Father Soldier Son (2020)
You are gonna cry
I cried like a baby several times watching this documentary, it's heartbreaking just to watch it.
Dolor y gloria (2019)
Is life of "superstar" movie directors that boring?
I had highly opinion about successful movie directors, successful in terms of living a decent life with enough cash in the bank not to worry about money, but to create and experiment, but my guesstimates crushed into futile after having a deep sleep during this movie.
The movie plot reminded me diaries of Mr. Nabokov where he tells, as you well read, remembers, his wonderful childhood times. And I will agree with anybody who says that the childhood is the key to the adult life of ours, i.e., our successes and failures, our demons and angels.
But this movie is just boring. A director, the man who creates worlds out of thin air, can re-create characters with the help of people, music, scenario, light, CGI effects, the directors is the man who creates the past, who can create the future, etc., etc.
Might it be my opinion is utterly wrong about movie directors, so-called biased and moronic, but let me say, is that boring the inner life of directors?
Apollo 13 (1995)
Leaving the Earth is like going to Texas, for some of us
This shockingly intense drama about NASA and its enormously talented crew of > 1000 people are one of the best movies how the humankind took the revolution in science beyond the Earth, sure, before 13, but I think it's the culmination of it.
This movie will make you appreciate everything you are experiencing on the Earth but never paid enough attention to think, its endless(?) oxygen, warmness, Newton's law of universal gravitation, etc., etc., it's just amazing how people stressed the mind to make a step forward, to make a leap.
Don't have words to describe everything, one thing for sure - the movie will give you a light to research the topic in more deeper details, in more intimate details, and you will start to appreciate the science and people behind it.
Sad story is I watched the movie only today as momentum is important, don't miss your opportunities, and get interested in science.
Synonymes (2019)
It's worth your time, believe me
As we don't know how Yoav (main character's name) knew where the key in order to get into the empty flat with a lot of rooms, we certainly know he came from foreign country to pursue "the better life" in France. Empty flat is France.
Long story in short, you can skip the details, is that after the cold night in the bathroom, he will meet with his new neighbors, friends, Emile and Caroline. Allegorically speaking and obviously, Emile and Caroline is the image of current France, and that's the main plot of the movie, France's relationship problem with emigres.
Emile and Caroline pays nothing to live in a big beautiful flat, their general life pursue is to write novels and make music, to drink a good wine, listen to a good music, and do some business to keep things on. All of it came to them seamlessly.
On the other hand, take Yoav. He has no place to stay, no dress to wear, no idea to pursue, what to do? Just some stories to tell.
I am afraid to say, I hope am wrong, people seem to be missing this - the relationship of France with emigres, the problem of collision of cultures, I will quote even definition of the word emigres as how it is written in dictionaries: "a person who has left their own country in order to settle in another, typically for political reasons." That's it.
The movie is about the most challenging topic for current Europe (besides Brexit for sure) and any other "successful" country in terms of GDP you have heard before, Europe countries mostly, how to take the relationships with the emigres, you get it?
Yoav can be seen as an image of a citizen from any country where GDP isn't that high as in Europe countries, and that is not the problem if one wants to try to live a better life in better circumstances, but what the director is saying can be - you can take the citizen from his/her country indeed, but you can't get his/her country from his.
I can write a lot about this movie, it's a good movie, great characters, some plot for Joker sake you won't find nowadays in all of these useless hero movies, but... I bet you bought tickets to see Avengers, right?
Captain Marvel (2019)
Captain Not Be Bored
The trailer has received more than 50 million views (as of today) and this numbers are huge for any 2 minute content on YouTube, but to sorry to say - the movie is too boring to be able to stay awake during of it. Luckily, you'll find few good jokes from Nick Fury as ("appears without his signature eye patch") talking to the cat, and you also will find out how he had lost his left eye, yes(!), but that's all of it.
I can't say much about how successful was the acting part from Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, but one so sure is that she will kick ass to Tony Stark as she has ability to fly and destroy everything around her with a blink of an eye if Tony has to put some energy to do the same. Tony Stark is all about the costume, when Carol part is just the intention, the power within.
Captain Marvel is a next step for any Marvel movie in terms of CGI, 25 years younger Samuel L. Jackson, big super rockets, inter galactic flies to and fro, etc., etc., it is a movie with the best super affects as of today I believe, but...
The content, the narrative, the storytelling is the weak, add to this not memorable and out of touch characters, a bit(?)... nope, utterly lost line of telling the past events that happened to be occurred in Marvel universe, what makes all these super CGI effect are waste of money and... your time.
Ken Jeong: First Date (2019)
Why people disliked it so much?
So much haters out there, you know? This comedy special was really special, might be some jokes were old, and the idea of "I'm super rich now, go and sick my *ick" attitude were taken literally by some people here, this is highly recommended to watch.
It's not stand-up comedy as it says, more of "memories" night with one of semi-successful asian actor who happened to be the hard worker and creator of memorable characters to not care about the movie at his 40s, right?
The guy is super humble, and I respect him for what he went through with his wife and changed his life when he became an actor but stayed with the same values. Semi-biographical stand-up comedy show held not at the theater, but at the club. Chow is a great storyteller.
Highly recommended to watch!
Senna (2010)
Documentary "Senna" is a life-changing experience
As a kid from drivers family, I think it is in my blood to drive (I don't have the license though), I always liked the notion and idea of driving: take the vehicle and reach the point. If it is Formula One: add time-factor and speed and politics and everything else.
Cars changed the world, created new economies, may be added some "fuel" to climate change, etc. etc., but there is the other side of the coin -- driver as an idea.
You can make a list of people (all the people dead and alive) who drove a (any) vehicle at least for once, at least for a minute, and make a list of top drivers - who is going to be the first one? It is a question to be answered while watching this documentary.
Pink Floyd's Sorrow is playing on my laptop, and I'm writing these words to describe how important it is "to connect with something" from your childhood, to take seriously some endeavour from your childhood, as your childhood is the answer of your greatness.
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
Senna, rest in piece.
P.S. My two grandfathers were making a living by driving.
303 (2018)
Happy Valentine's day for everyone
I write this review from Yakutsk. In February, the average temperature here is 30-40C. In February, the World is celebrating Valentine's Day (VD), so the movie was a sort of journey into summer.
My wife invited me to celebrate VD and watch the movie, I not used to celebrate "stuff like that", but the sign of caring itself was 10/10, as the gesture was surprising and I felt enormous flow of happiness' hormones on my blood. I like to think so.
We ordered the tickets via online where it the website said that the movie will run in the original language (German) with subtitles in the Russian language, but it wasn't, that was stupid very raw translation with a lot of minor verbal grammar mistakes in it. Sad.
As you know, if you going to change the voice of characters, it's a huge risk to ruin the movie at all. it was a huge risk with huge failure.
It is a road movie genre, "Little Miss Sunshine", "Rain Man", Jarmusch's "Dead Man", what a great titles! But... This movie isn't like that... at all... whatsoever! I think it is because the translation was stupid...
Two persons met each other to across the Europe and fall in love. Along the way, they will discuss "capitalism VS. communism", "partnership VS. loneliness", "human being VS. gorillas", etc., etc.
They will have fun, certainly, will drunk good wine, see the views, the roads are excellent in Europe to judge by this movie, I have never been there, and gasoline is cheap I guess, just take the van in German and go to Portugal, right?
Searching for Sugar Man (2012)
Searching for the meaning of a poetry
A poetry... A poet... What's that?
If it sounds like ridiculously foolish question to ask yourself, you should ask yourself and take a look within. Who is the poet? What is the poetry? What is the meaning of "to be or not to be"?
You will find all answers while watching this spectacular narrative, how it is like to live within the true meaning of poet's soul, how it feels like to survive just to survive, sing to sing, take one word after another to put it close to each other just to put them close to each other, it is beyond anything to be a poet, it is because you are.
I created the account to write this review, not the best review, but the best documentary about poet and poetry. Imagine to put the music into this combination, and you'll get Sugar Man.
It is insanely sad story, might be closest to the reality as Sugar Man said "you can't beat". So now I'm listening to Cohen's music and I got the idea, finally, when poet will start to sing, you are close the reality.
