The legendary actress Dame Angela Lansbury, who has delivered memorable performances in countless film roles from 1944 to 2017, died at the age of 96. She reportedly passed “peacefully in her sleep at home” early in the morning Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Known as one of the best character actresses of all time, Lansbury has performed with equal caliber in stories like the long-running mystery series Murder She Wrote, stage musicals like Sweeney Todd, and even some legendary animated films like Anastasia and Beauty and the Beast.

The sad news of the death of Angela Lansbury, just a few days shy of her 97th birthday, brought to an end one of the longest and most storied careers in Hollywood history. While she will perhaps be best remembered for the 265 episodes (and four feature-length movies) she spent playing best-selling mystery writer Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, a stint that earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most prolific amateur sleuth”, Lansbury packed her eight decades on stage and screen with a host of memorable roles. To each of them, she brought a whimsical humour and gentle warmth which could sometimes mask her deceptively sharp wit.
Born on 16 October 1925 in Regent’s Park, London, Lansbury left Britain with her family after the onset of the blitz in 1940. Her mother, the Belfast-born actor Moyna Macgill, moved Lansbury and her brothers Bruce and Edgar to New York,...

The entertainment industry lost a legend today. The children of Dame Angela Lansbury have sadly had to announce that their mother has passed away at the age of 96 – just five days shy of her 97th birthday. According to the announcement, Lansbury “died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 Am today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022.”
Lansbury is best known for her twelve season, 264 episode run as author / crime solver Jessica Fletcher on the mystery series Murder, She Wrote – a role she went on to reprise in four made-for-tv movies. But when you look on her filmography, Murder, She Wrote is just one of 111 screen acting credits she earned during a career that stretched back to 1944.
Born in London on October 16, 1925, Lansbury is said to have “retreated into playing characters” after her politician father died of stomach cancer in 1935. She became interested in film while attending high school, and...

Which Bette Davis movies qualify for greatness? Her flawed character in this costume picture doesn’t conquer all, and it’s historically more sensitive than Gone With the Wind. It’s also William Wyler at the top of his form, creating in just 104 minutes a rich image of a long-gone world. Southern Belle Julie Marsden is a contrary troublemaker, a flip coquette who shoots her whole life to hell with just a couple of social gaffes. The story is ‘bigger than Bette’ – the apocalyptic finale is just a side event in a fable about the nature of chivalry and honor in a flawed social structure.

Viewers looking (desperately) for American leaders to admire can’t do better than to reflect on John Ford’s folksy, at least partly authentic honorarium to one of the greats. Henry Fonda is 100% dead-on as a vision of Abe Lincoln to bring tears to our eyes. Imagine . . . there’s such a thing as political integrity, or simply a person that puts the public good ahead of personal advantage. Criterion’s older extras are augmented with a fine new feature commentary by John Ford authority Joseph McBride.

Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles. There's more: Jeff Bridges delivers a colorful performance in...

The best part of the DVD-on-demand business (or Mod, as the studios call it) is that Warner Bros., Sony, and 20th Century Fox are unearthing rare titles from their vaults. Many have never been on home video in any form, and some haven’t ever had television exposure. My latest “discovery” is a 1934 Columbia title called Among the Missing, directed by Albert S. Rogell and written by Herbert Asbury and Fred Niblo, Jr., from a story by Florence Wagner. It stars Henrietta Crosman, Richard Cromwell, Billie Seward, and Arthur Hohl—not exactly an all-star lineup, unless you’ve seen Crosman’s memorable performance in John Ford’s Pilgrimage. Crosman was a veteran stage actress who made a...

One of the Most Amazing Silent Movies (or Movies of Any Era, Period) Ever Made Tops the List of Best of Movies Released in 1921 Rex Ingram’s The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Metro Pictures' film version of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s epic novel -- from a scenario by the immensely powerful writer-producer June Mathis -- catapulted Mathis’ protégé, the until then little known Rudolph Valentino (photo, left), to worldwide superstardom, as The Four Horsemen became one of the biggest box-office hits of the silent era. Ingram’s wife, the invariably excellent Alice Terry (right, dark-haired in real life; a light-haired in her many movies), played Valentino's love interest. Ninety-two years after its initial launch, the Four Horsemen remains a monumental achievement. Released by MGM, Vincente Minnelli's 1962 remake of this Metro Pictures production featured an all-star cast: Glenn Ford, Ingrid Thulin (dubbed by Angela Lansbury), Charles Boyer, Lee J. Cobb,...

After two men were arrested in the murder case of DJ Megatron, a few details over the robbery gone wrong are uncovered. New York Daily News reported that on Thursday, April 7, prosecutors unraveled that the Bet host was stalked by 21-year-old William Williams and 20-year-old Richard Cromwell for a block before being gunned down.
Both William and Richard were arrested on charges of murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon last Wednesday, April 6. Identified by witnesses and surveillance footage from the scene before and after the incident, the pair were held without bail and appeared in Staten Island Criminal Court the next day.
Words are, both suspects have confessed to the crime to prosecuting officials. William admitted he fired the fatal shot during a scuffle, while Richard reportedly was the one who stole the watch Megatron was wearing. During the 10-minute hearing on Thursday, however, the two men pleaded not guilty.

Randall Wallace netted a stellar cast for this exercise in making free, which locks French history screaming in a dungeon
Director: Randall Wallace
Entertainment grade: B-
History grade: Fail
During the reign of Louis Xiv, a mysterious masked man was kept prisoner for 34 years in the Bastille and other jails. His identity has never been established.
Identity
The film opens in a dungeon. "Are you dead yet?" grunts a jailer through a hatch, and then we see him: the man in the iron mask. The writer Voltaire claimed that the prisoner's mask was iron, but it seems he made it up. The only piece of first-hand evidence available reports that the mask was of black velvet. Identities suggested for the prisoner have included Richard Cromwell, the Duke of Beaufort, and an Italian diplomat. While he was busy making things up, Voltaire said that it might have been the king's secret brother.
