The Last Thing Mary Saw (2021)
Intelligent Horror with a Fantastic Atmosphere
Great film with obvious elements of folk horror. Yes, this sub genre is a slow burning one. That's intentional. I believe we are beginning to see a revival of folk horror with this, Saint Maud, and The Witch being the most significant standouts so far.
A great commentary of how destructive conversation therapy can be to both the "participants" and their families.
If you want jump scares, look elsewhere. If you want thought-provoking, intelligent horror, here it is.
As a final note: not once did I find the film to be too dark. Never did I struggle to see a thing. The reliance on candlelight worked very well here. Maybe other viewers do not have properly calibrated screens or they have too much light in the room?
The Grudge (2019)
Horror Gets Worse Every Year
As someone who grew up in the 1970s, I can say the future of horror is looking terrible. We had masterpieces like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Deep Red, Black Christmas, Halloween, The Exorcist, Last House on the Left, Dawn of the Dead, The Omen, and so forth. Those films scared the viewer to the core. Now, many audiences think predictable jump scares are what make a film horrifying. Granted, even today's audience knew this film was terrible. Many resorted to scrolling through social media instead of attempting to remain engaged. Conversations that were unrelated to the film were taking place. Many were laughing at the film, which was never intended to be a comedy. When the end credits suddenly, and poorly, appeared, there was a communal sigh of relief.
That was bad. Very, very bad.
Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Redundant
If you have seen any horror movie of the past decade, you've already seen this movie. Power goes out. Flashlights stop working. Something is creeping around in the background. Awkward, forced humor. Enormously loud sound. You jump. Repeat this a few times. The End. Entertaining, but nothing new. These universes need to be stopped. Conjuring Universe. Marvel Cinematic Universe. Star Wars Universe. They are just money-making conveyor-belts, pushing out the same thing every movie.
