The Irrational (2023)
Disappointing show
I so wanted to like this show! Jesse Martin is a wonderful actor and this type of show, where crime is solved using unusual methods, are fun to watch. Unfortunately, the writing on this show falls flat. The stories are far fetched, the cases are shoe-horned into the "science" and the cast around Martin just does not work well around him. This show is a copy of Lie To Me with every possible cliche thrown at you in the first couple of episodes and every possible corner cut to make the crime solvable in under 50 minutes while still exploring the bigger story arch or Martin's character trying to figure out who caused the bombing where he was burned.
Spy (2015)
Funny movie worth a watch
I had such low expectations for this movie but it surprised the heck out of me. It's funny, entertaining, with good action sequences and just enjoyable. The story seems to be a little predictable and then it surprises you with a new twist. The characters are silly and a bit exaggerated but they are never ridiculous or over the top and it's great to be able to laugh without getting a lesson in social justice. Lastly, Jason Statham should do more comedy and Melissa McCarthy should do more action movies. Both were great in this movie and they make a good team and I hope to see them do more movies together. Well worth a watch.
A Christmas Open House (2022)
Just awful
I love cheesy Christmas movies - they're predictable, corny, poorly written, portly acted, yet thoroughly enjoyable. This movie is indeed poorly written, corny and the acting is atrocious, but there is nothing enjoyable about it. It feels more like an infomercial for a DIY fix-it or decorating show and fail at both. Even the music is cringy and there is absolutely zero chemistry between the love interests in this movie plus the makers could have used a map because they even make the 45 minute distance between Atlanta and Rutledge seem like it spans 10000 miles and who the hell puts a house on the market on Christmas?
Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets (2023)
More of about IBLP than the Duggars.
This documentary went off the rails and lost track of the subject of the documentary and turned into a documentary about the IBLP. As someone who is fascinated by cults and how people are able to fall into these traps, I would have probably been interested in watching a docu-series about this cult but I think the way this was done is a little bit underhanded which shows a serious bias by the producers of the show. After a couple of episodes, the show does not even talk about the Duggars and just spends time telling you how awful IBLP was. Fine, no problem, but they also introduce people making fun of, and attacking fundamentalist Christians so you have to wonder what was the motivation behind the show.
Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies (2022)
The most unlikeable person...ever
I did not know much about this lady before watching this doc, and I have no idea if she killed her child or not, that's between her and God.
But, Casey Anthony is not at all believable in any way, shape or form. She comes a cross as selfish, out of touch with reality and as simply someone tone deaf who is just blaming others for her life choices. The saddest part of the series is that this woman is not at all concerned about the truth and is only worried about how she is perceived and is just washing her hands clean and Netflix is allowing her to do just that. I feel sorry for this family who has suffered an awful tragedy and has to now relive it all and take the blame for everything.
Like Father (2018)
Good movie
I'm a father of 2 girls and I've made my share of mistakes over the years but never stopped loving them, and never will. I can relate to Harry and his regrets and so this movie touched my heart in a big way. Yes, it has some plot holes and it is a giant commercial for Royal Caribbean, but it also has some very touching moments and some very good acting by the leads. It's worth the watch but don't let Netflix fool you - this is NOT a comedy.
B Positive (2020)
Is this supposed to be funny?
From the awful credits, to the leads, to the characters themselves - this show is a train wreck. It's seriously unfunny and I know it makes me an awful person, but the main character is so unfunny that after 2 episodes I'm done watching and hoping he does not get the transplant.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
What a waste of a movie
The first movie was actually good, and that's saying a lot for DC Comics movies. This one goes back to the the awfully loooong build up of an awfully bad plot of every single DC movie. I was ready to walk out 1 hour into this thing because there was no plot, no clear villain, no clear purpose and absolutely no reason for this movie to take place in 1984.
Tiny Pretty Things (2020)
Who makes this crap?
This is all the bad teenage drama shows rolled into one, with the added bonus that the people behind this think themselves as artists.
The plot is a retread, the acting is bad, the directing is awful (I mean, 2 minutes on someone doing their hair?), and the writing is basic.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Will Ferrell is just not funny...neither is this movie.
Other than his Janet Reno impression on SNL, Will Ferrell is just not funny but I really wanted to like this movie. The cast is pretty good and it had great potential but it is predictable and full or recycled Will Ferrell gags that are getting old. Rachel McAdams is beautiful and I found her believable as an Icelander (though in all fairness, I have no idea what an Icelandic accent may sound like) and her lip-syncing is almost at a Milli-Vanilli level. That and the Eurovision contestants making cameos keep the movie from getting 1 star.
Band vs Brand (2019)
Good content but cheaply made
I get documentaries don't have big budgets and sometimes film makers have to sacrifice some things so take this with a grain of salt. This is a decent documentary but it's hard to watch. The quality is ok, but the audio is poor most of time because it seem like they're were just using the camera mic, and that camera was an iPhone.
Also, the background music, when it's used, is awful. Again, music rights are expensive, I get that, but if you're making a documentary that revolves around music, use something decent or nothing at all.
Nobody's Fool (2018)
Not very good
Tiffany Haddish is the only highlight of this movie. The acting is bad, the story is predictable, and the production is film school quality.
Lost City Raiders (2008)
WTF?
James Brolin is a decent actor but he could not save this script.
I watched the first 10 minutes and could not torture myself any further. The script is corny, the direction is sophomoric and the plot is ridiculous "Cardinal, me saving the scepter is the only hope we have". Someone was smoking crack when they green lit this pic.
La 4ª Compañía (2016)
Decent film, does not make sense at times
This is a good film and I'd rate it higher if it made more sense.
There is a good story here, pretty good acting and good characters.
The problem is that at times the movie is hard to follow. Some things just don't make sense and they don't go too deep into the backgrounds of the characters so you don't know why they are who they are.
Thi Mai, rumbo a Vietnam (2017)
Sweet, funny and entertaining
It's not annover her top comedy but it has its funny moments. It's a sweet movie that tugs at your heartstrings and leaves you feeling good.
Roma (2018)
Really wanted to like it, but...
It's a really slow movie. There is not much of a plot, just a lot of things that happen that are tied together simply by the characters being around them - the awful school band marching down the street, earthquake, the forest fire, the weird dude singing while the fire burns, the rude young people at the movies, etc. None of the things that happen do anything to drive a plot or narrative but rather just seem to drag out the movie. Then there are the ridiculous things you see - all the pregnant women walking around in front of the hospital and several more just sitting in the acting room, yet Cleo gets to the front of the line without wait. The acting is pretty bad - with the exception of when Cleo gives birth, she has no emotions whatsoever. She's got the be the flattest, most one dimensional character not played by George Clooney.
Magnum P.I. (2018)
It's nothing like the original
I gave this reboot 3 shows because it took The McGuyver reboot a few shows to make get over the original. The thing is that McGuyver is not a copy of the original, yet Magnum tries to be, and fails miserably. Magnum is simply not Magnum. The voice overs are annoying whereas they were the backbone of the original. Rick and TC are unbelievable, and Higgins is extremely annoying and the idea of Magnum and Higgins hooking up (it will happen) just kills the vibe.
La casa de papel (2017)
Amazingly good show
This is truly one of the best shows I've ever seen. That may sound like hyperbole but it's not, it's really that good. Great story, compelling characters and outstanding acting.
I Love Miami (2006)
Complete disappointment
I was so excited when I came across this DVD at the video store because the plot sounded so good - Fidel Castro finding himself a refugee in Miami. Well, that is about where the entertainment stopped. The movie is bad...really, really bad. The acting is awful - with Alicia Machado being the worst. Ex-Menudo Johnny Lozada is somewhat believable as a gay man but the character is pointless. Even Jaime Camil, who is usually pretty good, was awful in this movie. The only likable character and actor is the little kid, even if he looks a little too much like Elian Gonzales. The Spanish dialog throughout the movie is bad because they do not even sound Cuban with Machado overdoing the accent and Camil not even attempting it. When they speak English it is even worst because the accents are just the awful stereo-typical portrait of a Hispanic immigrant . To make matters worst, there is really no story there. The movie is billed as a dark comedy but to be any type of comedy it would first have to be funny. Don't waste your time with this movie.
