Spoilers ahead for "Coherence."
There are movies often cited as being confusing or mind-melting, like "Inception" or "Memento," which really aren't that complicated. Then there's something like "Primer," which requires detailed diagrams and hours-long YouTube explainers to begin to unravel its web of twists and turns. Sitting happily in the middle is James Ward Byrkit's "Coherence," one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade and a movie that is complex and mild-melting yet not so complex that it's hard to follow.
The film begins with an alluring premise of four couples meeting at a friend's house for dinner on the night a comet is passing by the Earth. While they all have messy relationships to navigate, the comet causes quantum decoherence, creating split realities and allowing the guests' alternate selves to intrude into their reality, and vice-versa. It's a concept that allows for plenty of twists while also allowing for simplicity,...

A decade ago, director James Ward Byrkit brought us a surreal, Twilight Zone-ish sci-fi thriller called Coherence (watch it Here), which JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski gave an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. Now Deadline has revealed that Byrkit and It’s What’s Inside producer Kate Andrews are teaming up to develop a follow-up of some sort to Coherence! As Deadline notes, “Plot details are being kept under lock and key — including whether the new film will be a prequel, sequel, or a different story entirely.”
Byrkit crafted the story for the first film with Alex Manugian, coming up with the following set-up: Eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of events due to the malevolent influence of a passing comet.
Coherence starred Emily Foxler, who now goes by Emily Baldoni (Five Feet Apart), Maury Sterling (Smokin’ Aces), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Seeking a Friend for the End of the World...

The other night, I had a hankering to watch a good high-concept movie I'd never seen before. I saw 2014's "Coherence" on a few lists, and being almost wholly unfamiliar with it, I decided to fire it up and give it a shot. Thankfully, this film gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and eventual "Hustlers" director Lorene Scafaria star in this ultra-low budget brain melter about a group of friends gathering for a dinner party while a comet passes by overhead. When the power goes out, a couple of them trek up the street to a neighboring house with the lights on -- only to discover something that shakes them to their core. I won't get into the specifics here, but the film has an incredible conceit, and director James Ward Byrkit, who shot...

Coherence centres on eight friends enjoying a very grown up, suburban dinner party. A comet is passing by Earth and changes to the atmosphere are making some of them jumpy and uncomfortable. An unexplainable shattered iPhone screen is an early warning sign that something unusual is coming their way. During what seems like the longest night, their real lives, jarred by this astronomical anomaly, are confronted with multiple, alternative realities of themselves.
Their problems start with a power cut and the intriguing sight of just one house in the entire neighbourhood that still has its lights on. Two of the dinner party go and investigate. When they return one has a cut on his head and doesn’t want to talk about what he’s seen.

From D Films, Sneak Peek director/cinematogapher James Ward Byrkit's impressive, "Twilight Zone"-inspired debut science fiction thriller "Coherence", now available on DVD/VOD/Est:
"Coherence" is based on 'quantum mechanics', referring to a quantum state, where different versions of reality can still interchange with each other.
Director Byrkit did have a specific idea for the film, but cast improvisational actors, giving them the basic outline of their characters, motivations and major plot points:
"...'Emily' (Baldoni) and her boyfriend 'Kevin' (Maury Sterling) are two of several people attending a dinner party at the house of 'Mike' (Nicholas Brendon).
"Kevin's ex-girlfriend' 'Laurie' (Lauren Maher) will be there, making things tense for both Kevin and Emily.
"The dinner party goes fairly well until the power goes out following a comet sighting. They discover that a house down the road still has power and a few of them decide to investigate.

Schrodinger's cat is an imaginary illustration of a paradox: "When does a quantum system stop existing as a superposition of states and become one or the other?" Writer/director James Ward Byrkit explores this thought experiment and various results in his first feature, Coherence, which adds a new dimension to the typical dinner party film.
Coherence evolves at an intimate dinner gathering of four couples: former dancer Em (Emily Baldoni) and Kevin (Maury Sterling), former Roswell actor Mike (Nicholas Brendon) and his introverted wife Lee (Lorene Scafaria), older couple Hugh (Hugo Armstrong) and Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), and Amir (Alex Manugian) who brings his new girlfriend Laurie (Lauren Maher).
It's quickly revealed that Laurie has an intimate history with Kevin, which leads to awkward moments, but Em is more concerned about something she's heard -- the astronomic event of a lifetime taking place that same night. Miller's Comet is due to pass near Earth,...

One of the surprise treats of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is low-key sci-fi thriller, Coherence: the sort of film where walking in with no expectations is the best way to approach things (but please do keep reading this review).
James Ward Byrkit‘s feature follows a group of old friends whose dinner party is cut short by a power outage, thought to have been caused by the passing of a comet that night. Part of the group ventures across the street to the one remaining house with power where they discover the full psychological horror of their predicament.

Like the better episodes of The Twilight Zone, Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Shane Carruth’s Primer before it, indie sci-fi Coherence is a brilliantly staged and sharply written mindscrew of a movie that left me equal parts giddy, chilled and bewildered. It’s easily one of the most thought-provoking and deeply engrossing cinematic experiences of the year – not to mention a highly auspicious debut for writer-director James Ward Byrkit.
It’s hard to talk about Coherence without spoiling its many fascinating twists and turns, but I’ll do my best. Our protagonists are eight friends who come together for a dinner party on the night of an astronomical anomaly – “Miller’s Comet,” which is passing closer to Earth than ones recorded in the past. As Coherence opens, hints of the comet’s influence can be seen in broken phone screens and disrupted signals.

In James Ward Byrkit’s indie sci-fi thriller Coherence, a seemingly ordinary dinner party amongst long-time friends (Nicholas Brendon, Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling and Elizabeth Gracen, to name a few) goes horribly awry after a passing comet causes a disturbance in the natural balance of existence, revealing dark secrets, challenging everyone’s perception of space and time and ultimately altering the universe as they know it.
A no-budget, mind-bending exercise in the fragility of human relationships with a bit of quantum physics thrown in to really get you thinking, Coherence is thoughtful and well-made thriller with a hint of mystery to it that simmers nicely below the surface from start to finish. As Byrkit reveals tiny hints and clues, his story also has a bit of fun with the space-time continuum, leaving his characters left to figure out just which reality they actually belong to. Deploys twisty sci-fi concepts to warp the almost-clichéd dinner-party soap opera into a horror story of the human condition in the face of quantum philosophy. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m hungry for smart science fiction
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Pro relationship tip: Do not go to a dinner party with a bunch of your friends who all have long-term interconnected relationships — with all the unresolved resentments and secret entanglements that can come with that — when there’s a quantum anomaly in the neighborhood. Not when there are important, even life-changing, decisions to be made at the same time.
See, just as Em (Emily Foxler: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) is having to decide whether to fly off to Vietnam with her boyfriend, Kevin (Maury Sterling: Veronica Mars, The A-Team), for four months to accompany him for his work,...

If you’re in New York or Los Angeles this weekend, run don’t walk to James Ward Byrkit’s dizzying metaphysical horror film “Coherence,” or Roman Polanski’s elegant pas-de-deux “Venus in Fur.” But think twice before heading to Clint Eastwood’s 1960s musical biopic “Jersey Boys,” meeting a mixed critical response, or Paul Haggis’ awful collage of interlocking soap operas “Third Person,” currently crashing with reviewers.
On the indie side of the spectrum, you can catch Brit Joanna Hogg’s “Exhibition,” starring Tom Hiddleston, which Indiewire says has shades of Michael Haneke by way of Miranda July; Filipino helmer Lav Diaz’s latest multi-hour epic, “Norte, The End of History,” will hold court at NY’s Lincoln Center after a long festival tour dating back to Cannes 2013, where “Venus in Fur” also bowed; and Jan Troell’s austere WWII-era psychodrama “The Last Sentence” hits select markets too.

Time Crimes: Byrkit’s Exercise Somewhat Overbaked by Inchoate Ideas
Fans of Shane Carruth’s blend of intelligent and hyper complicated low-fi sci-fi should certainly be interested in James Ward Byrkit’s debut, Coherence, a concept that is, of course, facetious at best in this mind-bending puzzle. Playing like the relationship issue version of Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, the initial set-up reaches dizzying heights of possibility and discussion worthy instances. Inevitably, however, the narrative is constricted by its own structure of multiplied repetitions, which are necessary for intricate developments even as they tend to become an impediment to continued investment.
During the evening when a comet speeds notably close to Earth, several old friends converge at a dinner party. Seven of them are friends, while one of them, Amir (Alex Manugian) is bringing a new girlfriend, Laurie (Lauren Maher), who used to date Kevin (Maury Sterling). Kevin is now in...

A full trailer has been released for a solid-looking psychological thriller called Coherence. It was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, and the story follows the events of a night when an “astrological anomaly” affects life on Earth. I enjoy watching movies that are supposed to mess with your head like this.
On the night of an astrological anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, Coherence is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.
The movie stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong, and Lorene Scafaria. It's set to be released in theaters and VOD on June 20th. I'll definitely be checking this one out.

One of the more intriguing thrillers I saw out of Fantastic Fest last year was Coherence. It's more sci-fi in nature, but it has the pulse of a sinister Twilight Zone episode that I think horror fans will enjoy. A trailer has hit in anticipation of a limited theatrical run/VOD debut on June 20th. Coherence was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, and it stars Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian (who also conceived of the story), Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong and Lorene Scafaria.

One of the most buzzed-about films at Fantastic Fest last year was the low-fi science fiction story Coherence. Written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, the film is partially improvised, and tells of the “reality-bending” effect an an astrological anomaly has over the course of one night. Starting this week, fans of the radio anthology series Suspense will be able to hear new versions of their favorite classics broadcast on Sirius Xm BookRadio 80 two nights a week.
The updated Suspense airs Wednesdays (7:30pm Et/4:30pm Pt) and Sundays (11:30pm Et/8:30pm Pt), and Episode #1 is an adaptation of Lovecraft's 'Cool Air,' starring Adrienne Wilkinson and Daamen Krall.
The original Suspense, which ran from 1942-1962, was known as “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills” and featured a virtual 'who’s who' of Hollywood stars, including horror legends Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre. Though many of its episodes were murder mysteries, the original Suspense made many forays into pure horror, such as its adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror and Curt Siodmak’s Donovan’s Brain.
As for the new Suspense, it goes in a somewhat different direction.

In the H.G. Wells original story, Martians spy on the Earth and find it ripe for the picking. They strike at the Earth, finding us humans to be weak and easy prey. They forget just one thing. It’s flu season. And so they plot their return, this time with all their shots. We humans know the Martians will return and so we prepare for the dusty red devils in their poorly balanced machinations. This time we bring the hardware and the fight is on. Below is the trailer for this excellent looking and very adult animated return to the H.G. Wells story. We first reported on this project back in June, but now that the first mech-tastic trailer just dropped today we're even more excited to check out Joe Pearson's War of the Worlds: Goliath. I mean, it's steampunk, it's got an interesting throwback animation style and more massive rampaging robot war machines then you can possibly imagine.

Supposedly this will be narrated by Adrian Paul (you should all know who he is) who also plays the main character, War of the Worlds: Goliath is an animated to sequel to H.G. Well's famous nevel set in a steampunk world. It's a coming of age story which follows a group of people graduating from military school as the martians start invading, for the second time. It's produced by Tripod Entertainment (which I assume is the same prod company behind Reign of Fire) is directed by Joe Pearson, written by David Abramowitz and also involves Peter Wingfield, James Arnold Taylor, Elizabeth Gracen, Jim Byrnes and Adam Baldwin. The flick is currently in production with a dvd release scheduled for 2010. And we have a big concept art gallery to go along with the news!
