WALL·E (2008)
Not surprised to be surprised yet again.
"ROBOTS?! I mean, how lame is that? Pixar's definitely done it this time."
That was my initial reaction when I heard about WALL-E, and reasonably so. Yet, being the faithful Pixar fan I was, I waited eagerly for its release and didn't let the skepticism totally get to me.
So it was with a lot of anticipation after hearing endless good reviews, and also with a grain of doubt that I sat to see the movie. The first few minutes were spent marveling at the breathtaking animation which made the lifeless and trash-laden earth look so real that it had me squirming in my seat out of guilt.
Beginning in the early 22nd century, the movie is about how BuynLarge, a huge corporation, guides the entire human population into outer space via the'Axiom', while leaving the planet covered in waste & garbage. Fast forward to 700 years later, and we first meet the cutest robot on earth - quite literally, since he is the only thing left on the planet, save for a few roaches - "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" or WALL-E. Enter EVE, or Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, who, as the name suggests, is on the lookout for plant life outside the flagship. That's where the entire story actually takes off, though audiences aren't given the chance to get bored from the beginning of the movie.
Soon my attention shifted from going gaga over WALL-E's cuteness to enjoying the entire movie. From EVE's arrival to the journey to Axiom, from the Captain's first scene to the wonderful end, there was hardly a moment when the movie faltered. Animation - characteristically perfect. Story- Excellent. 'Acting' - Awesome. Rated G and family friendly. As for CF (or 'Cute' Factor),WALL-E's scooping away all the awards in that category hands down. What more can you ask for?
As always, the studio has outdone itself and made it almost impossible for moviegoers to declare just one Pixar animation masterpiece as their favorite. And, for some reason, I'm not surprised.
10/10 all the way
Can't wait for 'Up'!
Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
Another masterpiece subtly delivered...
Based on a new york-based dysfunctional Indian family, which includes Jennifer, a widow who lives with her less than pleasing mother-in-law Lajjo, two daughters Naina and Jia, of which the latter is adopted much to Lajjo's apprehension, and her disabled son. Kal Ho Naa Ho comes with the clichéd message of following your heart and doing what you want, for who knows whether tomorrow will be? It has been delivered in such a talented and compelling way that one is almost forcibly drawn into its "fresh" and gripping plot. Naina is a very serious, no-nonsense college student, with a womanizer Rohit and the all-nonsense Sweetu, whose sister helps run her mother's café, as her closest friends.Enter Aman,a happy-go-lucky man, as her irritating neighbor's nephew, who on noticing the impending gloom hanging over the family, makes it his mission to remove them from the darkness.Initially indifferent towards him, Aman's ability to turn their fortunes around by keeping her family happy, improving their business and helping her find a new meaning in life, Naina finally comes to face the fact that she is in love with Aman. As always, there's a glitch to the perfect ending, as Aman is unable to commit to a relationship due to health complications unknown to Naina and with Rohit finding his true love in the newly-transformed Naina. Despite being madly in love with her himself, Aman lies that he is already married and then focuses on getting Rohit and Naina together..The rest, you must watch to experience the fun yourself. KHNH is funny, touching, beautiful with a great cast, wonderful storyline and amazing soundtrack.IMO, this is Karan Johar at his best, in spite of the ironical fact that it was his protégé Nikhil Advani who made the magical transformation on to the silver screen. Kudos to both for the amazing effort and a heartfelt thank you for serving us one of Bollywoods best-ever movie..So what are you waiting for? Watch the movie as soon as you can, for who knows:Kal Ho Na Ho?
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Karan's Dream Debut..
While Kuch Kuch Hota Hai might now seem to be cheesy, considering the number of notable and less Bollywood-masala-type movies that have emerged since then, this movie has its own class and charm. The plot is basically simple - Two best 'friends'-cum-rivals, Rahul and tomboyish Anjali- enter Rani as Tina Malhotra, the London-based , modern, stunning, stylish, talented, polite (and many other desirable adjectives conveniently rolled into one)daughter of the college dean who manages to steal Rahul's heart (and vice versa, of course), around the same time Anjali discovers her newfound affection towards Rahul, who in turn is oblivious to her love. As expected, Rahul prefers Anjali only as his best friend and goes off, breaking Anjali's heart and marries Tina who eventually bears his child and dies at childbirth, requesting Rahul to honor Anjali's love by naming their daughter after her.Having known of her ill-fated disease beforehand, Tina addresses her daughter posthumously through a series of letters traditionally presented to the latter on each of her birthdays; in this way Anjali Jr. discovers her parents' past and the rest of the story revolves around her mischievous matchmaking et al. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is funny, touching, cute, charming, etc. in a variety of scenes(at times clichéd too, but not so according to those days' standards)The music is highly enjoyable with its title track being one of the most romantic songs in Hindi; the actors are great, though Rani Mukherjee has hardly much to do in her supporting role; direction is fantastic with Karan Johar being able to deliver a dream debut, making him one of the most sought-after filmmaker in Bollywood..This movie is a must-watch for all Bollywood fans and those interested in Indian cinema and i'll definitely vouch for that..
Arthur (1996)
Worth a 10!!
I was introduced to the series when i was in my childhood, somewhere in 1998 and i still love the show as much as i did then...my two older sisters were 11 and 14 and were themselves huge fans of the cartoon.adding to the list now is my younger sis who is now about 8.even though i'm a lot older now and both my older sisters are in college we all absolutely love the show!!the characters are simply cool, Buster being my favorite, and the jokes are really funny, innocent and clean..the cartoons are appropriate for any and every age and you don't have to feel awkward or bored or anything during the show.they are a 100% better than the crap we get from cartoon network and stuff...every time an episode gets over there is a big smile on my face(because i enjoyed it and not because it got over) and i'll be eagerly waiting for the next one...i assure you that i loved the show, i still love it and i'll certainly keep loving it....
