John Carpenter’s illustrious catalog of horror and non-horror classics has already seen three remakes, with at least one more kinda-sorta confirmed on the way (Escape from New York). If you consider 2011’s The Thing enough of a remake, notch another on the bedpost. It makes sense; Carpenter turned his no-bullshit attitude into a masterful filmmaking style, and those listed titles harbor nostalgic admiration. We’re probably closer than we think to seeing Bryan Fuller’s Christine remake for Blumhouse or a contemporary They Live, while Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble in Little China sequel project fades away. Imagine Julia Ducournau’s Christine should Fuller exit, or what about if James Gunn booked a brief horror vacation away from the Dceu for his take on They Live?
Carpenter’s brand of down-and-dirty storytelling mixed with societal commentaries make his works perfect for generational updates, but they can’t all be winners.

Turning down a job can sometimes come back to haunt you, especially if you're an actor who passed up a role in an acclaimed horror movie and later regretted the decision. This scenario may be difficult to imagine. After all, who would pass up the chance to be in a movie or TV show, right? As fans, though, it can be easy to forget that the movie business -- for all its glory, fanfare, legacy, and importance -- is, at the end of the day, just that: a business. A person in any industry may decline a job that doesn't feel like good fit, doesn't align with their schedule, or maybe would have them working with a filmmaker or co-star they unsure of for one reason or another.

This could not have been more true for one WWE Hall of Famer, Glenn Jacobs, whose character Kane was inspired by Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. Although Jacobs carried the name to fame, it was Jim Cornette who was the mastermind behind the character.

Stephen King's 1977 short story "Children of the Corn" has been adapted to film an embarrassing number of times. The first adaptation was a 1983 short called "Disciples of the Crow," and it was off to the races. The first feature in the franchise, directed by Fritz Kiersch, hit in 1984 and starred Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton as an innocent city couple who make the mistake of driving through Gatlin, Nebraska, a town that's been taken over by its under-16 population. The kids, following the directions of an off-screen demonic entity they call He Who Walks Behind the Rows, have murdered all the adults and set up their own blood cult. The protagonists run afoul of the kiddie cult and barely escape with their lives intact.
"Children of the Corn" was followed by eight sequels, released from 1993 through 2018. Few of them are good, although the monster design for "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest...

With no recent news on that rumoured new Friday The 13th game, what are fans to do? Well, if you’re like indie developer Steve McCall, you make your own. Not only that, but you take your existing game, along with other slasher games that you’ve made, and you demake it into the style of an Nes game.
The story goes that McCall had created four games a few decades ago where you play as one of four iconic slashers: Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Candyman. The four games—Friday The 13th: Return to Camp Blood, Halloween: October 31st, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Son of a Hundred Maniacs, and Candyman: Be My Victim—were developed for what he referred to as “archaic computers”, and feature simplified controls.
Really though, when you’re playing as one of horror’s favourite slashers, do you really need complicated controls?...

Director Nick Castle’s 1984 sci-fi film The Last Starfighter is one of the most revered cult classics of the 1980s, so it has been no surprise to hear that the film’s screenwriter Jonathan R. Betuel is eager to revive the property is some way. Eight years ago, it was announced that Betuel was working on a spin-off TV series called The Starfighter Chronicles, which would focus on alien law enforcement. That project has never made it into production. Five years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta revealed that he was working with Betuel on a reboot called The Last Starfighters. That one even got a sizzle reel, but still didn’t make it into production. Now, during an interview with Gizmodo, actor Wyatt Russell revealed that he’d love to see a remake of The Last Starfighter.

Juno Temple is discussing her connection to one of horror's most iconic locations.
The Ted Lasso alum appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night and opened up about her childhood.
In one of the most surprising interviews in Jimmy Kimmel's history, Temple revealed that she grew up in the original Michael Myers House from the Halloween movie.
"So my parents were living out here, and I was born actually in the U.K., but then I came back here until I was about 5," she dished.
"And I actually grew up in, this is an interesting place to grow up, my parents bought a house without realizing until Halloween came around, and there was a tour bus that it was the original Michael Myers house from the Halloween movie!"
Temple said she didn't really understand the location's past because she was five years old.

Author Mark Allen has released his new Nocturnal novel, Just Before Dawn on Amazon. Press photos from award winning photographer, Fiona Young.
It has been five years since the events of Nocturnal, and life has settled back to normal. The Vampire continues his quiet existence and visits his beloved granddaughter, Lottie. Reggie Downing is now Lead Detective, and Nick Castle is his lieutenant after Morris Horn’s retirement. Reggie is Nick’s most trusted confidant.
But a twisted killer stalks San Diego’s Vampire Goth club scene, leaving kills that mimic vampirism. Desperate to stop this evil, Reggie asks for his ancestor’s help once again. Reluctant to involve himself in “the affairs of man” and yet deeply offended by the killer’s methods, the Vampire uneasily agrees.

In John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween," the masked killer Michael Myers was played by multiple actors. For the bulk of his scenes, Michael — called "The Shape" — was played by Nick Castle, a film school friend of Carpenter's and a director in his own right. Castle also directed "The Last Starfighter" and "The Boy Who Could Fly." As a small boy, Michael Myers was played, in one scene, by an actor named Will Sandin in his first and last role on screen. In Pov shots, the hands of young Michael were provided by co-writer and producer Debra Hill, while the unmasked Michael — who appears only briefly at the very end of the movie — was played by Tony Moran.
Castle had the lion's share of screen time, however, and is generally thought of as the "official" Michael Myers by "Halloween" fans the world over. Castle would reprise the role for David Gordon Green...

John Carpenter's "Halloween" is one of the finest horror films ever made. Rick Rosenthal's "Halloween II" is one or 12 steps down from that.
Carpenter's original is also one of the most successful independent productions of all time. It launched the slasher film craze, made Jamie Lee Curtis a star and, thanks to the white-masked Michael Myers, spawned lifelong nightmares in the subconscious of every kid who begged their parents to let them watch it. Forty-five years on, "Halloween" is still a wildly effective, brilliantly crafted film. It is, per its tagline, "The Night He Came Home." "Halloween II" was unimaginatively sold as "More of the Night He Came Home." It's basically the "More American Graffiti" of horror flicks, and, like that film, it's better than its reputation suggests.
Having established himself as a genre auteur, Carpenter bowed out of directing the sequel and set his sights on "The Fog.

What defines a horror movie slasher killer? Not all of them speak, so we can't talk about voice. Not all of them stick to a single signature weapon, so we have to find another avenue. The easy answer is the mask, but even that changes -- Jason Voorhees wore a bag over his head before he found that hockey mask in his franchise's third film. So maybe it comes down to the walk. Jason is a lumbering beast, stumbling forward and easily distracted, the bull in the china shop. Freddy Krueger is a demonic spider monkey, his elastic limbs flapping to the winds as he pursues his prey.
And Michael Myers, aka the Shape, of "Halloween" fame? He's the shark from "Jaws" in human form: a merciless predator who simply cannot be deterred. He moves like he has a plan, a merciless void powered by an alien intelligence. Jason acts on instinct.

Remakes were all the rage in the 2000s. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, The Crazies, My Bloody Valentine, The Hills Have Eyes – and the list goes on and on. And then there’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A Platinum Dunes creation, the 2003 remake did what most remakes fail to do: honor the original while doing something wildly unique and equally as cool. Director Marcus Nispel, also behind the Friday the 13th remake, carves out a special place in the pantheon of horror by trusting his instincts and letting the cast play (and scream along the way). 20 years later, the bright spot in the sea of mediocre remakes still operates on all cylinders, and in many respects, outpaces the 1974 original.

After John Carpenter made "Halloween" in 1978, the director wasn't terribly interested in making a sequel. When it came time to write the screenplay for "Halloween II," however, a reluctant Carpenter sat in front of his typewriter, hammered on beers, kind of at a loss as to where this story was going to go. It was only by mere creative desperation that Carpenter conceived of the notion that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was secretly Michael Myers' sister.
In the first "Halloween," Michael Myers was played by various actors, although mostly by Nick Castle, an old friend of Carpenter's and a film director in his own right. In "Halloween II," Michael was played by a stuntman named Dick Warlock, an experienced performer who appeared in films like "The Love Bug" (he drove Herbie), "Blazing Saddles," and Carpenter's "Escape from New York."

One of the most prolific icons in horror, John Carpenter, has returned with the new television series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams. His new show blurs the line between narrative and documentary as the anthology show interviews the subjects of its terrifying stories. Although the review by our own Alex Maidy states that the series barely exceeds that of a Dateline or Unsolved Mysteries dramatization show, it has the distinction of being directed by Carpenter himself. When it comes to returning to feature films, the horror maestro spoke with the L.A. Times and considered directing again for the right project.
According to ComingSoon.net, Carpenter is open to doing a movie, but the freedom and purity of making music is too seductive. ”Get the right one or the right budget — yeah, I’ll do it. I don’t want to work that much, though. Compared to music, it’s so...

It has been 45 years since the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween. And while there are so many unique approaches to celebrating the occasion – killing your babysitter, purchasing Laurie Strode’s house, etc. – there is now yet another way. Debuting at the H45: 45 Years of Terror convention, new prints that bring Michael Myers to Riverdale (or is it Archie to Haddonfield?) is the crossover you had no idea had been inked into existence.

Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story star David Harbour considers his new film to be a real-life The Last Starfighter.
In Nick Castle’s 1984 film that Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen have both tried to remake, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is an aimless teenager who perfects an arcade game called Starfighter and ends up being recruited by the game’s alien inventor to help fight in an interstellar war. Well, Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo tells the true story of how Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) mastered the Gran Turismo video game en route to being recruited by Nissan and becoming a professional racing driver.
Harbour’s character, Jack Salter, who’s a former driver turned mechanic, is the one tasked with actually turning Jann into a proper race car driver, and the role has shades of Robert Duvall in Days of Thunder (1990), John Candy in Cool Runnings (1993) and Emilio Estevez...

John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.

When it comes to horror franchises the Halloween series is a bit like Chewbacca; it doesn’t make a lot of sense narratively unless you really understand what is going on. That’s right, you just heard a Star Wars reference in a video about a Halloween movie. Just roll with it… Technically the Halloween films are four different stories and one one-off tale told over the course of thirteen films, if my math is right away. Only one of these narrative shifts seems to have been done for creative reasons while the rest were undertaken in an effort to continue the series and make more money from the Halloween brand. Of all of Hollywood’s attempts to cash in on the video game craze of the 1980s, The Last Starfighter trails only Tron as the decade’s most fondly nostalgized entry in the video game movie’s micro boom. Like Tron, Nick Castle’s film is a demonstration of then-new CGI technology, which means that inevitably its heavy reliance on wireframe animations and blocky, thickly pixelated objects has very much aged, though the fact that its visual effects are tethered to the game technology of the day further highlights it as a relic of its era. Perhaps the one area in which it’s ahead of its time is in its conceit of an arcade game being used as a military recruiting tool.
At the center of The Last Starfighter is a teenager named Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), who lives in a trailer park at the dusty outskirts of his hometown.

In last year’s Scream movie, which came to us from the filmmaking trio known as Radio Silence, there’s a moment where the characters realize the latest iteration of the Ghostface killer is “making a requel”. It breaks down like this: “You can’t just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore, but you can’t just do a straight sequel either. You’ve got to build something new. It’s got to be part of an on-going storyline. New main characters, yes, but supported by and related to legacy characters. Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel.” Some prefer to term “legacyquel” over “requel”, but in a new interview with ComicBook.com Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed they’re planning to make an Escape from New York “requel”.
It was announced back in November that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are attached to direct a new take on John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi...

Barbara Bosson, a staple of primetime television dramas for decades (including many created or produced by her former husband Steven Bochco), has died at the age of 83. Her son Jesse Bochco announced the news via his Instagram.
“More spirit and zest than you could shake a stick at. When she loved you, you felt it without a doubt. If she didn’t, you may well have also known that too,” Bochco wrote. “Forever in our hearts. I love you Mama.”

Snake Plissken doesn't give a damn.
When audiences see a bitter or misanthropic character in a movie, optimism likely leads them to search for the disappointed idealist underneath. One example: Rick (Humphrey Bogart) from "Casablanca." Rick is bitter and cynical about the world and doesn't care when scoundrels are taken away by the Nazis in Morocco. When Rick is asked about his nationality, he declares himself to be a drunkard. Audiences, however, will eventually learn that Rick lost his idealism years earlier when an affair with his ex-lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) was cut off abruptly. Rick will eventually find a new lease on life by helping Ilsa out of the country, grateful for the time they spent together. "We'll always have Paris," he says wistfully.
Imagine an ending where Rick did not help Ilsa, and she was apprehended by the Nazis while Rick stood idly by, indifferent to her fate.

Yesterday, January 16th, was the 75th birthday of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, and a lot of fans made sure to watch some of Carpenter’s movies to celebrate. During the festivities, I also happened to stumble across video of an old interview with Carpenter, one that was conducted on the set of the 1978 classic Halloween (watch that Here) to be aired as an episode of Arena Cinema that was broadcast on BBC2 in early ’79. Coinciding with the British release of Halloween. This interview can be viewed in the embed at the bottom of this article.

Jean Veloz, the innovative Lindy Hop dancer who dazzled in Swing Fever and other Hollywood musicals of the 1940s, has died. She was 98.
Veloz died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, her friend, agent and manager Rusty Frank told The Hollywood Reporter. Frank co-produced the 2010 event A Tribute to the Groovie Movie, which celebrated Veloz and her contribution to dance.
“Jean innovated a style of swing dance that was admired around the world,” Frank said. “It was silky smooth and greatly contrasted the more jitterbug style prevalent during the 1930s-’40s.”
Generations of dancers idolized her.
In MGM’s Swing Fever (1943), Veloz whirled with servicemen portrayed by Lennie Smith and Don Gallagher in the high-octane number “One Girl and Two Boys,” accompanied by Kay Kyser’s band and sandwiched between Marilyn Maxwell’s singing.

A lot of moments that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut of director David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends were used to promote the film, with one of the most prominent examples being images that showed an extended version of the attack on the character Joan, Corey’s mom, who was played by Joanne Baron. Now that Halloween Ends is available on both digital and physical media, we decided to share the extended scene clip that shows the full attack on Joan.
At least this scene made it into the special features. The extended cut of the death of Susan the radio receptionist is nowhere to be found.
Green, who was also at the helm of Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills, directed Halloween Ends from a screenplay he wrote with Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier. The film has the following synopsis:

James Winburn, the stuntman who performed scenes as Michael Myers in the 1978 movie Halloween, has died aged 85.
Winburn’s manager confirmed he died in hospital in LA on 19 November following an undisclosed illness.
One of the most notable scenes the stuntman performed in the movie saw Donald Pleasence’s Dr Samuel Loomis shoot Myers six times, causing him to fall off a balcony to his (seeming) death.
Winburn stepped in to film sequences in place of Nick Castle and Tony Moran, who both played Myers in the film.
He later returned as the iconic masked villain, also known as The Shape, alongside Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis in 1981’s Halloween II.
Winburn had attended the For the Love of Horror convention the month before he died. “We are extremely sad to learn of the passing of James Winburn,” UK-based Monopoly Events wrote on Twitter after news of Winburn’s death went public.

One of the first to play one of the big screen’s biggest horror icons, James Winburn donned the Michael Myers mask in John Carpenter’s original Halloween back in 1978, and we’ve learned the sad news this week that the legendary stuntman has passed away at the age of 85.
Winburn passed away on November 19 following an undisclosed illness, EW reports.
A few people, including Nick Castle, played Michael Myers in the original Halloween, with James Winburn performing the memorable balcony stunt in the horror classic’s climax.
“I put on the Michael Myers mask a number of times,” Winburn said during a Halloween Q&a session years back, noting that he filled in whenever John Carpenter needed Michael Myers to do things Nick Castle, Tony Moran and various others could not. Winburn added during that same convention interview, “I doubled [for] whatever John wanted me to do.”

Filmmaking team Radio Silence — a trio made up of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella — is set to direct 20th Century’s reboot of John Carpenter’s cult classic “Escape From New York,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The studio won a bidding war for rights to the reboot in early 2015, with Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company set to produce.
Neal Cross, creator of the BBC crime series “Luther,” wrote the previous drafts of the script. The search for a new writer is underway.
Kurt Russell starred as the iconic one-eyed anti-hero Snake Plissken in the original dystopian action film, released by Avco Embassy in 1981. Studiocanal owned the rights to the film, which had several suitors, and was won by Fox on the back of the studio’s competitive bid.

With the release of Halloween Ends (read our review Here) in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service, Halloween fans have been delivered another divisive entry in the franchise. Some love it, some hate it. Some have even put together a petition demanding the movie be reshot entirely. No matter which way we feel about it, now we know for sure why John Carpenter described it as “a departure from the others” and why original Michael Myers performer Nick Castle said it was going to be “surprising”. Director David Gordon Green and star Jamie Lee Curtis knew all along that Halloween Ends wasn’t going to go over well with some fans – and they even warned cast member Rohan Campbell about that when he was cast a few years ago.

It's up for debate whether or not "Halloween Ends" is going to be the actual end of the "Halloween" franchise. The more recent installments have seen wildly mixed reviews, with passionate stances coming from both sides of the aisle — but if there's one thing "Halloween" fans can agree on, it's their desire for more Michael Myers. That said, it appears that Jame Lee Curtis, our longtime heroine Laurie Strode, isn't the only pivotal cast member who claims she is saying goodbye to the story for good.
Myers actor James Jude Courtney confirmed that "Halloween Ends" would be his last time donning the mask during an interview with ScreenRant published on October 18, 2022. He said:
"You know, [director] David [Gordon Green], and Jamie and I have talked about this, we're done. We're done. I think, for me, to put this character down, Jamie and I were talking on the set towards the end,...

It's a well known fact that the original "Halloween," refers to Michael Myers as "The Shape" in the movie's end credits. It's a fitting description for the character who never utters a single word throughout the entire film. Instead, he lurks in the shadows, kitchen knife in hand, waiting for the right moment to strike. He is less a man and more, quite simply, the embodiment — the shape — of evil itself.
Over the years, many actors (the number varies depending on how technical you want to get here) have donned Michael's iconic mechanic's jumpsuit and repurposed William Shatner mask, making the moniker of "The Shape" a fitting name. But even though Michael's portrayers truly have shape-shifted a lot over time, there is one man whose name is synonymous with the infamous slasher villain: Nick Castle.

To begin with something benign: David Gordon Green's "Halloween Ends," now in theaters and streaming on Peacock, employed an unusual font for its opening titles. As has been discussed in the pages of /Film recently, both John Carpenter's 1978 original and Green's 2018 sequel employed an orange Itc Serif Gothic Heavy font. Both Rick Rosenthal's 1981 sequel "Halloween II," and Green's follow-up "Halloween Kills" uses the same orange on a Standard Ct Ext ExtraBold font. Finally, both Tommy Lee Wallace's 1982 film "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" and Green's "Halloween Ends" feature a more simplified font that looks like Helvetica.
Why is this important? Green clearly had an eye on the entire rocky history of the "Halloween" film series, now on its thirteenth entry. While Green's films follow a particular continuity that ignores all the other films in the franchise with the exception of the first, in very subtle ways,...

Billed as the final film in David Gordon Green‘s sequel trilogy, Halloween Ends surely won’t be the last movie in the franchise but it’s likely to be the final time Jamie Lee Curtis returns to do battle with Michael Myers. Not surprisingly, it’s a promise that put asses in the seats over the weekend, with Halloween Ends scaring up 58.4 million worldwide thus far.
Domestically, Halloween Ends made 41.2 million in its opening weekend across 3,901 theaters. That puts Halloween Ends in the #1 spot on the domestic charts this week, and the film is likely to rocket past 100 million worldwide in these next two weeks before Halloween.
For the sake of comparison, Halloween had a domestic opening of 76 million back in 2018, while Halloween Kills opened to 49 million here in the United States just last year.

Halloween Ends is finally here. The battle between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers is ready to give you a trick and a treat. David Gordon Green’s final entry in his Haddonfield trilogy is, at least for this viewer, ambitious, wild, and an unexpected way to close out Laurie’s adventure. Returning for one last scare, Jamie Lee Curtis is back, along with Kyle Richards, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Nick Castle, and Rohan Campbell, who joins the cast for the first time. It’s Halloween, and Michael has returned home.

Evil streams tonight. That's right, you won't have to wait much longer to see the epic conclusion of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode's multi-generational feud. That's because "Halloween Ends" is now streaming earlier than expected on Peacock. How exciting!
It being on Peacock the same day as its theatrical release isn't exactly an unexpected surprise. It was announced back in August that "Ends" will follow a similar day-and-date release as last year's "Halloween Kills." However, it being released a few hours earlier is pretty awesome.
David Gordon Green's horror trilogy has received some pretty mixed reception over its duration.
