In 2014, Naomi Watts voiced an animated version of herself in the “BoJack Horseman” episode “One Trick Pony.” The Watts in Hollywoo — the “BoJack” stand-in for the entertainment industry’s epicenter, inhabited mostly by anthropomorphic animals — is starring opposite BoJack in a biopic about his frenemy, Mr. Peanutbutter. She appears on set preparing to play Diane, a burgeoning writer. The meta joke is the actress accepted the part to get a break from emotionally draining, praiseworthy performances.
“I just keep getting pigeonholed as these complex characters in highly acclaimed movies,” the animated Watts bemoans to a character who is a parody of host Ryan Seacrest (A Ryan Seacrest Type). “For once, I would just love to phone it in and play a two-dimensional girl in a rom-com with no inner life of her own. That’s kind of the reason I got into this business.”
Ten years later, that tongue-in-cheek guest appearance now feels almost prophetic.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. Both actors learn that the project...

As any home media hunters of a certain age know, securing a VHS copy of David Lynch's 1977 debut feature "Eraserhead" was a Herculean task. Cassettes were rare, and the ones the public could access were typically living in libraries or video stores who would not sell them to you. If you were willing to shell out 80 to 100, in 1992 dollars, then maybe you could cut a deal. Some resourceful collectors could scoop up a well-worn Japanese LaserDisc, but only the more extreme collectors owned LaserDisc players. "Eraserhead" was, for many years, effectively out of print.
After the release of "Mulholland Drive" in 2001, however, Lynch began examining new types of media as well as the ever-growing DVD market and decided that it was high time to keep up with an evolving landscape. In 2002, Lynch -- owning the rights to "Eraserhead" as well as his early short films -- remastered and released a pair of tiffany DVDs,...

This is an excerpt from Melissa Anderson’s Inland Empire, available to order from Fireflies Press.Like the Avenging Angel – the Nikki/Susan avatar who delivers a long soliloquy teeming with tales of imperilment – I often don’t know what was before or after in Inland Empire no matter how many times I’ve watched it. Recursive episodes proliferate in the film. At least three times Nikki/Susan dissociates, looking at another version of herself from another vantage point. At one point the Avenging Angel enters an empty movie palace, here a de facto hall of mirrors: she sees herself onscreen saying, ‘Watchin’ it, like in a dark theatre.’ That nearly vacant cinema instantly recalls Mulholland Drive’s Club Silencio, the mystical cabaret that Betty and Rita, desire-drunk after having sex, cab to in the middle of the night – and where their love story, if not their very identities, begins to unravel.

"It is way more beautiful to watch a rhinoceros be a rhinoceros, than try to be an elephant." Gunpowder & Sky has unveiled an official trailer for another amusing contemporary take on the classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac" called It Takes Three, the latest from actor / filmmaker Scott Coffey. This young love romantic comedy is described as a "John Hughes spin" on the Cyrano de Bergerac story. When Chris, the coolest guy in school discovers that Roxy sees through his popularity and good looks, he enlists Cy to reverse catfish her-letting him take over his social media accounts. Signals are crossed, hearts are broken, but in this "post-modern rom-com," nothing turns out as you'd expect. It Takes Three stars Jared Gilman (from Moonrise Kingdom), with Aurora Perrineau, Mikey Madison, David Gridley, and Monk Serrell Freed. This looks sweet and kinda funny, but not that original in the end. Though I admit...

Trying to figure out what happened to various actors can certainly give a person a headache as they try to discover just what kind of trajectory an actor’s career took at one point that would make it necessary to try and find them again. Scott Coffey is an actor that turned to directing and screenwriting at various times in his career as he continued to stick around. To date, it sounds as though he’s been doing what he can to stick around as he continues to be a part of the entertainment industry while finding roles that will suit him

Nope, no Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks this week. I think the solution to her ever-deepening mystery won’t be wrapped up for at least a few more episodes. And for the record, I do not believe she is an actress or somehow trapped inside the soap opera “Invitation To Love” from the original series. I mean, c’mon, think about it, that makes no sense. She’s an actress in a soap opera playing a character with her own name? A soap opera that references events taking place in her hometown? That’s completely absurd (right??). That theory is...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's great to be in the know. To have a moment (hopefully more than one) when the veil drops and, per that old song, the mysteries of love (of life) come clear. Part 12 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks opens with just such a scene, as FBI Agent Tammy Preston (Chrysta Bell) is initiated into the Blue Rose Task Force by her superiors Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) and Gordon Cole (Lynch). The references Albert drops—to things like "Project Blue Book" and to people like "Chet Desmond"—will be familiar to any Peaks obsessive who has pored over the original series, the Fire Walk with Me movie, or Frost's 2016 tie-in novel The Secret History of Twin Peaks. But remember that...

It took 12 whole episodes, but Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) has finally returned to our television screens.
The Twin Peaks chat rooms, message boards and Twitter feeds have been speculating for years on end about where we would find her and how (Is she in Hollywood? Is she the mysterious billionaire in New York? Is she still in a coma? Was she horribly disfigured in the bank explosion? Is she now running One Eyed Jacks?). But I am fairly certain that no one saw this outcome, this development, this new Audrey.
At first I found it confusing and jarring: that weird guy is Audrey’s husband?...

High schools have seen their share of monsters in the movies, be they werewolves (Teen Wolf, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Ginger Snaps), vampires (Twilight, My Best Friend is a Vampire), aliens (The Faculty), or just your average, garden-shear variety slasher (Prom Night, Scream, etc.). You might think that the 1987 horror film Zombie High attempts to bring the undead to the high school hallway. You would be wrong. For proof, check out Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray of Zombie High, which isn’t really a zombie movie and is barely even a horror film.

December 15th is definitely a great day to be a cult film fan as we’ve got a bunch of stellar titles making their home entertainment bows this week. Scream Factory is releasing several films on Blu this Tuesday—The Car, Zombie High and the double feature of The Dungeonmaster and Eliminators—and Arrow Video is keeping busy as well with their special editions of both Blood Rage and What Have You Done to Solange?

The Car (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
The peaceful tranquility of a small Western town is disturbed when a murderous car wreaks havoc by viciously mowing down innocent victims. The new sheriff, Wade Parent (James Brolin), may be the only one who can stop this menace in its tracks.

Originally consisting of a series of eight short episodes shown exclusively on David Lynch’s website, Rabbits was eventually taken down and not available to watch anywhere until it was recently released on DVD in the Lime Green Set, a collection of Lynch’s films, in a re-edited four-episode version. As I said in the intro for our list of the year’s best films, 2014 has been a fantastic year at the movies. There was a lot to love, and that means there were a lot of films that simply didn’t make the cut on our other “Best of 2014″ lists. The fourteen movies below didn’t get much love during the year and failed to make much of a dent at the box-office, but they’re very much worth seeking out on Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix, iTunes or anywhere else unloved movies go to rest. Adult World An idealistic twenty-something and a bitter, washed-up mentor find each other in director Scott Coffey‘s funny and heartfelt ode to the begrudging acceptance of adulthood’s responsibilities. How many more coming-of-age movies does the world need? At this point, I think we are all aware that growing up is hard to do, and that the period of time following college graduation, when one is hovering on the precipice of leaving reckless youth behind to start real life, is one of the most difficult to navigate. Most recently, Lena Dunham parlayed this familiar concept into an entire television series, Girls, which you may have heard of if you have ever read anything on the Internet. Adult World, a comedy directed by Scott Coffey, is the latest installment in this ever-growing pantheon, telling the story of what happens when aspiring poet Amy Anderson (Emma Roberts) is forced to get a job at a local porn shop after college in order to pay off her student loans.

Adult World shares a lot in common with 2009′s Post Grad, in so much as both films deal with young...

At just 23, Emma Roberts (“It's Kind of a Funny Story,” “The Art of Getting By,” “Celeste and Jesse Forever”) is about the same age her aunt Julia was when she shot to stardom with the iconic hit “Pretty Woman.” But times have changed, and in Emma’s latest rom-com — Scott Coffey’s “Adult World,” which premiered last year at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival — she plays not a hooker with a heart of gold, but a virginal Syracuse graduate. Roberts is Amy, a post-collegiate aspiring poet who lives in snowy upstate New York with her parents; what she lacks in life experience she makes up for in pluck and aspiration. Her inability to be self-sufficient will feel familiar to a lot of 20-somethings, as today’s economy has created a state of delayed adulthood; coming-of-age so rarely happens at 18 anymore. When Amy’s parents pull the financial plug on her dreams...

We've all had those post-collegiate jobs, the ones that keep the bills paid until real work comes along. Whether it's slinging fries, holding down a cubicle in a call center or working a retail counter, it's the kind of experience that in the best of times will build character or at the very least serve up some good anecdotes down the road. And we're sure once Emma Roberts' Amy Anderson moves on from "Adult World," she'll have some stories to tell as well. Directed by Scott Coffey, "Adult World" tells the story of Amy, a recent college grad and aspiring poet, who takes a job at the titular bookstore — which specializes in XXX material — to help pay off her mounting debt. But things change when crosses paths with Rat Billings (John Cusack), an aging punk poet who agrees to mentor Amy, who learns that she might not be the...

Every once in a while a terrific small-budget indie comes along and nobody even blinks. Adult World, directed by Scott Coffey (known mostly as an actor, particularly for his roles in David Lynch movies like Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway) and written by Andy Cochran, could easily get lost in the waves of well-intentioned but ultimately undistinguished little movies that wash up on the VOD shores every week. But it's so smart — and so specific about the way young people's expectations of glory can either funnel more crap into the world or stem that crap's flow — that it deserves to be plucked from the drink.

Everyone wants to be commended for their work. One of the inalienable facets of the American education system, and one that’s stirred up a fair amount of criticism in recent years, is a focus on numbers as an end-all. A high Gpa, strong Act scores and a large amount of course credits are valued above all else in high schools and colleges, to the point where students actively compete to see who can score highest. The C, once meant to imply an average score, is no longer acceptable – only the golden A will do. The system’s critics claim that boiling education down to numbers is really missing the point, and that all the A’s and 36′s can’t help students if reaching those targets prevents them from understanding the purpose behind their education or, worse, deluding themselves into believing that high scores are enough to guarantee career success.

Premiering last spring at the Tribeca Film Festival and then not seen elsewhere for the rest of 2013, we had nearly forgotten about "Adult World." Now, the comedy is very much back on the radar with a brand new trailer ahead of its release next month. Starring Emma Roberts, John Cusack, Evan Peters, Shannon Woodward, Cloris Leachman and John Cullum, the film from director Scott Coffey tells the story of Amy Anderson, a college grad in poetry, convinced she is the next big thing of the literary world. But rejection letters combined with rising financial debt for her to take a job at an adult bookstore, but she may have another chance at fulfilling her dreams when falls under the tutelage of the cranky punk poety Rat Billings. Yes, it's a mix of ingredients that add up to quirky, and while it didn't quite work for us, perhaps it will for you.

Scott Coffey’s Adult World debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and it’s finally on the cusp of its stateside release, heading into cinemas and to VOD on Valentine’s Day next month.
The actor-turned-filmmaker made his feature directorial debut back in 2005 with Ellie Parker, led by Naomi Watts. And he returns with Adult World, his sophomore feature, with the young Emma Roberts front and centre. And with less than a month to go before it arrives, IFC has released the first poster, and launched the first trailer over on Yahoo Movies.

Even though the screenplay for Scot Armstrong.s upcoming film Search Party . originally written by Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller . was on the 2010 Blacklist, it still got a rewrite by first-time director Armstrong himself (whose most recent credits include The Hangover Part II and Road Trip 2: Beer Pong). Nothing would be better than for this film to be the complete opposite of derivative, but that might be asking too much. At least the cast should be able to help. Search Party has added Shannon Woodward as a female lead, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Woodward is probably most famous for her role as Jimmy.s romantic interest on Fox.s Raising Hope, though she was also in the FX series The Riches a few years ago. As far as features go, she.ll next be seen starring with John Cusack and Emma Roberts in Scott Coffey.s Adult World,...

Like most other festivals, the Tribeca Film Festival is filled with films good, bad, and mediocre, but the nadir of my cinematic experiences here so far is certainly Scott Coffey's Adult World, a would-be comedy and self-described "satire" that is as grating and obnoxious as the performance by Emma Roberts at its center. There's hardly an actual human character to be found here; it's practically all broad caricature with people reduced to single character traits. There is exactly one redeeming facet to this film which saves it from being completely unbearable, but I'll elaborate on that later.Adult World introduces us to its heroine Amy (Emma Roberts) in its opening scene - a nod to Harold and Maude - in which, after sighing to her Sylvia...

“Poet” as a career path isn’t exactly the safest or sanest route for the creative youth of America to take, but Amy Anderson (Emma Roberts) doesn’t appear to have taken that sort of thing (i.e. actual reasonable thought) into consideration when it comes to her post-grad life. Back at home with her parents, the guileless Amy wiles away her time penning new poetry, applying for various “accolades” (really, this is how she talks) from different publications and using her parents’ dime to fund the entire endeavor. Sick of putting her up (and putting up with her), Amy’s parents demand she find a job, though they probably weren’t pulling for her eventual hiring at Adult World, the local adult video store. The joke, of course, of Scott Coffey’s Adult World is that Amy is entering the “adult world” for the first time, a realm of maturity that she desperately needs to spend...

Now in its 12th year, the Tribeca Film Festival is one of the premiere artistic showcases and industry marketplaces for independent cinema. Sundance might still be the place to go to discover new talent on the cheap, Toronto is the festival to generate Oscar buzz, but Tribeca has an eclectic mix that both reflects the soul of native New Yorkers and what the city means to the rest of the world as a cultural international capital. In between tonight’s opener — the music documentary Mistaken for Strangers about the National — and the closing night’s special screening of Martin Scorsese...

Scott Coffey has had a 30-year-long career as an actor, appearing in films such as "Mulholland Dr." and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," as well as in his directorial debut "Ellie Parker" in 2005. This year Coffey adds a second film to his directing filmography with "Adult World," starring Emma Roberts as an aspiring poet who takes up a job in a sex shop, and John Cusack, as a punk poet. The film, which was inspired by the satirical tone of Alexander Payne's "Citizen Ruth," comments on the replacement of the American Dream with youth's current struggle for fame. What it's about: Amy Anderson graduates college convinced she's going to be a famous American poet. Unemployed and desperate for work, she takes a job in an adult book and video store.
