Nearly a decade ago, Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was hanging out at one of Roger and James Deakins’ famous barbecues when he was introduced to a French-Canadian man he didn’t immediately recognize. But as soon as he put a face to the name “Denis Villeneuve,” he instantly called to mind two of the filmmaker’s critically acclaimed Canadian films, Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), as well as his American debut, Prisoners (2013), that he shot with the co-host of that day’s festivities, Roger Deakins. So Fraser and Villeneuve got to know each other that day, before going their separate ways for a few years.
During the intervening time period, Fraser photographed a handful of projects including the first Star Wars spinoff film, Rogue One (2016), as well as the first live-action Star Wars series in The Mandalorian. And then, in 2018, Villeneuve reached out regarding the Dp position on his forthcoming adaptation of...

Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve are both incredible filmmakers who have shown the world that they are the best in what they do, but like many other directors out there, they have their own techniques and strategies when it comes to helming movies.

Outside of perhaps Steven Spielberg and Janusz Kamiński, there may be no director-cinematographer collaboration that’s more extensive in modern-day cinema than that of Wes Anderson and Robert Yeoman. Having shot all of his live-action features, along with his recent Oscar-winning The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Yeoman is now taking a break for Anderson’s next feature The Phoenician Scheme.

With the recent success of the Dune film series, Denis Villeneuve has become one of the most coveted filmmakers in the industry with his work being compared to legendary films like The Empire Strikes Back. However, his prowess extends beyond sci-fi, delving into the complexities of human emotion across genres.

People adore Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine if the excitement surrounding the news of Deadpool 3 was any indication. With just a few movie credits under his belt prior to landing the role of one of Marvel’s most adored comic book characters, the Australian actor, 55, completely changed the character’s status quo in popular culture with his fierce interpretation.
Nevertheless, Jackman possesses multiple dimensions as an actor, much like how Wolverine has changed over the course of his numerous roles. But Prisoners was the one film that really stood out from the rest, at least in the eyes of his fans.

“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).
Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.
Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:

You’d be hard-pressed to find a filmmaker who has put together a finer body of work than Denis Villeneuve has since making his U.S. debut in 2013. From the mold-breaking thrillers of Prisoners, Enemy and Sicario to a murderers’ row of sci-fi films including Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, the French Canadian director’s films have amassed over $1.1 billion in worldwide box office and landed him three Oscar nominations. His winning streak is all the more impressive when you consider that he put his camera down for much of the 2000s in order to refine his cinematic identity. That nine-year gap was still flanked by a handful of lauded Canadian films, but it wasn’t until 2010’s Oscar-nominated Incendies that Villeneuve felt like he’d finally discovered his signature. Now, Dune: Part Two (March 1) is poised to be his new top grosser after effusive early reactions and reviews.

The age-old debate of DC vs. Marvel has been through more than enough ups and downs. If one takes the crown in a department, the other races past it in another. DC Animation has always been superior to Marvel, whereas the MCU has managed to win over audiences more than the DC movies. So it can never be said with assertion, which is better than the other.
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman
Although movies in the MCU until Phase 3 were major success for Marvel Studios, they have dwindled in quality since the beginning of Phase 4. DC on the other hand have not had a good run for the most part, but with the current restructuring under James Gunn and Peter Safran, things seem to be looking up, although the final verdict is still a little while away.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has some words for… well, words.
In a recent interview with The Times, Denis Villeneuve surveyed the state of modern cinema and came to the conclusion that films have been lacking due to television’s recent storytelling dominance, signaling the reliance on dialogue as a primary reason. “Frankly, I hate dialogue,” the filmmaker said, “Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I’m not interested in dialogue at all.”
He continued, championing film’s exploration of form over spoon-fed content: “Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today. Movies have been corrupted by television.” When asked if he’d be interested in helming another Dune sequel — or a new film in general — without any dialogue whatsoever,...

Like a chimera of any intelligent person’s least-favorite storytelling models, we are (in the sense of a diagnosis) finally seeing the cinematic universe intersect with musical biopics. And where to start but the very biggest? Today brings the rather momentous news that Sam Mendes will direct a four-film Beatles epic that tells their story from each member’s perspective, arriving in 2027 via “an innovative [and groundbreaking] release cadence.” If that seems an odd term for movies, you’re correct; I’ve only ever seen it used for software, which is to say: an engineered product.
Though let’s not be too cynical just yet. The Beatles’ Apple Corps Ltd. are fully behind the project, which guarantees more of their music than any narrative feature yet. Mendes has certain ill instincts but, per his Bond pictures, can be a great keep-the-trains-running-on-time craftsman who hires the right people––imagine the Ed Sullivan Show...

From the white paper: Eliminating Stray Light Image Artifacts via Invisible Image Sensor Coverglass The ‘cinematic components’
The white paper titled Eliminating Stray Light Image Artifacts via Invisible Image Sensor Coverglass, talks about two ‘cinematic components’ regarding light that are not desired on machine vision applications, but, on the other hand, can be very much desired by filmmakers. Those factors are scientifically defined as Stray light and Veiling flare. Stray light describes light in a camera that is not intended by the optical design. When stray light hits the image sensor, this causes undesirable optical artifacts in images, such as ghosting and flare. Veiling flare, also known as “flaring” and “veiling glare,” manifests as a haze that washes out the image and reduces contrast when a bright light source is shining on the lens, typically when the source of bright light is outside the photo.

Zack Snyder‘s space adventure film “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” will be running for one week (Dec. 15-21) in selected 70mm theaters before debuting on Netflix. However, the question you should ask yourself is if it’s worth watching a film on a giant screen that was shot entirely on Anamorphic T1.5. On the other hand, why not? We all remember Nolan’s Oppenheimer which was shot wide open using IMAX film cameras and was screened on 70mm as well.

While promoting the home video version of his historical blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” director Christopher Nolan recently stressed that it’s really the only way to go when it comes to watching his movies at home. Not only does he finely calibrate his films for the best home video experience (leading to the 4K Ultra HD version of the movie to sell out everywhere) but he stressed buying the movie on physical media means you can “put it on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you.”
And while, yes, he’s joking, he is right about one thing: the only way you can insure that the movies you love will be around is by owning them on physical media. Thankfully the home video labels have been stepping up their game, with deluxe packages overflowing with extras and feature films presented in their best possible format.

This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.

Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

“We don’t know who’s going to direct yet. It’s all gonna be about timing,” producer Smith said. “We’ve got obviously a wealth of great partners on it, everybody from Taylor Sheridan to Chris McQuarrie as a partner on it, but it’ll all be about the timing and what aligns with everyone’s schedule.”
McQuarrie and Sheridan have not publicly been confirmed as producers.
Luckinbill added that Sheridan is “so busy” with his other project but that he “stays close” to the budding “Sicario 3.”

From digital photography in “Zodiac” to de-aging in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” David Fincher has always been quick to embrace new filmmaking technologies. But when it comes to the AI revolution that threatens to disrupt Hollywood, the director is taking a wait-and-see approach.
In a new interview with British GQ, Fincher shared his thoughts on the creative potential of AI. While he’s less concerned about the technology than some of his peers, he explained that he believes art needs a human touch to be truly great.
“I think AI’s a really powerful tool,” Fincher said. “And for my money, I have not heard an AI Beatles song that compares to ‘Eleanor Rigby.’ So until somebody plays an AI song that knocks me out… maybe that’s just where we’re at now, and I may be eating my words in a year, but I think ultimately,...

A version of this story about the resurgence of celluloid presentation first appeared in the College Issue of TheWrap magazine.
Judging from the lines snaking down the street at 70mm mini festivals taking place everywhere in the past few years — from NYC’s Paris Theater to Chicago’s Music Box Theatre to L.A.’s American Cinematheque theaters — one thing is abundantly clear: The love for celluloid is everlasting. But aside from the proper showcasing of “Oppenheimer,” “Licorice Pizza” and—and if you’re lucky, movies such as “Nope” and “Last Night in Soho”, is the ongoing passion for celluloid reflected in current film school curriculum? In the age of digital everything, are future cineastes learning more about the tactile art of tape-handling and editing their work on Steenbecks?
Quite possibly more than you might think. Many institutions still regularly offer courses studying celluloid, particularly 35mm, including New York City...

At five of the last 10 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. Recent lensing winners “Avatar” (2009), “Inception” (2010), “Hugo” (2011), “Life of Pi” (2012), “Gravity” (2013), “Blade Runner 2049” (2018) and “1917” (2020) also took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Christopher Nolan shaved 30 days off the shooting calendar for “Oppenheimer” in order to make the movie more realistic.
Production designer Ruth De Jong told the “Team Deakins” podcast earlier this month that the blockbuster about the development of the atom bomb was supposed to have a longer production timeline, but the director reduced the number of shooting days in order to prioritize the production design.
“Oppenheimer” has grossed nearly $778 million worldwide, including more than $299 million domestically, and last week passed the totals of 2014’s “Interstellar” and this year’s “Fast X” at the global box office.
The three-hour biopic was filmed in just 55 days, instead of the original 85, De Jong told the podcast hosts, cinematographer Roger Deakins and his collaborator, James Deakins.
The money saved from consolidating the filming, she said, enabled the reconstruction of Los Alamos, New Mexico, without relying on visual effects.

TeamDeakins, the podcast run by acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins and James Deakins, his collaborator, a script supervisor, and his wife, is consistently entertaining and listenable. On a recent episode, the Deakins duo had actor Benicio del Toro on the podcast to discuss their work together on “Sicario”—Roger was the Dp, del Toro co-starred— and much of the Latin American actor’s impressive career.

Ridley Scott is opining his “Blade Runner” regrets.
The director, who helmed the original 1982 film starring Harrison Ford, stepped away from directing the 2017 sequel “Blade Runner 2049” due to a scheduling conflict with “Alien: Covenant,” a franchise installment for his “Alien” series.
“I shouldn’t have had to make that decision,” Scott told Empire. “But I had to. I should have done ‘Blade Runner 2.'”
Scott served as an executive producer on “Blade Runner 2049,” with Denis Villeneuve directing. The film went on to win Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, and Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins. Director Villeneuve admitted that “Blade Runner 2049” was a film that “flirted with disaster” due to its large budget and lackluster box office, grossing less than $100 million against its reported $300 production and marketing costs.

Just as the global pandemic seemed to profoundly accelerate the demise of movies and theatergoing—something we all cynically assumed would happen, but hell, not that fast! Not so soon! culturally, our internal clocks all have an impending sense of doom that seems to be ticking faster than ever. Climate change is something we presume will destroy our lives eventually, but globally, it’s been unnerving to watch raging forest fires in Australia that appear apocalyptic, or more recently, if you’re a New Yorker, experience firsthand alarming smoke and air quality pollution that looks like it’s been shot by Roger Deakins on the set of “Blade Runner 2049.” Intentional timed or not, this is where Steven Soderbergh and writer Kurt Anderson are coming from with their surprise new sci-fi-ish satirical series, “Command Z”.

Spoiler Alert: This contains spoilers from “Swagger” Season 2, now streaming on AppleTV+.
As Reggie Rock Bythewood was gearing up for AppleTV+’s second season of “Swagger,” the filmmaker was thinking about how to elevate the series and take it to another level.
One film that came to mind was Sam Mendes’ “1917” and how cinematographer Roger Deakins had shot the film and presented it as if it were one continuous long shot.
The series follows a team of basketball players inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant and in the latest “maze,” as Bythewood calls it, the team down to six players, Jace (Isaiah R. Hill), Phil (Solomon Irama), Musa (Caleel Harris), Drew, Royale (Ozie Nzeribe), and Nick (Jason Rivera) head to Maryland’s Youth Facility, a detention center for young offenders for a game. “I thought about ‘1917’ and the entire film is shot as if it were one shot.

Cormac McCarthy, the literary giant whose violently nihilistic visions of America influenced a generation of writers and filmmakers, has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by publisher Knopf. McCarthy passed away at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The news was first reported by Publishers Weekly.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, McCarthy published his first novel, “The Orchard Keeper,” in 1965. He slowly rose to prominence in the literary world and eventually became known as one of the most important American authors of the 20th century for novels such as “Blood Meridian” and “The Road.”
In 2005 he published “No Country for Old Men,” which Joel and Ethan Coen adapted into a 2007 film that elevated their status as dramatic filmmakers and cemented McCarthy’s Hollywood legacy. Cinematographer Roger Deakins recently reflected on the making of the film, recalling that “Joel said we’re doing this script, ’No Country for Old Men.

Roger Deakins wasn’t onboard with how “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” train sequence was turning out.
The Oscar-winning cinematographer reflected on the iconic scene from the 2007 film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, namely calling out how “frustrated” he was over the “dinky” train used for historical purposes on set. The sequence in question involves Jesse James (Pitt) staging an elaborate robbery of a train during the first act of the Andrew Dominik film.
“I’ve got to say, Andrew and I got kind of frustrated because we couldn’t really find a train line that we liked and we couldn’t find a period train to the scale that Andrew wanted,” Deakins said during a panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y. “We ended up shooting in Edmonton [in Alberta, Canada] on a museum line and luckily it goes through this little wooded area, but the train was really dinky.

When people talk about the magic of cinema, they’re usually not referring to monologues. More often than not, it’s the awe-inspiring visuals and imaginary worlds brought to life that give the phrase “movie magic” the ring of truth. None of that would be possible without visual effects, an ever-evolving field that pushes filmmakers like James Cameron and Peter Jackson further and further in their quest to create that special spark.

Keeravaani and lyricist Chandrabose — the 95th Academy Awards includes just a single Black winner, costume designer Ruth Carter, who picked up her second Oscar for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and just one Oscar for a Latino filmmaker, going to Mexican director Guillermo del Toro for his animated feature Pinocchio.
On one measure, however, the 2023 Oscars get top marks. This year’s event was one of the most globally diverse in the event’s history.
Winners in 13 of 24 Oscar categories hailed from outside the U.S. — 15 if you include Ke Huy Quan, (who was born in Vietnam and immigrated...

It’s a question even the most fastidious awards watcher might have trouble answering off the top of their head: Who won the Oscars last year? While Best Picture winners are often impossible to forget, keeping track of who took home Academy Awards in the below-the-line categories often requires a little more work. Here’s who won at the ceremony last year — and a preview of the 2023 Oscars as well.
Who won the Oscars last year?
The 94th Oscars took place on March 27, 2022, a relative return to normal after the 2021 ceremony was directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. While the list of 2022 Oscar winners (seen below) represents the academy’s take on the best of 2021 in film, the ceremony won’t be remembered for those who took home Academy Awards. Instead, it will live in infamy as the show when Will Smith, who won Best Actor for “King Richard,” went...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

On Sunday evening, the reveal of the 2023 Oscars winners list brought to a close one of the longest awards seasons in recent memory. It probably felt even longer to the ultimate Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing winner, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which premiered one year ago at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. It was on March 11, a full 16 days before the now-infamous 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, that David Ehrlich reviewed the now Best Picture winner for IndieWire. Even before The Slap, there were hot dog fingers.
At the Oscars, the Daniels-directed film won the most awards that any Best Picture winner has taken home since “Slumdog Millionaire,” which picked up eight in 2008. With seven wins, “Everything Everywhere” actually won the most Oscars of any film full-stop since 2013’s “Gravity” also won seven Oscars. But the Daniels’ film was...
