After kicking off February with discussions of Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen) and the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), we’re delving into the twisted mind of Pedro Almodóvar with his 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In.
In The Skin I Live In, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has tried to develop a new super skin ever since his beloved wife was horribly burned in a car accident 12 years prior. Finally, Ledgard has created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), a woman he keeps prisoner against her will in the basement of his Spanish mansion.
Being an Almodóvar film, there’s much more to this twisted plot than meets they eye.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.
“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.
As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.
“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.
That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
“There is a virtuous circle that began in 2018 and has been continuously regenerating. Spain’s talent base already interests international audiences,” says María Valenzuela, Movistar Plus Intl.’s general manager.
But the country’s TV production scene is still cycling through the fruits of the boom: the number of...

Whether it’s using her lasso to get the truth out of her enemies or her gauntlets capable of trapping energy and using it to her advantage, Wonder Woman has some pretty cool abilities. And that’s not even getting into her crazy speed and jumping ability. While we may not have gotten her invisible jet, the other staples of Wonder Woman are all there, so join us on today’s DC Revisited as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
While we may have finally received a Wonder Woman via Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman, the project had actually been in development for quite some time. Comedy director Ivan Reitman was even attached to the film as a producer in 1996. Then in ’99, Jon Cohen was tapped by now-producer Joel Silver to write a Wonder Woman script. He was even eyeing Sandra Bullock to star in the title role.

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.
Including the opening and closing series, Amazon’s “Greek Salad” and Netflix’s “Transatlantic,” nearly all the global streamers have titles in the lineup, from Apple TV+’s “Drops of God” and Paramount+’s “Fleeting Lies.” The lineup also features some A-List international writing talents, such as the U.K.’s Jack Thorne and Israel’s Ron Leshem and Amit Cohen, whose “The Virtues” and “No Man’s Land” rank among the most memorable of recent Series Mania competition titles, and closing the festival, out of competition, “Unorthodox’s” Anna Wenger.”Fleeting Lies” also represents one of the first series from Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo label in Madrid,...

In the year of our Lord Cate Blanchett, running a successful Oscar campaign is akin to running a marathon on a tightrope. The first stride is pivotal: An anticipated title must be properly teased, and “surprise” breakouts still require the right awards context if critics and tastemakers are to anoint a new contender. Next steps come in a flurry: The reaction roundups, review roundups, and reactions to the reaction and review roundups all swirl together to shape the would-be-nominee’s initial “buzz.”
Right now, this is where Brendan Fraser finds himself — in the midst of an Oscar push for his heavily touted “comeback” turn in “The Whale,” a Darren Aronofsky film starring everyone’s favorite “Mummy” lead as a reclusive English teacher living with severe obesity. First looks stirred considerable interest. Early buzz out of Venice is strong. And while the film has seen a steady stream of negative notices,...

After “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen will return to the French capital for his 50th movie which he’s described as a “poisonous romantic thriller” with a pair of French stars, Valerie Lemercier (“Aline”) and Niels Schneider (“Love Affair(s))”.
The untitled film, the plot of which is being kept under wraps, will start filming next month and will be entirely in French with a budget in the 10-million range. Allen has described the film to be similar to “Match Point,” in that it would be “exciting, dramatic and also very sinister.”
Allen sparked headlines earlier this week after Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia ran a story reporting that the New York-based filmmaker had told them he was planning on retiring. Allen’s representative then issued a statement saying that the director had “no intention of retiring.”

Woody Allen is shutting down claims from the weekend that he is retiring after his 50th film, “Wasp 22.” The news came out of an interview with the Oscar winner in Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia that he’d be stepping down from filmmaking after his final project, set to shoot in Paris.
Allen’s press representative issued a statement to IndieWire, saying, “Woody Allen never said he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel. He said he was thinking about not making films, as making films that go straight or very quickly to streaming platforms is not so enjoyable for him, as he is a great lover of the cinema experience. Currently, he has no intention of retiring and is very excited to be in Paris shooting his new movie, which will be the 50th.”

Woody Allen says he’s no longer much interested in making movies in the streaming era.
“I will probably make one more movie, but a lot of the thrill is gone because it doesn’t have the whole cinema effect. When I started, you would do a film and it would go to movie houses all over the country and people would come,” the filmmaker told Alec Baldwin during an appearance on Instagram Live on Tuesday to tout his latest collection of humor stories, Zero Gravity.
“Now you do a movie and you get a couple of weeks in a movie house, maybe six weeks or four weeks and then it goes right to streaming or to pay per view. People love sitting at home and watching on their big screens and watching it on their television sets and they have good sound and a clear picture.

The CW has expanded its slate of scripted acquisitions, picking up one-hour Canadian drama series “Family Law.” Entertainment One (eOne) previously secured international distribution rights for the series, which stars Jewel Staite, Victor Garber, Zach Smadu and Genelle Williams. Dan Loewy, eOne’s executive vice president of sales, brokered the deal.
“Family Law,” produced by Seven24 Films and Lark Productions for Corus Entertainment’s Global, follows lawyer and recovering alcoholic Abigail Bianchi (Staite) as she attempts to put both her personal and professional life back together. As part of her probation, she is forced to work alongside her estranged father Harry (Garber), practicing family law for the first time. Additionally, she must create new relationships with her half-brother Daniel (Smadu) and half-sister Lucy (Williams), whom she’s never met.
“The result is a dysfunctional family law firm operating to help other families with their own dysfunction,” the logline reads.

Chicago – When an interview opportunity comes up with Wallace Shawn, and it lasts more than 15 minutes, a conversation can be born. In our own version of “My Dinner with Andre,” I got an expansion with the actor, writer and one of the most famous dinner guests in cinema history (he is the “My” in “My Dinner … “ ).
Wallace Shawn’s story begins in New York City, where he was born the son of journalist Cecille Lyon and William Shawn, the longtime editor of the New Yorker magazine. After doing his undergrad at Harvard and post-grad work at Oxford, he eschew his philosophy and political studies to translate a play for a friend. He also had a role in the play, and his future was determined.

Chicago – Elena Anaya has had an adventure in her career of over 50 films … from the role of Dracula’s Bride in “Van Helsing” to notable work with director Pedro Almodóvar in “The Skin I Live In,” and up to her current role as Dr. Jo Rojas in “Rifkin’s Festival,” she has embraced the journey with a grateful enthusiasm.
“Rifkin’s Festival” – written and directed by Woody Allen – features Wallace Shawn as Mort Rifkin, a struggling novelist who used to be a film studies professor. Through his academia he met and married Sue (Gina Gershon), a movie publicist who saw potential in his literary pursuit. But the ex-professor doesn’t like modern cinema, and distracts himself at a film festival he’s attending with his wife by pursuing a local cardiologist, portrayed by Elena Anaya, and creating dreams and fantasies from his film heroes.

Entering the “likely a money-laundering scheme for Spanish businessmen” part of his European travelogue era, Woody Allen turns uniquely narrow-minded and bitter with Rifkin’s Festival, which takes aim at the film culture that’s both alienated and abandoned him this past decade. Exciting though it is to see the proverbial gloves come off, the hands, sadly, don’t get very dirty.
Beginning on the therapist couch, film critic, professor, and failed novelist Mort Rifkin recounts the story of how he accompanied his wife Sue (Gina Gershon) to the prestigious San Sebastián International Film Festival, where she was handling publicity for Philippe (Louis Garrel), a socially conscious, classic-American-cinema-loving filmmaker diametrically opposed to Mort’s own cinephilic principles. It’s hard to pinpoint what straw man Allen’s exactly going after here—perhaps Phillippe is just a stand-in for all the millennial A24 directors who’ve pissed him off in recent years—but regardless,...

Seeing a Woody Allen movie in 2022 is, it seems fair to say, a curious experience. Those who believe you can’t separate the art from the artist will find copious proof in his latest movie, “Rifkin’s Festival.” But, of course, they’re unlikely to watch it. Those who still celebrate the artist might watch it, but they won’t find much in the way of art.
For his 49th feature film, Allen returns to a well that is not so much dry as desiccated. The movie opens with Wallace Shawn as our Allen doppelgänger, Mort Rifkin. Mort, an anxious former professor, is also a dedicated cinephile and self-defined intellectual who spends the next hour-and-a-half complaining vociferously to his analyst.
He’s reminiscing about a troubled trip to Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival, which he recently took with his publicist wife, Sue (Gina Gershon). “Film festivals are no longer what they were,...

Woody Allen’s Rifkin’S Festival starring Wallace Shawn, Gina Gershon, and Cristoph Waltz opens in St. Louis Friday January 28th at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Theater. Check their website for times Here.
Mort Rifkin, a retired film studies professor, accompanies his publicist wife Sue to the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. He goes not for the films, but because he’s worried that Sue’s fascination with her young buzzed-about film director client, Philippe, might be more than professional. In addition, Mort hopes the change of scenery will provide a respite from his struggle to write a first novel that lives up to his impossibly exacting standards. With Mort’s relentlessly dismissive opinions of Philippe, and Sue’s sharp focus on her career as well as Philippe, their already frayed relationship becomes more strained.

It bodes ill when a film opens with the lead character sitting in his therapist's office complaining about something that has happened in the very recent past. The viewer already has the feeling that they missed something. That they're not in on a joke, a story, a fairy tale. Catching up with the tale may be "Inconceivable!" Sorry. I just had to sneak that in. In Rifkin's Festival the "annoying neurotic" is back. Here, not portrayed by Woody Allen in the role but by great character actor Wallace Shawn (hence the "Princess Bride" reference). He does the genre proud.
Reminiscent of "Manhattan", the film centers around the relationship between Mort Rifkin (Wallace Shawn), a failed novelist who pines over the days he was happiest - teaching cinema, and the much younger, former student he's married to - Sue (Gina Gershon...

Easing his way back into U.S. theaters after a two-year hiatus and an explosively accusatory four-part documentary, Allen v. Farrow, that aired on HBO in 2021, Woody Allen returns with Rifkin’s Festival, an airy, lazy, though rather likable overseas rom-com served with a dose of melancholia and several large portions of cinematic nostalgia.
Shot in picturesque San Sebastián and based around the city’s annual international film festival, Rifkin rehashes bits of earlier Allen efforts, including the artist character from Vicky Cristina Barcelona — does he think all Spanish men are strapping, sexed-up figurative painters? — while revisiting some of his favorite movies in a new light.
The result seems to be primarily aimed at the director’s own age group — a demographic that hasn’t exactly been leading the box office charge these days and that could render this release from MPI Media Group (who briefly put out A Rainy...

"The answers are not always what you wnat to hear." MPI Media Group has debuted an official US trailer for the film Rifkin's Festival, arriving in US theaters in January after originally premiering last year. This film takes place at the illustrious San Sebastian Film Festival in the North of Spain, and it also premiered at the 2020 San Sebastian Film Festival last year. Woody Allen's latest just seems to be another bland tale of jealousy and infidelity, without much more than that to add. A married American couple go to the festival and get caught up in the magic of the event, the beauty and charm of the city and the fantasy of movies. The plot is about a woman who has an affair with a French filmmaker, while her husband falls in love with a beautiful Spaniard. Starring Wallace Shawn with Elena Anaya, Louis Garrel, Gina Gershon, Sergi López,...

Mort Rifkin, the ostensible novelist at the center of “Rifkin’s Festival,” has longterm writer’s block, and it’s hard to imagine that Woody Allen has ever empathized less with a character. Where Mort believes it’s futile to write if the finished work is not going to be on the level of Dostoevsky, the 84-year-old Allen continues churning out screenplays on an annual basis, unencumbered even by the increasingly distant memory of his own greatest work. His 49th feature, “Rifkin’s Festival” is the latest in a lengthy string of undistinguished bagatelles that might all be described as effortless, and not in an especially complimentary fashion.
Following Wallace Shawn and a typically jumbled grab-bag of fine actors as they mosey around the San Sebastián Film Festival — for which the film acts as an extended promo, duly opening this year’s edition — “Rifkin’s Festival” is a scenic summer-wind romcom that...

These days, every new Woody Allen film invites the same question: Is it possible to review the film and not its disgraced filmmaker? “Rifkin’s Festival” makes this challenge especially daunting: All the action takes place at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where the film opened this year’s edition. Wallace Shawn stars as a revered but neurotic director with romantic delusions. And if it seems like Allen is really asking for it, there’s one more factor working against the 84-year-old filmmaker: The film is far from vintage Allen and would struggle to find a mass audiences even before it turned against him.
Having said that, “Rifkin’s Festival” is a notch above middling Allen comedies like last year’s “A Rainy Day in New York,” thanks to delightful turns from Shawn and Gina Gershon as well as some zany stabs at film history in a series of black-and-white dream...

The hearty applause from European journalists at the end of Woody Allen’s online/on-site press conference for “Rifkin’s Festival,” which world premiered on Friday at the San Sebastian Festival, was probably as much for Allen’s career at large as his latest movie in particular.
Opening the festival, and set at the San Sebastian Festival – with at least one scene set in the very Kursaal Center auditorium where the press then caught the film – the movie was received with genteel applause at its end, as well as guffaws at choice gags.
The most obvious delight for the mostly local audience at the Friday’s press screening was also the subject Allen warmed to most in a subsequent press conference: the homage paid by “Rifkin’s Festival” to San Sebastian at large and, more specifically, to its festival.
The Mediapro Studio, which financed much of “Rifkin’s Festival,” wanted...

The 68th edition of Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival gets underway tonight with the world premiere screening of Rifkin’s Festival, Woody Allen’s latest movie.
The filmmaker was unable to jet into the fest due to ongoing pandemic disruption, appearing at the opening press conference via video link from New York. While San Seb won’t have its usual cohort of A-list names, several recognizable faces are heading to Spain in the coming days, including Johnny Depp, Viggo Mortensen, and Matt Dillon, with most of the guests arriving from Europe.
Rifkin’s Festival is set during a fictional edition of the San Sebastian fest and also shot in the town. Allen told press today that he was disappointed not to be returning for his premiere.
“The most delightful part of working on this film was that my family and myself could spend months in San Sebastian,” he commented.

Woody Allen’s latest film “Rifkin’s Festival,” his first since his standing as a filmmaker has fallen following his daughter Dylan Farrow’s resurfaced accusations that he molested her as a girl, has a trailer ahead of it making its world premiere.
“Rifkin’s Festival” will premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where the movie is also set, on Sept. 18. And in the first trailer for the film, we see Wallace Shawn playing a neurotic, Woody Allen-type who falls in love with a Spanish local after his wife begins an affair with a young, French movie director.
The film is a comedy that combines Allen’s love of movies and fantasy, as well as his love of Spain, and features a cast that includes Gina Gershon, Elena Anaya, Louis Garrel, Sergi López and Christoph Waltz. And as Shawn’s character gives a confessional to a therapist in the trailer, it...
