- Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
- As of 2023, Burton, sound mixer Russell Williams II, actors Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, and costume designer Ruth E. Carter are the only African-Americans that have won two Oscars.
- In 2007, Burton received his seventh Oscar nomination for Dreamgirls (2006), which at the time tied composer/producer Quincy Jones for the most Academy Award nominations by an African-American. The record was broken by Denzel Washington, who received his 7th and 8th nominations in 2017 for Fences (2016) and received his 9th nomination for Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) the following year.
