Flix Flashback‘Suryavamsam’, ‘Minsara Kanavu’, ‘Bharathi Kannamma’, ‘Kaalemellam Kadhal Vaazhga’ were some of the other successful movies while there were lesser hits such as ‘Iruvar’, ‘Ullasam’, ‘Nerukku Ner’ and ‘Pistha’.Nandhu SundaramYouTube screenshotThere was a time in the pre-Netflix era – and even before multiplexes – when our affair at the movies was a totally different experience. If we rewind to exactly 25 years ago, we are transported to a time when private Tamil television (Sun TV) was only five years old and standalone theatres were still mostly the only place where we courted the stars. As it turns out, 1997 was a distinctive and extraordinary year for Tamil cinema. There was no shortage of critically acclaimed movies or blockbusters. A high was guaranteed practically every time you went to the theatre. Back then, before the age of social media, the movie-watching experience was so pure and so highly anticipated that satisfaction was always on the cards.

Acclaimed art director Samir Chanda is no more. He died yesterday of a heart attack which is said to have occurred due to a medicine gone wrong. Supposedly he was also going through a phase of severe depression due to issues in his personal life. Says a close associate, "Off late Samir wasn't himself. Though he has been a thorough professional right through 25 odd years that he worked as an art director with some of the biggest Bollywood filmmakers, he wasn't at peace with himself during last few months." This was felt by Shirish Kunder and his production team as well during their stint together in Joker. This fantasy flick with an element of sci-fi was one of the select few projects that Chanda had hand picked this year. Since the film allowed him to run his imagination wild and do something totally out of ordinary while creating a new world,...

As far as onscreen villains go, Prashant Narayanan's portrayal of Dheeraj Pandey, a self-turned eunuch and a psychopath serial killer in Murder 2 is by far the most fear-provoking. Prashant switches shades like a chameleon in the film and makes your spine chill when he sings 'Kitna mazaa aaya. Tere tukde karoon chaar' while killing his victims. Prashant started off by assisting Art Director Samir Chanda and worked on films like Govind Nihalani's Rukmavati Ki Haveli, Subhash Ghai's Saudagar and Shyam Benegal's Sardari Begum. He got his first break in Hansal Mehta's Chhal and went on to deliver power packed performances in films like Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, Shadows Of Time, Yeh Saali Zindagi and Bhindi Baazaar Inc. Even though this gifted actor was appreciated for his performances in these films, none of these films were successful at the box office, but Murder 2...

Mumbai, June 7 – The climactic fight between Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in ‘Raavan’ on a wooden bridge actually required three different bridges to be built so that the scene could be captured from different angles, says production designer Samir Chanda. And director Mani Ratnam personally oversaw the construction work.
‘I had to build three bridges – one for the actors’ long shots that was 210 feet long, another for their close-ups at 70 feet and the third was 30 feet long for the actors’s leg work like running and falling,’ Chanda said.
The three bridges were built between two mountains in a road-less.

June 2, 2010: Three different wooden bridges for the same sequence had to be built for the climactic fight between Vikram and Abhishek Bachchan in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. This monument of cinematic architecture between two mountains in a road-less stretch at Malshej Ghat was constructed by the famed production designer Samir Chanda and not by the distinguished bridge-architect Sheshadri Srinivasan, as rumoured.
What we would see as one mammoth wooden bridge in Raavan is actually three bridges constructed by Samir Chandra who reveals, “I had to build three bridges, one for the.
