performed well below expectations on $31.2m in the Us via Sony, faring slightly better internationally where $59.4m through Mister Smith distributors boosted the global haul to $90.6m.
The German company has set a Shadowhunters buyers screening on October 6. The move comes as Constantin branches out into Us drama, with Los Angeles-based advisor Gary Marenzi handling international sales.
McG, Ed Decter and Robert Kulzer serve as executive producers on the story of a young woman who discovers she belongs to an elite order of humans with angelic blood tasked with defending humanity from demons.

Young Adult literary adaptations have dominated the movie box office for some time now – with titles such as Twilight, The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner all generating their own cinematic franchises. It was inevitable that television would find a way to jump on that gravy train, and ABC Family has ordered their version – Shadowhunters – straight to series, with McG at the helm of the pilot episode.
Shadowhunters is a television spinoff from the 2013 film The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, which was adapted from the book of the same name by Cassandra Clare. That book is the first of a series of six Young Adult fantasy novels, which itself fits into a larger series of writing, titled The Shadowhunter Chronicles. The series is built around the character of Clarissa “Clary” Fray – a teenager who makes surprising discoveries about her identity and her parentage. Perhaps TV audiences will be kinder than moviegoers. After The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones went embarrassingly belly-up at the box office in the summer of 2013, Constantin Film was left in quite an unenviable position, having already planned a follow-up film that it was then forced to pull the plug on. Now, it appears that the Ya supernatural fantasy series, based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, are getting another shot at success in the form of an ABC Family series titled Shadowhunters.
Like City of Bones, the show is expected to focus on 18-year-old Clary Fray, who discovers on her birthday that she is descended from Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids tasked with hunting down monstrous demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped by forces of darkness, Clary is thrown headfirst into a supernatural New York City populated by faeries, vampires, werewolves and other fantastical denizens. So, "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" didn't become the next big Ya franchise hit when it opened in 2013, taking in a meager $90 million worldwide. That effectively killed the mooted sequel, "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Ashes," which was originally planned to shoot last year, but there's no such thing as a dead brand anymore. Last fall, word arrived that Cassandra Clare's book series would make its way to television, and indeed, the wheels are very much in motion. THR reports that ABC Family has given a straight-to-series order for "Shadowhunters." Ed Decter ("Helix," "Unforgettable," "The Client List") will be the showrunner and executive producer for the thirteen-episode first season, and it sounds like they will be starting the story over and pretending the movie never happened. So yes, you'll learn all about human-angel hybrid Clary Fray who has to fight demons with Jace and Simon all over again.

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...
