- 1986, Afghanistan. The Mujahideen announce the launch of a new air-defense system called Stinger, which could potentially end Soviet supremacy in the air. Commander of Intelligence, Major Okovalkov is assigned the mission of getting hold of this new weapon and to do this, he has to intercept a small caravan transporting, according to intelligence information, a couple of Stingers. However, as it turns out, the caravan is a large heavily guarded vehicle with a well-armed escort. Realising that the mission is doomed to fail before it has begun, Okovalkov decides to let the caravan pass and then return to his unit, but his plans are ruined when a young and inexperienced soldier suddenly opens fire. A fight ensues during which most of the Soviet squad is killed. With only seven survivors and no radio contact, Okovalkov's real ordeal begins when he is forced to march his injured men over 45 kilometres back to base.

Kostik is unaware that it was Balaban who committed a serious crime twenty years ago for which his brother, Kostik's father, was arrested. Balaban helped Kostik's father to escape over the border, but the latter had no other choice but to leave his wife and little son to their fate in the USSR. And now Balaban intends to make Odessa too hot for Kostik because he doesn't wish to share with him Maya, the woman he loves, who is developing a whirling romance with Kostik. Kostik's uncle pulls the plug on Kostik by forbidding him cardsharping in Odessa. Nevertheless, Kostik does not stop because he badly needs money and fake passports to leave the country with his mother for abroad where their divided family might reunite.
- Nine-year-old homeless Vanya witnesses a crime - he saw the face of one of the bank robbers. In order to protect the valuable witness, Detective Varvara Rodionova takes Vanya to live in her aunt's house. However, Varvara is unaware that the boy picked up a flash drive that one of the robbers had dropped at the scene of the crime. The robbers waste no time in engaging a man whose mission is to cause Varvara to fall in love with him and trick the valuable flash drive out of the boy.

In addition, he has a skeleton in the closet - the reason for his return to the police after an enforced resignation is the death of his sister whom he loved dearly. Her death was recorded as resulting from an ordinary robbery, a crime which had never been disclosed, but Makarov is sure this was a premeditated murder. This time he is determined to find his sister's killer.

- Maksim, a young and promising ethnographer and postgraduate student, arrives in the village of Rusalino to collect old folklore songs, tales and traditions for his papers in 1993. It was Liuba, a student of the same college, who persuaded him to come to this village, because her aunt, Varvara, lives in Rusalino and the area is famous for having preserved many old songs and rites. The girl believes sincerely that their scientific journey will help them get closer, because she is incredibly in love with Maxim. Liuba does not even suspect that here, in Rusalino, Maksim will meet Rada, a Gypsy girl, who will steal his heart for the rest of his life.
- A group of operational workers of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department headed by investigator Alla Shatrova specializes in investigating "dead cases" - crimes that for various reasons have not been disclosed by the police for many years. Every time new facts appear, new witnesses, Alla Shatrova and her colleagues use every opportunity to reproduce and analyze the events of the crimes committed many years ago. The investigation team works out old and new versions, bit by bit restores the course of events, goes to the suspects and forces them under the weight of evidence to commit a confession.
- In the spring of 1982 as Brezhnev's power was waning, Yuri Andropov decides to tackle corruption and apathy in the Soviet Union. A number of company directors were targeted, but Andropov's first aim was to arrest Berkutov, director of the country's First Yeliseyev Grocery Store, who, it was believed, had been supplying faulty goods to influential government officials for many years. With Brezhnev's rule almost at an end and Andropov tipped to replace him, Colonel Skachko, Head of the Investigation Department approaches some of Berkutov's inner circle, starting with his assistant Zoya Platonova. During the 'cultivation' of Zoya Platonova, an interesting fact is established - her son, Anton had had an affair with Skachko's wife, Masha, who had given Anton a book forbidden by the regime. To save Masha, Skachko has no alternative but to release Anton and give up his interrogation of Zoya Platonova. Berkutov is soon arrested and questioned by Skachko, who takes an instant liking to him. Being a war veteran, Berkutov has become a 'hostage' of the state system, having been ordered to get rid of surplus goods, which he distributed among the power-holding structures without making any profit for himself. He had even bought his second-hand Mercedes with money that he had earned honestly. Skachko realizes that Berkutov is not guilty but is nevertheless going to be made a scapegoat, as the machinery of justice has already been started. After Brezhnev's death events spiral out of control as Andropov, needing to set a strong example, demonstrates an increasingly tough line against corruption. Berkutov is tried and executed, and after his death, his carefully kept accounts are filed away in the archives.
- Turning his hand to a bit of 'serious business', Goshka, a swindler and small-time crook, steals a priceless violin only to have it stolen from him by another thief a few days later. Vera, the associate investigator working in the Prosecutor's Office under Colonel Guzin, is assigned to the case, however, she is fired almost immediately after an argument with her boss. Although Gosha no longer has the violin, he is still the main suspect and, realizing he must come clean, he goes to Vera's flat to give himself up and to offer his help with the investigation. A delightful friendship and collaboration begins between the robbed thief and the former investigator, hell-bent on avenging herself on her former boss. The pair go on to handle many other cases - some dangerous and some downright hilarious but all with astonishingly successful results.

- Nothing holds Assia Demidova to her native village anymore: her mother, the last person who was dear to her, has recently died, leaving Assia completely alone. Their first encounter begins with a serious argument, but over time romance enters their relationship, culminating with a wedding. Alas, their happiness does not last long. A few years later, the car in which Assia, Artiom and their little daughter, Nadia are driving is attacked. Artiom is killed, while Nadia disappears without trace. Now Assia must find her daughter at any cost.

- Kirill Makarov has just graduated from university with a degree in architecture. His life is full of pleasure, and it appears that his dreams and ambitions have at last been realised. But will he want to return to his previous life, and will he be able to cope when faced with disappointment and unfulfilled ambition once more?

Lena starts to think that she is going crazy, and when she has a nervous breakdown, Sergey calls a psychiatrist who confirms that the poor woman is on the verge of madness due to all the stress she has been through. One morning Lena awakes to the smell of smoke only to see that the bath house in her yard has burnt down. Furthermore her husband's dead body is found inside. Accused of Sergey's murder, and with all the evidence pointing to her guilt, Lena finds herself in prison. But she is the only person to know the truth: she was framed, she did not kill her husband. Now she faces the daunting prospect of having to convince the court, not to mention her family and friends, of her innocence at all costs.
