Where We Belong
Beli is a young man whose tribe lives in the Nzulezo Stilt village in Ghana, a popular tourist destination. Legend says they were led there by their snail god to escape war over 600 years ago. They remain there because they were told by their god - that is where they belong, that is where they will be safe and prosper. That land is their heritage.
But Beli feels differently. He wants to leave the village to pursue education, a career and life in the city. He believes here is no future there for young people. So he finds himself in conflict with both himself and his world.
WHERE WE BELONG is the story about Beli's fight for the right to redefine himself and find his place in the world. We track the story through his eyes as he struggles through his own indecision and against the many voices trying to dictate his future. Beli learns that pursuing his dreams doesn't make him a traitor to his heritage, and that sacrificing his dreams doesn't necessarily make him a hero to his people.
We want to make this film because we believe, as global citizens and as Africans who understand what it means to have a connection with the land. In a world of migration and cross-pollination, the story asks two pivotal questions that affect us all:
How do we maintain our heritage in a changing world and can we live away from our land of origin and still maintain our heritage?
