In Like Flynn (2018)
A Unique Perspective of a Hollywood Star
During the Golden Age of Hollywood, actor Errol Flynn received worldwide fame. However, many people don't know about the early years of Flynn's life prior to his stardom. In the film In Like Flynn, this unique perspective of this Hollywood star is brought to life. The film takes you first hand into the early years of Errol Flynn's life and illustrates all of the life experiences that lead up to his eventual fame. Film Director Russell Mulcahy does a remarkable job taking this 1930's story and making it relevant and digestible today. The film's cinematography was phenomenal and truly captivated the action-packed life of Flynn while also adding the humorous and charming components that made the story line and Flynn's character as natural and realistic as possible. Overall, I thought that In Like Flynn was a wonderful film and would surely suggest seeing it if you haven't gotten the chance to yet!
Stockholm (2018)
The twisted complexity of the Stockholm syndrome
This impressive film was able to develop an exhilarating and humorous story out of a frightening hostage situation. Stockholm is based on a true story of a 1973 bank robbery/hostage crisis that occurred in Stockholm, Sweden. The film takes you inside the walls of this Swedish bank where an American ex-con Lars, played by the notable Ethan Hawke, held 3 hostages against their wills. As scary as this may be, Lars was utilizing the hostages as a means to an end and did not want to hurt them. Lars was as kind as a capturer could be and made the hostage setting as bearable as he could. As Lars' fun-loving side shined through, the hostages realized his intentions and began to sympathize for him despite the awful circumstances they were in. This twisted turn of events was portrayed wonderfully in the film and really kept me in awe at the edge of my seat.
Soul to Keep (2018)
Fun-loving and entertaining cast
If you enjoy creepy thrillers, I would recommend watching Soul to Keep. This film directed by David Allensworth brings you into the lives of a fun-loving friend group of college kids just trying to have a good time on vacation. They are heading into the wooded mountains and are staying at two of the friends' grandfather's farm home for a little weekend getaway. Excited to party and enjoy their time together, these kids are looking forward to a trip of a lifetime. However, they will soon find out that the home they are staying is full of negative energies and creepy supernatural spirits that will make them fear instead that this is their last trip of their lifetimes. Allensworth does a great job in creating an approachable group of characters with seemingly authentic chemistry, and thriller scenes that are scary realistic. Soul to Keep is a solid horror film that I would definitely recommend seeing!
Saint Judy (2018)
Inspiring Feel-Good Film
Saint Judy is a dramatic and realistic film paying tribute to the inspiring Los Angeles attorney Judith Wood. Wood's character is a loving mother and divorcee that lives with her young son in New Mexico. One day, Wood is presented with the opportunity to move to Los Angeles and work in a new job as an immigration lawyer, which she takes. Once situated in this job, Woods realizes that immigration law isn't quite what she anticipated, and the legal system seems to have its odds against her immigrant clientele. Despite the frustration, Wood is strong-willed and works harder than ever to get the justice her clients deserve. This feel-good movie left me moved, satisfied and inspired.
Life and Nothing More (2017)
A Moving Drama with Realistic Cinematography
Life and Nothing More was an immaculate production with realistic and captivating cinematography. Director Antonio Mendez Esparza does a wonderful job is painting a not so pretty picture of a North Florida family and the struggles they face every day. The story line consists of a single mother Regina who works long, difficult hours at a local restaurant to provide for her two children. Regina isn't always home and begins to find her teenage son Andrew getting into minor troubles with the law. To keep Andrew on the right path Regina uses her tough love and hopes he will learn from his mistakes. The character's imperfections and raw dialogue made for extremely realistic interactions and chemistries that helped successfully execute this powerful story. Life and Nothing More is a moving drama that I highly recommend seeing for yourself!
Darkness Visible (2019)
Crazy mysterious horror film!!
Neil Biswas' Darkness Visible is a suspenseful horror film with a fascinatingly intense story line that is worth the watch. Not only is the story line extremely well developed and captivating, but its shockingly depicted horror scenes make it an intense watch. The main character Ronnie who is a London-raised man in his 20's, must return to his hometown in India because his healthy mother is suddenly on the verge of dying completely out of the blue. When arriving in India, his mother appears to be possessed and suspiciously dies in a bloody fall out of a hospital window. With so much confusion, Ronnie tries to solve his mother's death but is confronted with supernatural visions and a series of other murders that reinstate that his mother's gory death was no accident. Ronnie continues to investigate these occurrences despite knowing that he has the same inevitable threat of death as well. If you like the idea of a horror film involving twisted mysteries, I'd highly recommend "Darkness Visible".
Nommer 37 (2018)
A well-captured modern twist on Hitchcock's Rear Window
Heart racing and suspenseful, Number 37 was everything I could hope for and more in a well-produced action film. Paying homage to Hitchcock's Rear Window, this film sets a similar scene of a wheelchair-bound man who witnesses a murder. However, Number 37 gives a modern South African twist on Hitchcock's classic with its enticing plot twists, criminal activity and a mistaken identity. The film's main character Randall is indebted to a dangerous loan shark who is impatiently waiting for his incoming payments. At a loss of where to accumulate his debts and in fear of his life, Randal finds himself desperate to get the money in any way he can. One day, looking out his window through his binoculars, he witnesses a murder go down in a neighbor's apartment and uses this to his advantage. Instead of involving the police, Randal schemes up a plan to anonymously blackmail the killers to try and get any money he can out of them. However, once this plan is put into fruition, it's harder than anticipated to secure his secret identity and insure the safety of his and his girlfriend's lives. This South African film is a highly intense narrative with a nail-biting story line that was certainly worth the watch.
