The Menu (2022)
Unique and Engaging
This was a nice surprise of a movie that I hadn't heard anything about before watching. You know with Fiennes and Taylor-Joy involved the acting is going to be strong, and it was, but it was the premise that was the real standout in this film. A bunch of pretentious and entitled a**holes set out for a extravagant and exclusive 5 star dinner. Slowly at first, the chef mocks them with a couple courses, until his plans for a much more sinister evening begin to unfold. I'd describe it as a slow moving film with just enough shock mixed in to keep the film engaging throughout... The type of movie you can't make for the theater anymore, but plays great as an evening watch at home.
Recommended.
Wednesday (2022)
Great Addams Family Vibe
This is a very well done show with great acting and perfectly morbid undertones. Ortega nails it as Wednesday from start to finish and really carries the show... brilliant, talented and dark! The sutures on Thing's hand were a nice touch, and it was good to see a few of the other characters get an introduction, including Lurch and Fester. No Itt or Grandmama yet, but most at least had an appearance.
The only real gripe I have is the casting of Gomez. Gomez is supposed to be a sword fighting, lion wrestling, non-stop energy force of nature, and they cast a morbidly obese actor for the role. He's a fine actor but just all wrong for Gomez Addams. He's only in a couple scenes in a couple episodes, so it doesn't really matter, but that was a huge miss. Pugsley and Morticia were perfect though, and Fester was fine.
Other than that, it's fantastic... I hope they pull an Emily in Paris and just announce a multiple season extension on this gem while the actors are still the right age... 3 more seasons would be amazing. Highly recommend!!
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Finally some solid canon done right
The Mandalorian and Boba Fett are two fantastic examples of where Star Wars can and should go... Kudos! Keep this stuff coming! Nuff said.....................
Dark Matter (2015)
Great Sci-Fi Space Odyssey
If you like this genre and are looking for something new to watch, you will love this show. It doesn't get proper closure, but it's great while it lasts.
No Time to Die (2021)
Disappointing
The movie itself was a great example of a traditional Bond movie. Stylish and action packed with beautiful women, fast cars, and cool gadgets which is why it gets 5 stars. It loses 5 stars because of how it ends however. I didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to end a James Bond movie by killing James Bond... but they did! Ridiculous. I guess nothing is sacred anymore. What's the plan from here? Have Matilda take the mantle of Bond only to discover she's actually a Russian sleeper agent?
This one goes down with You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (which is alluded to multiple times throughout the film) as a major misstep in the franchise. Fire whoever thought this was a good idea and move on.
Val (2021)
Personal and Moving
This was a very intimate look at the well documented life of one of the most iconic actors of the 80s and 90s. It's sad to see him looking like a shell of the Val Kilmer we all picture in our head, but inspiring to see he doesn't let it keep him down. It's a story of success and failure, happiness and sadness... A story everyone can relate to in some way or another, but about a man who has lived a life more interesting than most. It's worth a watch for sure.
The New Legends of Monkey (2018)
Monkey is Hilarious
There's no way this should be rated a 6.5, this is an excellent piece of comedic and adventurous fun. Easy 8 but I rounded up because people with poor tastes and/or attention spans keep dumbing down what passes for entertainment, and now we've ended up with 15 versions of CSI. This is not CSI people, if that's what you're looking for there's probably one on right now!
For the rest of us, keep these Monkey seasons coming please!
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Fantastic series
I don't think I've ever been that engaged watching something that moves so slowly. I'm not sure what it is exactly, it's hard to put a finger on what makes this so captivating, but all aspects of the show were exceptional. Great acting, writing, plot development. Just a truly great work of storytelling. Highly recommend.
Saving Jaws (2019)
So Important
This show was both truly inspiring and deeply depressing. It shines a light on our generation's equivalent of the last generation's horrific whaling practices, and should be required viewing in schools throughout the world. The longer it takes societies to quit doing absurdly stupid things and wasting egregious amounts of natural resources, the more detrimental it's going to be for every generation after us. Killing sharks for their fins is equivalent to killing an elephant for its tusks or killing a tiger for its tail... It's just horrifying. It's also encouraging to know that at least a few people are committing their lives to educating the ignorant and trying to invoke change.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Great Entertainment
This is one of Netflix's best shows of the last few years. It's dark but not too dark, and the settings are visually stunning. The lead actress is amazing and carries the show, but the supporting cast and story writing is also strong throughout, so it's a very complete effort. I'd highly recommend this to almost anyone and hopefully they keep it going a few more years.
The Witcher (2019)
Painfully Slow
There must be some kind of inside joke or something I'm not getting, because there is no way this is a 9/10 show.
It is ridiculously slow, like to the point where 40 minutes into the show it feels like hours have gone by. If you can get through 3 episodes of this then you have more patience than I do.
Also, I think it's in black and white, but the production quality is so far below Netflix's standard it's legitimately hard to tell.
Enjoy!
Ruining History (2017)
Hilarious
I just found this on Hulu today and watched them all consecutively. I had never heard of this before but it was definitely worth the watch. Funny, witty, and original.
The Boys (2019)
Unique and Dark
This is a good show. It started out pretty intense and then it slows down a little in the middle episodes, but it was a very entertaining season 1 for sure. I personally don't think it's quite as dark as Watchmen (which I think is one of the all time great movies), and it has a lot more moments of levity, but it's definitely in that same vein. Amazon can do a lot with this series and I hope they keep it going for a while.
Jessica Jones (2015)
Excellent 1st Season
The first season of this show is on par with some of the greatest shows of all time, it was so unique and completely unapologetically brash. Season 2 started out promising but sort of lost it's charm as it progressed, and season 3 inexplicably went in a completely different direction and left me wishing they hadn't made it.
It gets 7 stars because of how good the 1st season was, but it does peak there.
Daredevil (2015)
Everything a Great Show Should Be
This is the standard that all epic and high budget television should be judged against. Season 1 was great, but season 2 is just next level amazing, the Punisher was cast perfectly and that prison fight season... whoa. Season 3 was a little disappointing if only because it took sort of a strange turn and Bullseye never really got a chance to shine, but all in all, this is one of the greatest series of all time. I just wish they would have made one more season to fully realize all of its potential.
The Order (2019)
Not Netflix's Usual Quality at All
This is not well acted, but it's the writing that really stands out as horrible. I couldn't get through the first episode because every conversation, situation, and coincidence, made absolutely no sense. They didn't even try to hide or explain it away either, they just completely ignore everything like the premises are perfectly coherent. All around a really poor show, at least through the first 50 minutes... Maybe it gets better, but I have no reason to find out.
Quick Draw (2013)
Funny and Original
This was an unexpectedly good show, it's too bad it only lasted a couple seasons, if it would've been produced today I'd bet it would've gone much longer. It's a western comedy, kind of along the lines of a Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't go that overboard and revolves more around the day to day lives of the townspeople. The sheriff (John Lehr) absolutely carries the shows and there are laugh out loud moments and situations throughout most episodes, mostly based around just how different the people and norms were back in that time. If you're looking for something new to watch and you're in the mood for a less than wholesome (not appropriate for children), unique style comedy, I'd give this one a chance for sure.
Future Man (2017)
Underrated Series
This is a fantastic show. It's a little raunchy and a little vulgar, and it definitely doesn't take itself very seriously, but it's well written, well acted, and the production quality was much better than I expected. I laughed when Wolf said he was hit about 3 minutes into the first episode, so you'll know really early on if it's your type of humor or not, but if you can't find anything to watch and you have Hulu, I'd definitely recommend giving it a go.
