Louverture Films, the production company founded by actor Danny Glover and Joslyn Barnes, is moving into television as well as animation, gaming and installation works. With two new principal partners in situ, the expansion has enlisted a host of creatives, including directors Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Lucrecia Martel.
Co-founded by Glover and Barnes in 2005 — alongside long-time partners Susan Rockefeller and the Bertha Foundation’s Tony Tabatznik — the company has brought on board Sawsan Asfari and Jeffrey Clark as principal partners. Variety understands that the new partners will allow Louverture to access more funding resources.
In addition, producer Karin Chien, who on Sunday delivered a rousing Sundance Institute Producing Fellows’ keynote, is becoming a partner and executive VP. Meanwhile, Barnes has been promoted to president while Glover remains CEO and co-founder.
Louverture, named after Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint Louverture, has built its reputation on international and arthouse films and a strong theatrical documentary slate.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American distribution rights to President, directed by Camilla Nielsson (Democrats).
Produced by Danish company Final Cut For Real and U.S.-based Louverture Films, in co-production with Norway-based Sant & Usant, the film premiered to strong notices at the Sundance Film Festival.
Nielsson won a Special Jury Award for Verité Filmmaking in Park City. Greenwich is aiming to generate awards traction for the film with a December theatrical release.
The movie charts the dangerous aftermath of Robert Mugabe’s removal from power in Zimbabwe. British-Zimbabwean actor and activist Thandiwe Newton, who was named to the Queen’s New Year’s Honors List, receiving an OBE for services to film and charity, has joined documentary “President” as executive producer. The film won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival this year and will screen at AFI Docs on Thursday.
The film captures Zimbabwe at a crossroads. In the first election since the removal of Robert Mugabe, the new leader of the opposition Nelson Chamisa is challenging the dictator’s corrupt legacy, and his successor Emmerson “the crocodile” Mnangagwa. The election will be the ultimate test for both sides. How they interpret the principles of democracy, if they can inspire trust among the citizenry, not succumb to violence, and foster faith in institutions, will set the course for the future for the country.

Neon is continuing its busy streak and picked up the North American rights to the documentary “Gunda,” which premiered at the Berlinale festival and is executive produced by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, the studio announced Tuesday. It’s the first sale of a festival title.
“Gunda” is shot in mesmerizing black and white and follows a day in the life of some livestock on a farm, including a mother sow (the eponymous Gunda) two ingenious cows, and a scene-stealing, one-legged chicken in an artful, dialogue-free triptych.
“Gunda” was directed by the famed nature filmmaker of “Aquarela” Victor Kossakovsky. It made its world premiere in the new competitive section at the festival, Encounters, where it was nominated for the Berlinale Documentary Award.

Neon has acquired North American rights to “Gunda,” directed by “Aquarela” helmer Viktor Kossakovsky and executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix. The film made its world premiere in the Encounters section of the Berlin Film Festival. It is one of the few films in the festival this year to have closed a U.S. distribution deal so far.
“In ‘Gunda,’ Kossakovsky reminds us that we share our planet with billions of other animals,” according to a statement. “Through encounters with a mother sow (the eponymous Gunda), two ingenious cows, and a scene-stealing, one-legged chicken, Kossakovsky movingly recalibrates our moral universe, reminding us of the inherent value of life and the mystery of all animal consciousness, including our own.”
Jeff Deutchman negotiated the deal for Neon along with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. Cinephil is handling international sales.
Anita Rehoff Larsen produced “Gunda” for Sant & Usant; it is a co-production with Louverture Films.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North America, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Scandinavia, South Africa and India rights to Victor Kossakovsky’s Aquarela, a documentary that had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Dogwoof selling international rights on feature about long-lost film project.
Sundance Selects has snapped up Us rights to Göran Hugo Olsson’s That Summer ahead of its international premiere in the Berlinale Panorama documentary sidebar tonight (Feb 16).
Dogwoof sells international rights to the feature about a long-lost film project that photographer Peter Beard initiated in 1972 with Lee Radziwill, the younger sister of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, to chronicle her childhood on Long Island.
When Albert and David Maysles joined the crew, the focus shifted to Radziwill’s cousin Edith Bouvier Beale and her mother Edith Ewing Bouvier – the inspiration for Grey Gardens, which the Maysles would shoot several years later.
That Summer premiered at Telluride Film Festival last autumn and is produced by Oscar-nominated Strong Island producer Joslyn Barnes of Louverture Films, as well as Tobias Janson of Story, Nejma Beard of Thunderbolt Ranch Productions and Signe Byrge Sørensen for Final Cut for Real.

Written and directed by Lucrecia Martel, the Argentine auteur behind La Cineaga and The Headless Woman, Zama is the long-awaited adaptation of Antonio Di Benedetto’s classic of Latin American modernism.
Zama transports us to a remote corner of 18th-century South America where Zama, a servant of the Spanish crown, slowly loses his grip on reality. Zama brings a 21st century perspective to bear on the history of colonial catastrophe in the Americas. Marooned in an a colonial outpost, the titular Don Diego De Zama (a soulful yet funny Daniel Gimenez Cacho, Bad Education, Y Tu Mama narrator, Arrancame la vida) waits in vain for a transfer to a more prestigious post.
Martel, in a perfect coupling of literary source material and cinematic sensibility, renders Zama’s world as both absurd and mysterious as he succumbs more and more to lust, paranoia and a creeping disorientation. A fever dream, the...

“The real reason you’re giving Ted Danson this award tonight is that for more than 30 years he has been at this cause,” President Clinton said. He also spoke about the need to protect ocean ecosystems from the threat of climate change and discussed how healthy, sustainable fisheries can help feed the world’s population.
Ted Danson thanked President Clinton and the assembled crowd for his award. “I kept showing up,” he said. “Everything else was the people around me.”
“This life is not about you or about us,” Danson said. “It’s about stewardship of what we’ve been given.

While the forthcoming crime documentary Strong Island, debuting on Netflix in September, does attempt to answer long-lingering questions about a 1992 killing on Long Island, New York, the film is not focused on catching a killer.
Rather, the highly-personal directorial debut from Yance Ford chronicles the loss that shattered his family in the 20-plus years since his brother, a black 24-year-old teacher named William Ford Jr., was allegedly gunned down by a white 19-year-old who was never brought to trial.
The film is also a poetic rumination on race in America that simultaneously celebrates — and reclaims — William’s memory.

There is nothing new in the subject matters covered in Yance Ford’s debut. Gun violence. Authorities taking a blind eye approach. A family and community torn. Pretty much sight unseen (although a peak at the trailer helps), I’d be surprised if I’ll personally be able to withstand the emotionally walloping that Strong Island promises to deliver. Forget about dry eyes. We’ve been anticipating this docu since we first heard of the person (Filmmaker Mag’s Scott Macaulay Top 25 Faces profile), and ever since then, it’s been collecting massive support from the Sundance Institute, Cinereach, Idfa Forum and just last month, a major helping hand from the MacArthur Foundation Documentary Grant. We’re wishful that this lands at the top of ’15.
