"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.
But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Before his death, Mahoney had an incredible career in film and television — his supporting role as Martin Crane in...

"River's Edge" was one of the most important independent films of the 1980s. Directed by Tim Hunter from a screenplay by Neil Jimenez, it tells the soul-deadening story of a group of teens who cover for their friend after he murders another of their friends. What makes the movie especially disturbing is the teens' indifference; when they're taken to view the nude corpse, which the killer has dumped at the title location, most of them gaze at it with a galling lack of emotion.
"River's Edge" earned raves from critics and won Best Picture at the 1988 Independent Spirit Awards. It launched the careers of Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye, and Daniel Roebuck, and went a long way toward spurring Dennis Hopper's late '80s comeback. It is a scathing experience, one that leaves such an indelible mark you need not revisit it. You'll never shake the image of Danyi Deats...

“I only have nice memories with you,” she responded.

Neil Jimenez, who won three Indie Spirit Awards for writing River’s Edge and writing and co-directing The Waterdance, has died. He was 62. His sister, Kathleen Serio, said Jimenez died December 11 of heart failure in Arroyo Grande, CA.
Jimenez won his first Spirit Award in 1988 for his screenplay to River’s Edge, the Tim Hunter-directed thriller whose stacked cast included Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye and Dennis Hopper. The 1986 pic about a group of California friends who get ensnarled in a murder and cover-up also won Best Feature at the Spirits that year and was a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
The Sacramento native went on to pen or co-write the scripts for Where the River Runs Black (1986) and The Dark Wind (1991) and the story for Bette Midler period drama For the Boys (1991). Jimenez’s next project was The Waterdance, which starred Eric Stoltz as...

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.
I hope you’ll find it interesting following as I dig further into a genre I’ve always loved, and maybe find some hidden gems along the way yourselves.
Week 1’s film can be found here
Week 2’s films are here.
The Blob (1988) Dir: Chuck Russell
Horror fans, and I count myself as guilty as any of them, are given to complaining about relentless remakes, but it’s worth remembering that they were never exactly thin on the ground. 30 years after Steve McQueen made his screen debut in the original version, this take on The Blob seems to be trying to do...

Ione Skye has joined the upcoming Netflix series “Beef” in a guest starring role, Variety has learned exclusively.
The 10-episode dramedy series will be led by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. It follows two people who find themselves involved in a road rage incident that begins to consume every thought and action of their lives.
Netflix would not comment on the details of Skye’s character, but sources say she is a mysterious woman whose mere presence haunts one of the lead characters.
Along with Yeun, Wong, and Skye, the cast for the series also includes Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, David Choe, and Patti Yasutake, while Maria Bello, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min, Andrew Santino, Rekstizzy, Mia Serafino, and Remy Holt will appear in recurring guest star roles.

Wayne’s World is celebrating its 30-year anniversary and it’s party time. Excellent. Originally released on Feb. 14, 1992, and most recently re-released in a Blu-ray Steelbook edition, it brought Mike Myers and Dana Carvey’s lo-fi cable hosts Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar from weekly segment appearances on Saturday Night Live to global domination on the big screen.
Written by Myers, Bonnie Turner, and Terry Turner, Wayne’s World wasn’t expected to be a hit, much less a comedy classic with a $183 million worldwide box office take, and a sequel. It defied convention, enthusiastically breaking the fourth wall with characters directly addressing the camera, and exploring self-referential jokes, random cultural spoofs, and self-fulfilling alternative ending gags.
Also starring Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere, Lara Flynn Boyle, Brian Doyle-Murray, Chris Farley, Ed O’Neill, and Ione Skye, Wayne’s World captured every key demographic. Advertisers begged to get spoofed in the product placement take-down takeoffs,...

"Always did have a flavor for danger." Lionsgate has dropped a new trailer for a dark, edgy thriller comedy titled Habit, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff. This film has dropped out of nowhere, not hitting any festivals or anywhere else before opening in August this summer. It definitely looks like a very Los Angeles film made by Los Angeles people for Los Angeles people. A street smart party girl gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out by masquerading as a Nun with her other BFFs to escape a L.A. drug lord. The Habit ensemble cast includes Bella Thorne, Gavin Rossdale, Libby Mintz, Andreja Pejic, Hana Mae Lee, Ione Skye, Aaron Diaz, Jamie Hince, Hayley Marie Norman, Alison Mosshart, with Paris Jackson and Josie Ho. This (obviously) looks all wild & crazy, and instantly forgettable, another of these mediocre crime...

Step aside, Mr. Grey, because HBO Max has released the first teaser trailer for the Cristin Milioti-led dark comedy “Made for Love,” and it features a truly haunting rendition of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” by Ray Romano.
The series, an adaptation of the 2017 novel by Alissa Nutting, stars Milioti as Hazel Green, a woman on the run after 10 years in a suffocating marriage to tech billionaire Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen). Hazel soon discovers that Byron has implanted a monitoring device — the Made for Love chip — in her brain, allowing him to watch her every move as she seeks refuge with her aging widower father Herbert (Ray Romano) and his “synthetic partner,” Diane.
Yep, seems pretty crazy.
In addition to Milioti, Magnussen and Romano, the series also stars Dan Bakkedahl, Noma Dumezweni and Augusto Aguilera. Guest stars include Caleb Foote, Kym Whitley, Nyasha Hatendi, Patti Harrison, Ione Skye, Jon Daly,...

Blockbuster Video was recently back in the news after its last remaining outpost in Bend, Oregon began offering movie lovers a chance to spend the night on an air mattress or pull-out couch, surrounded by rows and rows of new releases. The cost was the same as a movie rental — $4 (not accounting for those exorbitant late fees!). The AirBnB promotion went viral, riding a crest of social media interest both from Twitter-users who fondly remember spending weekends picking out movies at their local Blockbuster, as well as from Gen Z members for whom the idea of a “video” is as relevant as a Spanish galleon.
Now, 1091 Pictures has acquired worldwide digital and broadcast rights to “The Last Blockbuster,” the story of how one small town video store managed to survive the decline and fall of its corporate parent. The film follows Sandi Harding, the manager of the Oregon-based Blockbuster...

Cameron Crowe celebrates his 62nd birthday on July 13, 2019. The Oscar-winning writer-director has firmly established himself as one of the most distinctive cinematic voices working today, creating comedic dramas about the inherent goodness of people. But how many of his titles remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back Crowe’s 10 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1957 in Palm Springs, California, Crowe got his start as a teenage music journalist for “Rolling Stone,” touring with the Allman Brothers when he was just 16 years old. His love for rock bands landed him lucrative interviews with such hot groups as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles.

If you haven’t seen Cameron Crowe’s feature directorial debut “Say Anything” in a while, you’ve likely forgotten just how early in the romantic dramedy John Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler delivers a now-iconic speech which basically lays out his entire worldview. In the 1989 classic, Cusack was memorably cast as the chronically underachieving Lloyd, a kickboxer with a heart of gold who unexpectedly spends his post-high school graduation summer romancing the beautiful, but somewhat aloof valedictorian Diane Court (Ione Skye).
On just their second date, Lloyd is dispatched to a dinner at Diane’s house, where her imposing father Jim (John Mahoney) lightly grills him about his career plans.
The result is a charming, if somewhat stilted monologue about Lloyd’s desires — he doesn’t “want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career,” or any other permutation of those tasks — but as Crowe himself tells it,...

A panel of top principals from classic 1989 coming-of-age romantic comedy Say Anything… celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary and its refreshingly timeless sensibility during a Tribeca Talks event Tuesday night in New York.
Beyond the nostalgic embrace of the familiar from the sellout crowd (a loud ovation during the famed boom-box scene was no surprise), writer-director Cameron Crowe was genuinely touched to revisit this early-career touchstone, and the way beloved 19-year-old would-be pro kickboxer Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack, was portrayed as “a warrior for optimism.”
That spirit, which became the heart of Lloyd’s rebelliousness during this time of the Reagan era, became a central point for Cusack as well. “We landed on that and John electrified into that idea,” Crowe said.
Cusack, seen via satellite after a day of filming Gillian Flynn’s new Amazon series Utopia in Chicago, took the message a step further and appeared...

Welcome to the West, long after the frontier has closed. Allison Anders’ marvelous drama of a three-girl family is a big step for indie cinema, a highly entertaining examination of women’s aspirations and frustrations out on the non-glamorous working class fringe. Writer-director Anders wastes no time with a terrific cast — Brooke Adams, Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk’s family lacks a father, and ‘men who walk’ becomes the central issue in their lives. Filmed in a gloriously believable New Mexico desert.
