Seaspiracy (2021)
No documentary will bring about Utopia on earth
A film like this will not make me want to give up being a pescatarian. All human action to bring about a Utopiac world has failed because we are fallen, sinful beings.
Just a load of idealistic propaganda trying to scare people into giving up centuries of what they've always done.
There is only one being who will truly bring peace, harmony and perfection back to earth again - and he is not human.
Act Naturally (2011)
Naturally done and a nice story
It's a thoroughly enjoyable movie. If anybody is looking for an introduction into the naturist way of life, this gentle comedy is a great way of easing you into it.
The film begins when businessman Ned Tillerman is killed in a boating accident. He has two estranged daughters who are called by the management of his own nudist resort Bear Lake to pick up his belongings. Neither of them are aware of the fact that when they arrive at the resort that it is a nudist venue and their father had allocated the property for them to inherit upon his death. The adventures begin from there....
It's funny without being overly gratuitous or sexually exploitative, and focuses on the problems that nudists often have with being accepted by mainstream society, and non-nudists trying to understand what this lifestyle has to offer them.
Highly recommended for most people to watch.
Complex (2014)
Cute and charming film about nudism
Although only 25 minutes in length, this film is still cute and funny about the complexities of being a nudist in today's supposedly enlightened society.
The characters are representative of the modern young urban adults with their coming to grips with nudism, a lifestyle which at least in Australia is still very much the monopoly of the baby boomer generation, and the 'don't ask don't tell' secrecy which unfortunately still keeps nudism under wraps.
The acting is great and who knows if there could be a sequel to it in the future?
The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1986)
Brilliant cross between drama and black humour
I first saw this series in the 1980s and it was brilliant! Featuring a cast of well-known actors like Dennis Waterman, Malcolm Terris and Tom Baker, it is the story of how a flustered and frustrated accountant becomes bored with his overweight, unattractive and lazy wife to have an affair with a beautiful and talented novelist (Mary Fisher). Rather than take it on the chin, his wife changes her way of living to embark on a trail of destruction on Bobo's world in order to get him back into her life. Wallace is an amazing and credible actress, and it is a shame that she is not recognised more in the acting world. This film is both a satirical look at popular culture as well as a chilling lesson as to what consequences can erupt as a result of committing one of the worst sins of all: adultery. As the Bible clearly states "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned".
Dreams Come True (1984)
Not too bad, but hardly earth-shattering
I first saw this film in the late 80's when I hired it from Rainbow Video. In hindsight it's not too bad for what it essentially is: a B-grade fantasy romance flick. The story revolves around a young couple who meet at a go-kart race track and embark on a series of wacky and sometimes dangerous adventures when they are astral-traveling. It's mainly aimed at a teenage audience, although some might find the plot a bit difficult to understand especially when it tends to be overshadowed by sex scenes. Although hardly considered a classic, it's definitely more entertaining than some of the sanitized PC garbage that often gets served up as entertainment these days.
Educating Julie (1984)
Good, but not overly brilliant movie about nudism in the 1980s
There are not too many feature films made about nudism and naturism these days, but in its day this was hailed as one of the best. Looking at it today it does look rather dated with the hairstyles and the devices that they used (e.g. dial phones and typewriters). It's a very straightforward story: young sociology student Julie Potter is set a thesis to write for her masters, and she is tricked into doing it about 'Nudity in the 80's' to the scorn of her classmates. After her boyfriend offers to help her out with it, they both explore the world of nudism and how it works. The acting is good, but hardly that of an Academy Award standard. Julie is an initially shy and mousy person prior to doing the thesis and becoming a nudist changes her personality and outlook radically. For people who often criticise and stereotype nudists as being a bunch of cranky old pagan hippie swingers, this film does a lot to dispel those stereotypes as they are shown to be your everyday people who just like to bare it all in the sun on the weekends with no other motives. Unpretentious and unsensational in the main, it's one that naturist movie buffs rather than the general public will enjoy for the most part if only for the nostalgia value.
Diary of a Teenage Nudist (2004)
If you are expecting an exploitation film, forget it!
Bianca Badham is your typical British 18 year old girl of the 00s: fun loving, intelligent, gentle natured, open minded, and loves her music and surfing the Internet. But there is one thing that she does not share in common with most teenage girls: she was born and raised in a nudist club with her mother, step-father and sister. Upon leaving high school, she decides to spend a more interesting summer than most girls who hit the pubs and go out on the hunt for boyfriends: looking for naturists her own age. Her searches on the Internet open her up to a new generation of young nudists who are trying it for their own purposes: a Muslim architect student who closets it from his parents, a young guy who enjoys hiking in the woods naked and tries to cajole his unwilling fiancé into going naked with him, a nude bike ride through the streets of London, a teenage girl who actually got her boyfriend to try nudism first (unlike most relationships where it's usually the guy who is interested and the girlfriend who is reserved). In all it's a cute documentary that paints up the naturist movement in England and America, warts and all including a few questionable characters whom nudists and non-nudists don't want in their lives. But it's going to be a long long time till the masses will finally come around to the nudist's way of thinking about the body and this is a step in the right direction as a whole.
The Still Point (1986)
Sensitive film, but could have had a better ending.
A beautiful but rather dated film which came out of Australia during the mid-80's depicting the life of a social misfit: a teetotaler self loathing semi-deaf high school student called Sarah who takes a holiday with her mollycoddling parents and grandparents. She meets other people her age and tries to blend with the crowd, but her lack of social experience and self-esteem counts against her which a couple of them see as a weapon to use against her. The acting is good but the film has a very slow and unhurried pace, and it's only towards the end of the film where she finally tries to break free. Largely forgotten today, but is a prime example of teenage angst done from the view of an 80's kid. Watch it for 80's fashion and nostalgia value.
Point Break (1991)
Complete garbage
Only bored, unemployed testosterone fueled guys aged between 18 - 25 will bother to rent this movie. Nothing but mindless violence, and a waste of Keanu Reeves' acting abilities. About the only thing I liked was the soundtrack because of the song "So Long Cowboy" by long forgotten 80's synthesizer-rockabilly band Westworld. Glorifies the worst traits of masculinity, entirely predictable, and people getting mortally wounded every 10 minutes in it. Reeves is a very diverse and talented actor and I'm surprised that he would lend himself to doing a movie like this. If you're going to check it out just buy the soundtrack CD. Don't waste your money renting this crap.
Naked States (2000)
Everyone should pose for Spencer sometime!
This film was screened on SBS in Australia a few years ago, a country which had provided him with the largest turnout for his installation up to that time (in Melbourne). Spencer Tunick is indeed a talented photographer and a renaissance man in the sense that he is constantly helping people to re-assess the world and the way that they see themselves by posing nude in public. From the installation in Madison Square right through to the zig-zag line at Burning Man, this film is a joy to watch as people who are initially shy and frightened of posing for him morph into brash and confident individuals afterward. They've been there and done that and don't need to try and prove themselves to anyone anymore. I also manage Spencer's Yahoo! group which has some interesting discussions so you can share your insight on that too if you wish. He hasn't come to my town yet, but I will be one of the first to pose for him if/when he decides to.
The Little Feller (1982)
Great Brisbane film
Brisbane is generally not known for being a major player in the movie industry, least of all the Australian movie industry. However, I remember seeing this film in 1986 and it had a deep impact on me because it dealt with a very sensitive and heart-rending issue going on right in my town. The acting is brilliant and the characters are believable: the hard working husband, his long suffering wife and mischievous son Stevie. In some ways this movie predated "Fatal Attraction" by five years to the extent that some psychopathic people will go to to get who they want, even if it means hurting members of their family in the process. Sadly, this movie has not been released onto DVD and in an age where you can see virtually any movie you want via checking on the internet it's high time it was.
