The investigative journalism we see on TV is completely true — except for the parts that are completely made up. But how can we tell what’s real and what’s fabricated? Inventing Anna, the new Shondaland series on Netflix about Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), the Russian-born faux heiress who elegantly finessed banks, hotels and socialites out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, gives viewers lots of opportunities to ask this question. Based on Jessica Pressler’s 2018 New York magazine feature on Delvey, Inventing Anna closely follows reporter Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), a fictionalized version of Pressler, as she attempts to connect Delvey’s dots — and make her deadline.
Inventing Anna is as much Vivian’s story as it is Anna’s — in certain respects, they’re both doing the titular inventing. Vivian’s obsession with telling Anna’s story isn’t totally selfless; she’s trying to redeem herself from a recent career setback,...

As Hollywood consistently churns out box office hits, it’s common for successful films to spawn franchises in pursuit of continued success through sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and many other ways. However, some of these sequels don’t always stay up to the mark. Following are several examples of movies where Hollywood’s pursuit of extending classic hits led to disappointing sequels.

Terror Vision has quickly become one of my go-to labels for obscure horror titles, and they're getting a jump-start on the Halloween season with #13WeeksOfHalloween, offering an eclectic mix of new, rare, and cult releases on VHS, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, LP, and cassette:
"Halloween is Terror Vision's favorite time of the year but it's always a bummer when it's over. Much like many of you, the beloved genre distributor begins celebrating the spooky season in September... but this year, that's not good enough - and that's why they've created #13WeeksOfHalloween.

White House Plumbers shouldn’t require a spoiler warning. The HBO miniseries is about the Watergate scandal. But, since it’s told from the perspective of Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the five-episode satirical drama covers a ton of ground that the average person is likely coming upon for the first time.
“There are a lot of people who know Nixon resigned, maybe they’ve heard the word Watergate, maybe they only know ‘gate,’ like they’ve seen this-gate and that-gate. There’s an opportunity here to just let people know what President Nixon did. It’s a story where, maybe it’s been long enough that it’s time to remind people. But now, let’s go one step further,” said David Mandel, who directed all five episodes and is an executive producer alongside the show’s creators and writers,...

The Netflix limited series Inventing Anna follows the intriguing story of Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey), a high-society con artist who successfully scams wealthy New Yorkers out of their fortunes. Emmy award-winning actor Julia Garner, who captured the essence of the fraudulent debutante, was in good company on the set of the successful series.
Six-time Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky portrayed investigative journalist Vivian Kent, who was responsible for unraveling the scam. While the character was based on a real-life reporter, the My Girl star made the role her own, pulling from her personal experiences when she worked as a journalist.

Frequent collaborators and co-directors Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi’s upcoming documentary, “Personality Crisis: One Night Only,” will premiere April 14 at 8 p.m. on Showtime.
“Personality Crisis: One Night Only” has also released a trailer providing audiences a peek into the lives of Johansen, the one-time New York Dolls lead singer who later performed as Buster Poindexter. Focusing on Johansen, his legacy and his special January 2020 performance, the film documents the punk legend as he “regales the audience with stories and music illuminating the art and cultural evolution of New York City,” according to the film’s logline.
Scorsese explained what drew him to this project: “I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making ‘Mean Streets’… Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City. On “Inventing Anna,” Anna “Delvey” Sorokin has no time for her boyfriend Chase (Saamer Usmani), but Irl, Screen Actors Guild Award voters definitely had time for Julia Garner. The 29-year-old performer received a whopping three nominations from the guild this year, including one for her portrayal of Sorokin on the Netflix true-crime drama in the limited series/TV movie actress category. Should the now seven-time nominee triumph for the uber-memeified zeitgeist hit, she would take home her very first statuette.
Created and produced by Shonda Rhimes, “Inventing Anna” is a nine-part dramatization of the story of Russian-born Anna Sorokin, who, using the surname Delvey, conned numerous rich New Yorkers into believing she was a German heiress with access to a substantial fortune. She used this persona to secure loans while working toward her goal of opening an exclusive art-themed club. Inspired by Jessica Pressler’s 2018 viral New York Magazine article,...

Ten years ago, actor Sean Hayes and playwright David Adjmi were working together to develop a play based on the life of Oscar Levant, the actor, pianist and notorious wit of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Now Hayes is preparing to bring Good Night, Oscar to Broadway next spring. The play is written by Doug Wright.
Exactly how, why and when Hayes and Adjmi split up their partnership on the project is being disputed by both sides in an unusually public way. Adjmi wrote a long Facebook post detailing his perspective earlier this week, as publicity for Good Night, Oscar is just beginning to emerge. Theater twitter took note, as did The New York Times.
In response, Hayes, Wright and their producer Beth Williams have released their own extensive statement, obtained by Deadline. The two accounts of exactly how Levant came into Hayes’ life are notably different.

Inventing Anna became an instant hit when it was released earlier this year. The series gave us plenty of true crime material to pour over – but where exactly does fact stop and fiction start?
The Netflix series – which stars Ozark actor Julia Garner as scammer Anna Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin) – was one of the streamer’s most anticipated releases to date, and captivated audiences when it finally arrived in February.
The show, however, also caused a major stir. Netflix has since been sued by Rachel DeLoache Williams, former Vanity Fair staffer and real-life former friend of Delvey’s who is portrayed in the series by actor Katie Lowes.
Williams filed a lawsuit on Monday (29 August) claiming that she was falsely depicted in the drama as “unethical,” “greedy,” “snobbish” and “disloyal”.

When Allison Estrin, who just earned her first Emmy nomination as one of the casting directors of Netflix’s “Inventing Anna,” was offered congratulations on her recognition, she didn’t initially know for which of her projects she had been acknowledged (other eligible shows she had worked on included HBO Max’s “The Other Two” and Showtime’s “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber”).
“I just started getting a lot of texts and emails saying, ‘Congratulations!’ And I called Henry Russell Bergstein, whom I cast this with — and we also work on a couple of other projects together, like ‘The Other Two’ — and I was like, ‘Wait, do you know what we’re getting congratulations on?'” shared the nominee with Gold Derby in a new webchat, highlighting how “exciting” it was to learn that they had landed their citation for “Inventing Anna.” “This show just has such a special place in my heart.

One of the most frequent jokes that isn’t really a joke is that when it comes to various Hollywood movie and TV awards, industry folks like to vote for people they’ve worked with before.
Were that true, the legendarily interconnected Kevin Bacon would have all of the trophies. But among the nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, the acting fields are dominated by deep ensemble casts and, at the same time, other big ensembles feel like the biggest victims of these category-clogging juggernauts.
In our 500-plus show universe, in which six- to eight-episode limited series are in vogue and even most broadcast shows no longer produce 22 (or more) episodes per season, a star can be top-of-the-call-sheet on one project and a day player on another in the same year, giving some lucky shows five or 10 supporting performances from actors who,...

Pronouns matter more than gore or suspense in “They/Them,” a tepid flip-the-script horror movie whose title doubles as its logline when you say the “slash” out loud. Set at a janky gay conversion camp, this Blumhouse-produced, Peacock-released LGBT empowerment exercise presents itself as a cross between “Friday the 13th” and “But I’m a Cheerleader.” Alas, it’s so committed to affirmational messages about queer identity not being a choice, a condition or a legitimate motive to get axed by a deranged serial killer, that the movie all but forgets to be scary — although enlisting Kevin Bacon as too-genial-to-be-trusted camp overseer Owen Whistler nearly makes it work.
“I wanted my favorite genre to celebrate who I was, so I wrote this movie,” openly gay writer-director John Logan told the closing-night crowd of Outfest — the first audience to see his well-intentioned feature directing debut. Fine, but since when does horror celebrate anything?...

The flick has a stellar cast, and the official trailer certainly leaves you wanting more.
"Kevin Bacon plays Owen Whistler in this slasher horror film set at an Lgbtqia+ conversion camp," reads the logline for the horror movie.

As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves.
When a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous.

When Kevin Bacon in the trailer for “They/Them” welcomes a group of queer teens to a gay conversion camp and promises them “a safe space” that will be inclusive for everyone, “safe” hardly means that you won’t be murdered.
“They/Them” is an LGBTQ+ horror thriller from writer and director John Logan and the team at Blumhouse Productions, and the title itself even has fun with some pronouns, as it’s pronounced “They Slash Them,” as in a slasher movie.
But the story actually comes from a personal place for Logan, the writer of “Skyfall,” “The Aviator” and “Gladiator” who is making his directorial debut on the film.

This year, Netflix is hoping to make a splash in the limited series Emmy categories by appealing to current true crime-based entertainment consumption habits. Its “Inventing Anna” (created and produced by Shonda Rhimes) is a nine-part dramatization of the story of Anna Sorokin, who, using the surname Delvey, conned numerous rich New Yorkers into believing she was an heiress in temporary need of financial support. Recently, Variety’s Jenelle Riley moderated a virtual 2022 Emmys FYC panel consisting of half a dozen of the show’s cast members: Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox, Alexis Floyd, Julia Garner, Katie Lowes and Arian Moayed. ‘They/Them’: John Logan’s Blumhouse Horror Film Starring Kevin Bacon Heading To Peacock – First Look
Peacock today unveiled They/Them, a new Blumhouse pic starring Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill), Anna Chlumsky (Inventing Anna), Carrie Preston (Claws), Theo Germaine (4400), Austin Crute (Call Your Mother), Monique Kim (What/If), Anna Lore (All American), Cooper Koch (Power Book II: Ghost) and Darwin del Fabro (Dangerous Liaisons), which will debut on the streamer on August 5th.
The Lgbtqia+ slasher, formerly known as Whistler Camp, marks the directorial debut of three-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan (Skyfall). It’s a queer empowerment story set at a gay conversion camp that follows camp director Owen Whistler (Bacon), who is joined by several queer and trans campers for a week of programming intended to “help them find a new sense of freedom.” As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. And when a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous.

A new horror film about the terrors of conversion therapy is coming to Peacock. “They/Them,” a horror film produced by venerable production studio Blumhouse and starring Kevin Bacon, will be hitting the streamer Aug. 5.
Bacon stars in the film as Owen Whistler, the director of a conversion therapy camp named Whistler Camp, which attempts to “turn” LGBTQ+ teenagers straight and cisgender. Set over a week-long session at the camp, the film focuses on the various campers, led by trans and nonbinary Jordan (Theo Germaine), as they undergo psychological torment from the camp’s programming. When an unidentified killer begins claiming victims, the kids must team up to protect each other, both from the killer and from the camp staff.

Anna Chlumsky has one of the most unique positions in the Netflix limited series “Inventing Anna.” The six-time Emmy nominee plays Vivian Kent, a reporter loosely based on Jessica Pressler, who broke the story of notorious Soho scammer Anna Delvey. As the actress points out in an exclusive new webchat with Gold Derby, “We wanted to allow the freedom to produce and to see this story unfold through a fictional lens, so that was entrusted to me and I appreciated that so much.” Watch the video interview above.
Chlumsky felt that she was in safe hands with Shonda Rhimes, who created and produced the series. “She loves writing for humans, and that’s why it felt like a really wonderful well-worn glove to just be able to have those words,” the actress explains. “She chose those words on purpose, and so, then, if I had a question, she’d thought about it.

Anna Chlumsky, in her first major TV role since “Veep,” is one of the stars of the smash hit Netflix series “Inventing Anna.” The actress plays Vivian Kent, loosely adapted from the journalist Jessica Pressler, who wrote the high-profile story about scam artist Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey. While Julia Garner‘s performance as Sorokin has received a great deal of attention due to her unique accent, Chlumsky is the one at the heart of the Netflix limited series, with the story mostly being told from her perspective. The show gives Chlumsky the opportunity to show her range as an actress, and the Emmys might take notice.

“Inventing Anna” centers on the dynamic between the two women, as Kent conducts a series of interviews with Sorokin while the latter is imprisoned. Kent is almost like the Clarice Starling to Sorokin’s Dr.
