An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
Most who dislike this film don't get it or want to...
I am 54. Italian American, just like Mayo, Richard Gere's character. Very much with the bravado act (half of it real, half of it an act) at 20 years old. Don't show weakness, don't get too close. You only have yourself to depend on.
What a load of nonsense. There are lots of people to depend on if you let them in.
The REAL BRAVERY in this move, or at least the most bravery, is shown by Deborah Winger's character.
Staying away from someone you are desperately in love with is SO MUCH HARDER than ANY training Anywhere for Anything.
I know. I've had to do both several times.
Not running to that person and saying and doing anything just to KEEP THEM WITH YOU ONE MORE DAY...is the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
And like the mom says, when you give in, God Help You after that...and I have also given in a few times.
Winger's character, by staying away and staying strong, gave Mayo the choice of either truly loving her and being in love with her and respecting her....or walking away for good..using her was taken out of the equation BY HER.
THAT IS TRUE FEMINISM.
THAT is TRUE CHARACTER and INTEGRITY....fighting off the instant gratification of one more night with someone you are in love with....staying away for the bigger picture, whether he comes back to her or not.
CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, SELF RESPECT...they meant something once.
Now the WOKE crowd will just cry about how this group or that group are displayed in the movie instead of taking a VERY GOOD LIFE LESSON FROM IT.
BTW, I was NOT OFFENDED AT ALL by the use of the term "WOP" multiple times. It is a derogatory term for Italian Americans.
Sure, it would be NON WOKE to use today.
I have real problems in life. That word in a movie isn't one of them.
Great movie. Great message.
What wall do you need help getting over that someone you know might be of assistance to?
Take the help. Climb the wall.
Godforsaken (2019)
WHAT A DISTORTED CHRISTIAN VIEW BY THE POMPOUS SELF RIGHTEOUS DIRECTOR
I'm a Christian. This is the most JUDGEMENTAL and CRUEL and WRONG interpretation of Christianity that I have EVER SEEN. I wonder if this "director", who MUST be as close to God as one can get since she knows almost EVERY SIN THER IS and they ALL SEND YOU TO HELL...I wonder if this director is a PERFECT human being, because only someone thought themselves as PERFECT could make such garbage. Hey Olivia, are you UNDERWEIGHT?? Do you know that's a sin too? Not only fat people go to hell, which APPALLINGLY HAPPENS IN YOUR MOVIE. Because God doesn't understand Emotional Eating or Binge Eating Disorder or the STRESS that can cause eating or the DOPAMINE and other drugs that DRIVE YOU to eat through evolution. GOD MADE those chemicals that push you so hard to eat. Maybe God should be in hell? You are a DISGRACE to Christians everywhere. Overdosed drug addict? HELL. Gang member? HELL Like sex? HELL Seems like EVERYTHING equals HELL in this movie.
The only HELL is having to watch it.
Don't.
Sympathy (2007)
Good for insecure women and that's about it.
It's a jumbled mess of bad ideas and bad actors.
"female empowerment is how one fruitcake Variety reviewer called it.
I, as an Italian American male, have NEVER need to call myself empowered, I have not needed to see someone who is an Italian American male like me be a hero or antihero in a movie to get my "empowerment"
I know what I am. And that's good enough.
I feel bad for all the groups that need "empowerment" through movies.
Cause no matter what you say....it ain't real life.
In real life, the people who don't know or don't need the word "empowered" are the real ones with power.
Ciao.
On-Site (2019)
Three good actors and a pretty tense atmosphere...
With a twist along the way that I'm surprised a director had the courage to use. What with pollical correctness being a state sanctioned religion now :)
I was never bored. If a movie has good actors, I can live with a not perfect script.
Maybe this was 6 1/2 stars.
Compared to SO MANY horror movies I have seen lately, especially found footage ones, this was an 11/10.
The main actor/actress in the story seems like a good enough person with a likeable enough personality and a pretty stable mental state.
I won't say whether that lasts or not but you'll find out on your own anyway.
Life happens to us all, no matter what our differences and no matter how different we are, our blood is red, our pain is real and our hopes and dreams are what keep us going.
No matter what or who you are. That's a constant in life. I think that's an important point that is brought out in this movie even though it is a horror movie. There is nothing wrong with making a statement about human beings in general.
All the actors seemed real, and that's not easy to say these days with some of the movies I have seen. Usually some guy or gal with a camera and a bunch of drunk friends who decide they want to make a movie...that's not acting.
These folks are good at their craft and like I said before, that can make an average or even slightly below average movie good enough to watch.
But this movie was better than average.
It kept you wondering what was going to happen next and who would do what and why. We don't know a WHOLE LOT about their backgrounds so we can't say for certain what kind of people they all are...good or bad, fake or real...normal or not.....
I like that aspect of it.
I Live Alone (2021)
the character playing the aunt is such a HORRIBLE actress...
That I couldn't make it past the first 10 minutes.
It's like they found a bored, middle aged woman in a diner and asked her if she wanted to be in a movie.
The One You Feed (2020)
Complete Garbage
Complete garbage and nonsense that will be viewed by some (whether out of guilt or being WOKE) as an intellectual love film with a story to tell, simply because there is a gay love scene in it.
There's also a gay rape scene in it.
Maybe he really wanted it? That's the question that would be asked if it was a woman. He didn't. Neither do women.
I think that Russian politician was right...America has gone mad and it is trying to take the world with it.
Le calendrier (2021)
Have to really believe the worst of the human race...but it's a good movie :)
The poor main character unfortunately lives in the town/city/country with the HIGHEST per capita number of Needlessly Cruel humans anywhere :)
It's rare to find an adult tearing into a cripple in the most heartless and cruel way with the most heartless and cruel words.
In this movie, it's a pretty regular occurrence :)
Suspend belief in that part of the movie and you have a very intense and never boring (at least not to me) movie.
Did it feel long? Yes it did but not a bad long. I movie that could have been 20 minutes shorter and been a slim and probably better 84 minutes movie.
But it is what it is.
It's an Intelligent horror film. I'm a patriotic American but I wish we had more thoughtful horror movies with better scripts that aren't geared towards 12 to 14 year olds.
So enjoy. And NEVER, EVER buy an Advent Christmas Box :)
The Believer (2021)
Disjointed at BEST.
Just another in a series of horror movies made by directors that think it's ingenious to leave so many plot holes that we end up with a swiss cheese of a movie.
Is the couple really married? Were they ever?
How is the adult given "birth"?
Are the parents good/evil?
Is this some kind of Hell? Purgatory? Coming of the antiChrist?
Is the leading man Rosemary's baby born directly into adulthood?
And finally, after so many other questions, the last one is, by the end...who cares?
Error in Judgment (1999)
Really?? No, really??
Someone thought this horrific script was good enough to make into a movie??
It's laughable. Almost a parody that should be on SNL.
Lazy writing, silly, stretches and rips the boundaries of the imagination in its silliness.
NOTHING the main actress does makes sense. Not from a layman or therapist viewpoint.
If she is that naive at her job, and that BAD at reading people, she needs another profession :)
Save yourself 90 minutes. Water the lawn. Go for a pizza. Anything but watch this silliness.
Joe Montegna...he must have needed the $$ at the time. This is beneath him.
Enter the Dangerous Mind (2013)
Review from Someone With Mental Illness SPOILERS!!
SPOILERS!!
I'm Bi Polar II, Atypical Depression, OCD.
Those aren't the spoilers :)
I've been in a few psych wards when I felt a little too close to suicidal.
Thank God it's been over a dozen years since the last time and I'm doing ok.
But I did have reactions to some meds that made me hear music that wasn't real and have conversations that didn't happen.
I remember crying on the floor in the psych ward because my girlfriend had dumped me on the phone just then. Only she didn't. It wasn't real.
It stopped after they took me off that med!
And I met a LOT of Schizophrenics and Bi Polar folks and folks with hosts of other issues.
This movie reminds me of some of the stories fellow patients told me, nothing NEAR as drastic or horrific, with the damage to themselves being the worst damage they did.
One poor guy sliced his neck to pieces because a voice told him to. Thank God he survived. He was a good guy and you would never know he had issues when he is on his medication.
One guy did hide in his closet with a shotgun and that could have ended very badly since he thought he was being stalked. Thank God it didn't.
So this movie is the real deal and of course VERY, VERY RARE...but it's not fantasy nor complete fiction.
This movie made me thankful that I don't have extreme issues like this guy did.
But it also frightened me because it made me think...the times the meds did make me hear voices and music, it was pretty damn real and pretty damn terrifying at the time.
People giving this 1 or 2 stars are SO OFF BASE, heck they're not even on the field.
And they must no NO ONE intimately who has mental illness.
No, we are not monsters. Even those Very Few violent ones among us.
But yes, we are broken.
Medication is like glue that keeps puts us together after it's discovered we're broken. Therapy too.
Scary...no, not just scary.... horrifying is what I think this movie is. And I don't get horrified easily.
I knew after a few minutes that the friend was not real.
I NEVER saw the ending coming. When the roommate called her a
"freak", I should have realized.
Even at the end, when she was being so nasty in front of the therapist, I knew something was off but still didn't figure it out.
Then of course the last line or two gave it away.
That and the fact that she was not on the couch in the last image where she was supposed to be sitting!!! :)
Enjoy this movie, learn from it, get terrified and horrified because that is what we watch horror movies for.
I'm SURE all of your are smart enough to know that OF COURSE this is an extreme example of the illness, but...IT'S A MOVIE!!
Watching a movie about me taking pills every 8 hours while leading a relatively normal life would be pretty boring :)
And ignore the bad reviews. They are from people who likely have led charmed lives. I am glad for them. I would have the same negative reaction too if I had no idea about mental illness, I guess.
Fly on the Wall (2018)
We Will See The Lead Actor Again.
He did a very good job as the lead male character. The lead female character was very good as well, and the rest of the cast held their own.
Good plot and it kept my attention.
So are drones etc. a power for good or evil? I guess it depends on who's using it.
Trust me you'll enjoy it..
Muse (2019)
Why can't directors just make endings to movies anymore that make sense?
SEMI SPOILER ALERT!
Complete and utter waste of time because of the ending.
Director leaves you with 3 endings, depending on which one of the fantasy/dreams/hallucinations is real.
Too afraid to make a SINCERE ending, they make believe they are giving you something "intellectual" to think about and all they give is garbage.
Pass on this one. You'll thank me.
Imaginary Friend (2012)
Perhaps the WORST movie I have ever seen.
So you can film scenes where the supernatural HAD TO be involved, then at the end we are to understand there was nothing supernatural.
That a psychiatrist fell to pieces THAT QUICKLY and THAT EASILY, seeing blood that isn't there, seeing a woman who then disappears.
I MIGHT believe a person with psychosis could have these illusions. We are NEVER led to believe that the doctor had psychosis and it is LAUGHABLE that he would fall apart instead of figuring out the RIDICULOUS scheme his ex patient and his wife were pulling on him.
Oh and why did the lawyer and all of his books and papers disappear from his office? Did an attorney knowingly go along with the absurd scheme?
Even if he was away on vacation, i DOUBT he talk EVERY SINGLE BOOK AND FILE with him.
And the husband had a knife at the end and was basically 3 feet from two women, then we see the police show up and the husband is institutionalized for "a very long time".
Why? Both women are seen together at the end celebrating their scheme so what happened? Did he simply go mad and fall to his knees and the wife then called the cops?
The two women TOOK THAT CHANCE that he wouldn't stab what he thought at that point was a GHOST?!!?
And ON and ON and ON.
Lifetime...uh, yeah.
Bad Dose (2019)
Great idea for a movie. OK execution.
I loved the idea and it was a very good movie until the last 15 minutes, that weren't absurd, but contained the only boring 10 minutes of the movie.
I wish the writer had thought longer and harder about how to kill another 15 minutes to make it feature length rather than use boring conversation filler.
But there's a twist or two and compared to many "horror" movies I have watched lately, it's DEFINITELY worth the view.
