Bandish Bandits (2020)
Amazon responds to Netflix
For the first time, ever since Netflix started dominating Indian market with Indian content starting with Sacred Games , Amazon seems to have responded. And responded well - leaving its stupor behind by bringing in a common theme - romance and mixing it with conflict of traditional and modern. Backdrop of Rajasthan adds to visual delight. Good performances all around . Season 1 hits the spot and 10 points to Amazon for rising to the challenge.
Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)
Why you must watch it
One reason is it brings us face to face with a few historical facts that most of us Indians have forgotten. Like what life may have been under British rule, how few people sold their citizens to enjoy the riches and some chose to fight against all odds when compromise was an easy way out. The personal price paid by these zealots was immense - the least we can do is try to listen to their story.
I am not a fan of period dramas and the film could have avoided about 15 mins of reels particularly in first half by shortening / removing certain parts - lion kill (shorten), child birth (remove), king coughing before dying ( shorten) , post milk drinking song - remove etc.
Great way to end the story. Movie makes up for any of the above flaws through excellent sets, great costumes and honest dialogue delivery . Great movie.
Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)
You need to watch this
I usually watch Hollywood with random Hindi movies picked up for viewing. Giving Bollywood's penchant for hyperbole and the assumption of non intelligent viewer, our movies rub a point to make it. So with great trepidation, I agreed to watch it on opening weekend . I was amazed with sensible and balanced treatment to a very complex topic. Nuances of personal loss, enemy preparedness , not having all solutions conveniently, limitations of technology and information , patriotism were well handled. Can it be subtler - yes it can be understated further in areas but it's a delightful departure in our treatment of our armed forces operations. Well done !
