College (2008)
Funny Raunchy and Surprisingly Good
I caught a screening of this movie. I had no idea what the hell this movie was going in but it was one crazy-ass flick. At the beginning I thought it was going to be a knock-off of Superbad or American Pie but I liked this movie way better (never thought I'd write that!). It was more Animal House/Porky's/Revenge of the Nerds. A kid (Drake Bell - kinda hot in a nerdy way and you see him naked as an added bonus) goes to check out his future College and gets into the usual college mishaps. This movie was kinda raunchy and was way racier than Superbad....and way funnier. The heavy set buddy, Carter, is friggin' hilarious. He's John Belushi, John Candy and Artie Lange all rolled into one. Kevin Covais was a good comic foil (pecker face scene was great). He gets abused pretty good. Hot guys, hot girls, kinky parties and chicks making out. What more can one ask?
The Year of Getting to Know Us (2008)
Very Good Film. Vintage Sharon Stone
I saw this at Sundance earlier in the year. I didn't know anything about it going into the festival and it blew me away. Sharon Stone was terrific. I'm not a huge fan of hers, but the scenes of her and her son when he was a boy were terrific. Tom Arnold was also great as her car sales/womanizing husband. Jimmy Fallon was oddly serious throughout the film. I was hoping he'd crack a jock every once in a while, but he was supposed to play is straight and he was good. Lucy Liu was also good as his girlfriend. The movie was a thoughtful/funny meditation on the father/son/family dynamic...of loss, love and regrets. Surprisingly good film.
An American Haunting (2005)
deeply psychological
This film clearly operates on a deeply psychological level, if not a metaphysical one. In my opinion, one's ability/willingness to accept this, with all its accompanying mysteries, is the key to understanding and appreciating this film. The director had a vision--and this vision came through in such an efficient manner that the final creation was not a movie, but rather, an experience: an experience which comes together on every conceivable level, from the acting to the musical score, that leads the viewer through a first-hand perspective of what each character is seeing and experiencing on an emotional level, with the revelations that force their way onto the air evoking the same reaction from the viewer as the fictional characters on the screen.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
elements of adventure
these elements of adventure: Nazi's, treasure, exotic locations, our generations kind of Count of Monte CristoWhat Dumas's novel was to nineteenth century readers, especially teens and children at the time, is what Indiana Jones is to contemporary movie lovers. I know the two story lines do not parallel each other that specifically, but the feeling in both, the great adventure with good and evil and money and relics and danger and women and secret identities and exotic locations
.All of those things are in both movies. They both get that child in you who believes in being a hero to come out, to dream a little. We should all watch this movie at different epochs in our lives to see if it makes us feel the same thing
