On the heels of Billy Baker’s sentimental “return” and a nostalgia-fueled 100th episode, All American had fans reaching for the tissues once again on Monday with its tribute to the late Kamar de los Reyes.
De los Reyes — best known for playing cop Antonio Vega on ABC’s One Life to Live — passed away last December after a brief battle with cancer. He was able to appear as Coach Montes in All American‘s Season 6 premiere in April, but since de los Reyes’ passing, his character has been kept offscreen without explanation.

All American celebrated its 100-episode milestone on Monday the same way it celebrates most special occasions: with a little nostalgia, and a lot of great football.
The momentous hour — titled “100%” and directed by series star Daniel Ezra — found Spencer trying to make sense of recurring dreams he’d been having, in which his fallen Crenshaw friend Shawn Scott appeared to him on the field where Spencer once played Pee-Wee football as a kid. In order to sort out the dreams’ meaning, Spencer took the day before the looming NCAA championship game to revisit all the football fields he’d ever...

Taye Diggs is returning to All American but this has many fans confused. Diggs played Billy Baker on the show, and while his return is nice, the fact remains that Billy died on the show. With his death, many fans wonder how his return will occur. More so, what does it mean for the remainder of the season?
Here is a look at Taye Diggs’s return to All American and what it could mean.
Taye Diggs’ Billy Baker Coming Back To All American
Taye Diggs was one of the top stars of All American. However, when his time on the show came to an end, it was done in a way to ensure he couldn’t return. This is because Billy Baker died in the series. Billy, a father and football coach, died when he was saving his players after a bus accident in Season 5, Episode 11 (“Time”).

Taye Diggs is returning to All American as Billy Baker! The thing is, though… Billy Baker died. Here’s all there is to know about this mysterious return to The CW sports series. Diggs will return as Billy for a guest-star appearance in All American Season 6, which is currently airing on Mondays on The CW following its May 6 premiere, according to Deadline. Diggs will appear in the episode that airs on Monday, May 20, and the appearance perhaps makes more sense when you realize that this will be the week before All American‘s 100th episode (airing May 27). The father and football coach was last seen in All American Season 5 Episode 11, “Time,” when he died saving his players after their bus got in an accident. While plot details about Diggs’ return are being kept under wraps for now, it will presumably be in some kind of flashback scene (or scenes!). Bringing...

Taye Diggs will guest star in the May 20 of the CW’s “All American,” on which he played Billy Baker until the character died in Season 5. It it not yet known how exactly Billy will be incorporated into the episode, which will mark the eighth of the season.

Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

[This story contains spoilers from the season six premiere of All American, “Things Done Changed.”]
After nearly a yearlong gap since its season five finale, All American made its season six premiere on The CW on Monday night.
The sports drama that is centered around football player Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) — which has followed the star wide receiver and his friends from his days at Crenshaw High up through his freshman year at the fictitious Golden Angeles University last season — will mark 100 episodes on May 27. It’s a milestone Ezra says came as a shock to him, like many others in the series.
“When I was cast, that was a surprise. When the pilot got picked up, that was a surprise. I didn’t expect any of it,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It took me two seasons to give up my apartment in London. I just thought, ‘They’re going to send me back.’”

What a difference a year makes.
When All American Season 6 Episode 1 began, there had been a major time jump of a year and three months. That's only a few more months in real-time and made sense for most storylines, but there were a few moments that would have been beneficial to see.
Almost all of the vortex members have matured and moved on, so the time jump helped them.
Let's start with Spencer. The football ban allowed him to appreciate the fun of the game, and now that Gau is eligible for the championships again and he's eligible for the NFL draft, he was feeling the weight of the team on his shoulders.
Spencer has always hated media attention, so he hated having reporters, the Gau president, the Boosters, and Coach Kenny harping on how important this season was to them.
Look, Spence, contrary to what the media and the Boosters are saying,...

“Welcome home.”
Those were the two words that All American star Bre-z used to describe the CW series’ upcoming sixth season. New episodes are right around the corner, with the Season 6 premiere set for April 1, and audiences will pick up with the characters more than a year after they last saw them.
Season 5 ended on a bit of tumultuous note for many of the characters. Spencer (Daniel Ezra) and Olivia (Samantha Logan) were finally able to reconnect just as Liv was leaving to spend what everyone thought would be three months in London for an internship. Turns out, it was a bit longer than that.
Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) proposed to Layla (Greta Onieogou). Asher (Cody Christian) began preparing to have a baby. Patience (Chelsea Tavares) was stabbed outside the Baker home, unaware that Coop (Bre-z) was on her way there to confess she still had feelings she wanted to explore.

"All American" fans everywhere were shocked when the hit CW series officially retired Taye Diggs's Billy Baker in February. In a shocking turn of events during a Feb. 13 episode, the actor's character was killed off, ending his impressive five-season run.
At the time, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll addressed Diggs's departure in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, "It has been an honor to work with Taye over these last five seasons and to watch him bring such incredible life to the role of Billy Baker. It has truly been a gift for me and my fellow writers to write a character that was equally flawed and heroic. Billy was all of us and what a joy it was to watch this character grow as he raised his kids and his football players as one big family."
Carroll added, "We wish Taye the very best in this next chapter...

Billy Baker is no more. For anyone who hasn’t been following the fifth season closely, Taye Diggs’ character on All American is no more. The popular CW show is a sports drama created by April Blair that premiered back in 2018. The former NFL player had his own personal issues, most notably being unable to let go of his glory and reconcile with his past. Though Baker was far from a perfect human being, he was...

Billy Baker’s loved ones had just begun to pick up the pieces from his devastating death… and now, tragedy has struck All American once more.
The CW drama has a habit of ending its seasons with a life-or-death cliffhanger (see: Coop getting shot in Season 3), and Patience was the victim in question during Monday’s Season 5 ender. After having zero contact with stalker fan Miko for most of the hour, Patience opened the front door of the Baker house in the episode’s final minutes, only to be stabbed (!!) by an approaching Miko seconds later.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from this week’s episode of All American.
How do people, even members of the same family, deal with their grief differently? That’s the question that The CW‘s All American is seeking to tackle in the episodes following the death of Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs).
After spotlighting Billy’s wife Laura (Monet Mazur) and his daughter Olivia (Samantha Logan), Monday night’s episode hones in on how his son Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) is handling the loss of his father — the man he looked up to most.
“You’re gonna see him struggle with certain things that Billy left behind that maybe Billy wasn’t able to finish…and he will continue to be there for others who are still hurting,” Behling told Deadline, adding: “You’re gonna see that throughout the rest of the season.”

Daniel Ezra says Monday’s episode of The CW’s “All American” should have come with a “warning” for fans, as viewers saw characters continue to grieve the loss of Coach Billy Baker as well as witnessed Spencer make a shocking decision.
While portraying Spencer onscreen, Ezra was also working behind the camera as director for episode 13. This was Ezra’s second go at directing, with his directorial debut being Season 4’s twelfth episode. The actor says he felt “more confident this time around.”
“It’s a whole other kind of pressure,” Ezra told TheWrap ahead of the episode’s premiere. “I prepped any time I wasn’t acting in the coming weeks before I was directing — whether that be scripts, my knowledge of camera shots, angles and sizes. I went overboard on prep, so when it came to quote-unquote ‘game day,’ I was ready for anything.”

Billy Baker is dead.
So what will this mean for All American going forward?
One of the primary pieces of the CW series was taken off the board when Billy was killed attempting to save one of his players from a bus teetering on a cliff-side on All American Season 5 Episode 11.
It was exactly how one would expect Billy to go out: Doing something heroic for another person.
If you watch All American online, you know that as hard as he tried not to be at times, Billy was the series' social conscience.
Billy used football to escape Crenshaw. Then he paid it forward, bringing Spencer, son of his longtime friend Grace, out of Crenshaw to Beverly Hills. Granted, that made his football team stronger. But it's the thought that counts.
Then Billy returned triumphantly to his alma mater, South Crenshaw High, at Spencer's urging, serving first as football coach,...

Billy Baker may be gone, but his impact will linger in Beverly Hills and especially South Crenshaw.
Billy may be resting in peace now, but as All American Season 5 Episode 12 showed, everyone else was coping with their grief in their ways.
And, not surprisingly, the one who was having the most trouble dealing was Laura.
That's understandable. Things had been going great for her and Billy. And his death was so unexpected and just so Billy.
The community's coach went back on a bus teetering on the edge of a cliff because he was convinced that Jabari was still on it.
Jabari's alive, and Billy's dead. That's a lot of guilt to heap on a young man just about to graduate from high school, largely thanks to Billy's guidance.
Laura blowing up just because Jabari showed up to pay his respects at the repast certainly didn't help matters on that front.

Laura blowing up just because Jabari showed up to pay his respects at the repast certainly didn't help matters on that front.

“All American” star Monét Mazur says Taye Diggs’ departure as Coach Billy Baker won’t take away from the series, highlighting that Laura’s journey through grief will showcase a new side of the character.
The CW hit series aired what may have been its most astonishing storyline yet with Billy’s surprise death during the Feb. 13 episode. Mazur said it was “surreal” to learn Diggs’ character would be written off the show, and that she had no idea how the storyline didn’t leak.
“I didn’t really believe (Diggs), and then when (‘All American’ showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll) told all of us I was like, ‘Oh, wow, this is really happening,” the actress told TheWrap.

Even though Taye Diggs’ character Coach Billy Baker died in the latest episode of CW series “All American,” creator, executive producer and showrunner, Nkechi Okoro Carroll says the actor could reprise his role in some form in the future.
At the end of Season 4, Carroll and Diggs mutually decided what Billy’s fate would be. “I have ongoing conversations with all of my cast every season, so there’s nothing that ever comes out of the blue,” said Carroll, who added that she knew she wouldn’t be able to hold onto Diggs for several more seasons. They both agreed that the character and Diggs’ time on the show was fulfilled.
“We never had any delusions that we’d be able to hold onto Taye for 12 seasons or anything like that,” Carroll told TheWrap. “I was just like, ‘Whenever the time comes where it feels like the character has served his purpose,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for All American Season 5 Episode 11, “Time”] The February 13 episode of All American featured a heartbreaking and shocking end. Taye Diggs‘ Billy Baker died at the end of the episode, marking the actor’s exit from The CW series. In the episode, Coach Billy was commuting back home with his team when their bus blew a tire. The accident led to the bus careening to the edge of a cliff, but he and the players escaped the vehicle safely. At least, that’s what Billy thought. He went back onto the bus to look for Jamari (Simeon Daise), and then viewers learned of his death at the same time as his family later in the episode. It was a heroic end for an honorable character. But why did Diggs want to leave the series? Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll said it was a strictly narrative decision. “I had a pretty good idea at...

What just happened?
A key figure got killed off on All American Season 5 Episode 11.
Taye Diggs felt the time was right to leave the series, and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll found a shocking way to accomplish that.
Billy Baker has been one of the central figures of the series, who set Spencer, the other pillar of the show, on his way to becoming, yes, that's right, an All-American.
Since Billy first coaxed Spencer to transfer to Beverly High in the program's first episode, the pair have been intrinsically linked.
Billy made Spencer, the son of Billy's old girlfriend Grace, into an unofficial member of the Baker family, moving Spencer right into their house.
Then Spencer returned the favor by moving back to South Crenshaw and convincing Billy to return to the site of his greatest triumphs, this time as football coach.
The cycle seemed destined to continue this season when...
