Orphan Black: Community of Dreadful Fear and Hate (2015)
Worst episode of the show
This episode (3.7) was a tarnish on an otherwise great show. It is the only episode written by Shelly Smith, a consulting producer for season 3. The brain karate I had to perform to overlook the convoluted plot devices was exhausting. Having almost skipped it I can say it's still work watching Sarah, Helena, and Mr. S. Scenes, but even those could have been written better. It felt like the show only had nine episodes written and so someone had to write a fluff episode so they could have ten episodes.
The episode is mainly an Ashely episode that revolves around a contract signing, a drug deal and a campaign event. That's the first thing you have to ignore. Who would have scheduled those on the same day? Let alone a soccer mom.
Then we are led to believe that the drug dealer takes Donnie hostage because they had the wrong envelope. Most drug dealers aren't that sketchy. Maybe a drug cartel boss but even then, he would have taken Ashley hostage.
Next up Cosmia decides to show up to up to the campaign event where Ashley-her clone-is a candidate. Isn't Cosmia the smart one? If that wasn't bad enough, she ends up stumbling into a situation where she needs to impersonate Ashley. This would have been more believable if she wasn't wearing glass and didn't have dread locks hanging out of her knit cap. Are the folks in that city that inept?
While there were many more gaffs the worst one that completely takes you out of the story is Cosima's attempt at a campaign speech where she immediately resorts to speaking about being a Lesbian. Really? How does that make any sense? Then Ashley arrives to take over and when they swap out Ashley just proceeds to do her speech. So, everyone just forgot about what Cosima said? Ugh.
There were a few thing that redeemed this episode so I couldn't give a 1 star, but ultimately you could skip this episode and catch the details in the next episode's recap.
Dinner in America (2020)
Suburbia, Napoleon Dynamite, and Stranger Than Fiction walk into a punk show!
This was a pretty great movie. I would not have guessed that. 😉
Dinner in America merges genres seemlisly, creating something that is entertaining, heartwarming, thought provoking, funny, and dramatic. At its core its a coming of age romantic comedy, but with the energy of Fight Club. It doesn't take itself so seriously to come of pretentious, and has a genuine punk rock vibe.
Patty is such a sweet heart weirdo you can't help but fall in love with. Simon is angry and punk rock. He doesn't come across as one dimensionally though. His character has some depth.
I also love how uncomfortable Simon's presence in the suburbian landscape makes me feel. The relationship of Simon and Patty is just as uncomfortable. That dissonance resolves by the end of the movie.
If you saw the trailer or synopsis and you are on the fence about watching, stop reading reviews and just watch this movie. You'll have. Heck you might even cry!
Chaos Walking (2021)
Way bettar than SW 7-9, but not as epic as Dune.
Overall this is a really good film. I would recommend it to anyone with a love of Science Fiction.
This isn't like all the derivative eye candy that gets pushed out of Hollywood nowadays. The is a real sci-fi story. It takes an interesting idea and explores the consequences that would transpire if it were to come about. The plot ends up going in a different direction than you'd expect and Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland both give some good performances.
The only cons are that they didn't flush out the story more. There are a lot of interesting characters and world developing that could have happened. It's a shame this probably won't have a sequel or prequel. There is so much potential there.
