Wrong Turn (2003)
Wrong Turn, Didn't look wrong to me.
This is a movie that wears its influences on its sleeve. There is no doubting that "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" are the reasons that this film exists. Is that a bad thing? Well...no, it isn't.
If you're looking for a completely original movie with a deep plot and storyline that will shock you....then you might not dig this, but if you like fun horror with inbred cannibals, back country roads, woodland murders and gory death sequences, then you will probably like Wrong Turn.
Elisa Dushku is fair in her role, and it's cool to see a more vulnerable side to her, seeing that she usually plays the bad ass chick. Jeremy Sisto is likable, as usual, with his nice-guy, wise cracker role that he plays well.
If any movie, out of the long list of movies that are influenced by TCM and THHE, should be looked at with a smile and a nod that says.."yup, the person who came up with this is an unadulterated horror fan"..this is the one.
Not amazing, but some healthy horror-some fun.
Inhyeongsa (2004)
Not a Doll Masterpiece, but good none the less
Yong-ki Jeong's "Puppet Master only with scary parts" was the most recent Korean Horror flick I had the pleasure of watching. With the title of "Inhyeongsa" in Asia, this movie struck me immediately when I saw it reviewed online, with images that made me think of Puppet Master, Childs Play and other toy/doll based horror flicks in the past. But for some reason I didn't think.."Boy, this will be tacky", I imagined it would be creepy and fun. Toysome horror done well almost.
The movie starts slowly, but I like that, so it was fine. The score, almost like I found with Acacia, was beautiful and very much reminded me of classic horror scores of the past. I wont give much away, but the story was strong in this one, and I would highly recommend it to any fan of Asian HORROR. It isn't extreme, it isn't to be taken with utmost seriousness, but it is really good.
Death Tunnel (2005)
Do you like ghost stories? Then avoid this.....BIGTIME
Okay....so the concept of a movie set at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium sounds good on the surface, the idea of just seeing this structure, like seeing Danvers State Mental Asylum in "Session 9" is a terror inducing thought to begin with. So....let loose a horror movie to delve into the history of this place, and you should have a diamond of a ghost story.
I'll begin with the things I LIKED about "Death Tunnel"....
1) The idea 2) The setting 3).................uh This movie is a shell of embarrassment, it could have been excellent, and the beginning credits to the movie, with newspaper cuttings of the history of the place, alongside ghostly screams and such is a good start, but thats where it ends. The actresses and actors are some of the worst I've ever seen in my life, the dialogue is pathetic and the musical "score" if you can call it that, is like something out of a toilet.
I will urge anyone with any will to live to AVOID this movie like the "disease" that the concept deals with. It is truly a waste of 90 minutes, and in my case.....I will never get that time back.
The writers, Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth should be ashamed of themselves for this cinematic travesty, they had previously directed and produced what is supposed to be a stunning documentary on Waverly Hills (Spooked), so this is just a kick in the teeth to anyone who expected something factual, something haunting...Hell, even something worth £5.
