Perfect Hair Forever (2004)
Fantastic Show
This show is just... awesome.
If you've ever sen any anime in your life, then you should be able to recognize the tongue in cheek humor at it's expense. With a boy going on a quest to seek the 9th level of power, given to him by a character named Uncle Grandfather, and with enemies like Catman thrown in the way, it seems familiar, which only makes it funnier.
But the show is still quite a strong show on it's own. The sheer random stupidity of the characters is what makes this show. For instance, during one episode when Coiffio asks his Model Robot to turn into an A-bomb and blow itself up, which it does, Coiffio is then floating in the wreckage of his space ship, and goes "Aww... now I miss him" and proceeds to sing a song in his honor. (Where he refers to refers to the Model Robot as Model Butthole.) The show is full of characters acting retarded, and one liners that are just magnificent, with the plot being basically dragged along to provide a better vehicle for these, which is fine.
Speaking of the plot, in typical Williams Street style, there isn't one of any consequence. Any sane thoughts that there may be a plot are dashed by the 2nd episode. And it is glorious. I mean, how could you not laugh during such clever plot devices as the Cat-Bun Wars? (When an army of Cats and an army of Hot Dogs Buns square off) What makes it even better is that this 6 episode run ends with no resolution, because the 6th episode is just a bunch of random crap that reminds me more of Robot Chicken then anything else. ("Look dad! I invented the internet! But it's made of wood. That reminds of this song, it's called, "I'm a failure!") In short, the show is basically 12 minutes of solidly delivered one liners coming from an awesome selection of characters, being driven along on a plot that could not have been conceived without the aide of some sort of hallucinogenic drug. And I love it.
Minoriteam (2005)
God Awful
Let me begin by stating that I'm hardcore adult swim viewer, I live for the comedy lineup. Hell, I even find delight in watching 12oz Mouse. But I can't bring myself to enjoy this crap.
A show about that lampoons racism? I'm not sure why Adult Swim needed another one of these shows, because in my humble opinion The Boondocks already does an amazing job of that. And, on top of that, they don't even attack racism in an entertaining or new way. It's basically a 12 minute long cartoon version of "Mind of Mencia" (which is a bad thing by the way) See, the show would be a lot better if it was witty. But guess what, it isn't! The "humor" is derived from what at least sounds like white people imitating various minorities. If I wanted to hear that I'd ask my friend to imitate a Chinese guy. They basically take poorly derived characters that have no depth to them at all, and make them act stereotypical. And then there's villains who on paper are awesome ideas, but are just one dropped ball after another. You'd think it would be funny, you really would, but it's miserable.
Unfortunately there's nothing that I can dillute myself into liking about this show. I can't even bring myself to dwell on this piece of flaming crap anymore. At the very most, 2/10.
Moral Orel (2005)
Great show, but it's easy to see how somebody could not like it.
OK, let me begin by stating that I'm a staunch adult swim viewer. I can't really think of a show on adult swim that I haven't really gotten to like. Morel Oral is no exception.
Moral Orel is a definite tongue in cheek satire, of the Christian right especially. That having been said, I can see how somebody of strong religious beliefs can find it to be offensive. The writers take no prisoners when they go after their target.
The show is about a lad named Orel who goes through his life trying desperately to only do God's work. This, combined with a rigidly over-literal interpretation can lead Orel down some crazy paths. I mean, it takes a lot for a kid to get started on crack because he's sure it's God's way. About 3/4 of the way through each episode, when young Orel is in it up to his neck (be it in a tide of naked zombies, his urine he's selling, or his divine crack habit) Orel's father pulls him aside to make him understand the error of his ways... and in doing so usually comically misses the point. For instance, when Orel raises a plethora of zombies because he thinks that it's a sin to be dead, and strips them of their bloody clothes, and then Orel's dad brings him to his study to explain the 11th commandment, "Thou shalt be ashamed of one's anatomy" (or something like that, I can't remember the quote)
And all along the way there's a certain bleak sense of humor. Orel's school mascot is called the "Vanishing American" which is a Native American dancing around crying. And then the satanic track coach who was ready to sacrifice a goat to Satan in his office/cult temple. And of course the hypocritical pastor. The (dark) jokes flow freely and you can't do anything but laugh.
That having been said, I really, really enjoy this show. Of course it's ludicrous. But then again, what on the Adult Swim lineup isn't? If you want to watch something tame, you're watching the wrong channel. This is perfectly normal Adult Swim level humor just with strong satirical overtones directed at devout religion.
All in all, 9/10 I'm only not giving a 10 because that's reserved for an absolutely perfect show, this is fantastic but not perfect.
