Alpha Betas (2021)
Laugh Out Loud Funny
This pilot had me begging for more, filled with jokes fans could excite over but also a storyline anyone could enjoy and find humour in.
Sex Education (2019)
Another hook I'm caught on
Following in the steps of titles such as Orange Is The New Black and the reintroduction of Sabrina, Netflix have once stepped it up in another genre, this time Teenage Drama/Comedy.
To top it all off, it's British. There's something just so gritty and humerus about the British youth lifestyle that really grips me. I would akin this show to an older series, Skins, following the same style as we follow the everyday lives of each character in a fulfilling way, but with much more down to earth story telling.
My only issue was the American styled setting which didn't fit well with the landscapes outside of British villages and old classic school buildings, but I can see why it was used as the US styled high school is the typical and familiar backdrop to most of our favourite teenage movies/TV shows. That being said, it'd have been nice to see them add even a little bit of British high school feel into it, other than simply a swimming gala and getting away with smuggling a 2ltr bottle of drink into a school dance.
I did love the 80s feel to it all though, adding a little more colour and comedy in the overall effect, and I suppose that does fit well with the American theme more so than it would with a British one.
All in all, I'm not only glad to see a British based TV show, with actual British actors, really stand out on Netflix, but that it delivers information and comfort to young people going through the same struggles that seems too taboo to mention within our prudish society.
I hope the rest of the world sees the potential in it, as I can hardly wait to see more!
