One night in Bangkok the wheels of vengeance are propelled into motion when Billy (Tom Burke) rapes and brutally murders a 16-year-old prostitute. Billy is caught red-handed by the police; but opting to forgo the criminal justice system, the police enlist a retired police investigator -- Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm) -- to serve as Billy's judge, jury and executioner. The police obviously comprehend the power and influence of Billy's family; arresting Billy would surely just ensure his eventual release and freedom. So, Chang brings the young victim's father to the scene of the heinous crime, leaving him alone with the man who raped and slaughtered his daughter. The girl's father is probably just as guilty of the girl's murder as Billy, as he pimps out his daughters in order to support his family. The opportunity to avenge the murder of his daughter might alleviate some of the burden on his conscience,...

Wisconsin Democrats won President Obama's attention and inspired other states by bolting the capital to protest a crackdown on unions. David Graham on the history of the political walkout.
You can't win a vote when you've got fewer votes than your opponents. But Wisconsin Democrats are discovering a centuries-old corollary truth this week: you can't lose a vote if you don't let it happen. And that's why 14 of them have fled out of Madison and across the border into Illinois, hoping to prevent a vote that would cut benefits for public-sector workers and curtail the right to collective bargaining.

There aren't enough Democrats to block the plan in the state Senate, but without their presence at the capitol, there isn't a quorum in the body, and without a quorum the Republican minority can't vote on the bill. It's a desperate tactic,...

"Chinatown has swept me off my feet in a trance of admiration" – Rex Reed, New York Daily News. "Forget Hitchcock. We've got Polanski!" Tom Burke, Rolling Stone.
The accolades from America are deafening, the box-office returns impeccable. Roman Polanski's Chinatown is indeed a palpable hit – the first this highly talented, unpredictable director has had since Rosemary's Baby, which seems an age ago. He calls it, "a traditional detective story with a new, modern shape". And if by that he means an old cinematic genre decked in convincing new clothes, one can't quarrel.
But Chinatown is rather more than just a skilful version of The Maltese Falcon, with Jack Nicholson updating the Bogart part and Faye Dunaway as a makeweight Bacall. In fact it is not really a homage at all, or another runner in the nostalgia stakes. It is too clever for that. It is...

0424 Look, Stranger (Arielle Javitch, USA/Serbia/Slovenia)
Audacity isn’t a term that comes to mind when thinking of contemporary American independent film, a culture that often seems adverse to the kind of maverick, idiosyncratic risk-taking cinema that made its name in the 1980s. As such, plunges into the abyss are well worth noting. For her feature film debut, American filmmaker Arielle Javitch has gone to Serbia to make a movie in English with a handful of lines of dialog, no clear setting, and very few plot points. Serbia is where it is shot but it takes place nowhere, a sketch of evacuated urban outskirts and craggy landscapes punctuated by mine fields, random roadblocks, and sniper traps. No war seems to be going on, but the film evokes a place somewhere between the ashen pastoral and the war torn—for me it immediately called to mind Tarkovsky’s movie Stalker...
