Napoleon (2023)
An epic story with all flat characters
I was really looking forward to my hero Phoenix playing in this epic historic drama. Boy, was I disappointed. He's as flat as a pancake, and he walks around with no emotions and a grumpy face all movie. I really didn't understand what Phoenix was trying to do, except for looking quasi interesting. Napoleon as a complicated character? Never felt it. En then Josephine, his passionate forever love. She was not shining, she played casually like the girl next door, Napoleons love was not sparkling from the screen, Josephine wasn't even attractive. All over a movie with flat characters and a lot of poor war horses galloping to their tragic death, with the emperor looking troubled on the battlefield. Seriously a waste of time, I'm sorry. Also for myself, cause I was looking forward to an epic role for Joaquin. Missed chance.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Such an expensive movie, and then you fail to speak proper Dutch for one minute
In the movie, Oppenheimer is a professor in Leiden, The Netherlands. You can hear him speak 'Dutch' for a class of students, but everyone in our Dutch movie theatre mumbled 'what? What's he saying?' It was a fantasy language, and certainly not Dutch, not even German. I think making a movie about real events requires proper investigation and love for details. Therefore we thought it was irritating that the actor and director didn't check this scene with Dutchies. The movie was very long and there were lots of characters and names you had to remember, but the general warning and impact of human destruction power and balances of power was very clear and very frightening. The uncertainty whether the bomb would destroy the complete atmosphere, and that they took that risk: man, one day we will really destroy earth, one way or the other.
Ragnarok (2020)
Nice, but sooo sloooow
The landscapes, the actors, the story, all okay. But this Magne guy is so introvert, silent and slow that I felt the urge to yell at him. But I gonna watch next seaoson.
El amor menos pensado (2018)
Long time ago I was so bored
I expected a predictable but hopefully funny feelgood movie about an older couple divorcing, going wild and then coming together again. Well, sorry to say it was neither funny nor feelgood. It was a lot of boring conversations between boring people who were funny nor interesting. It's never witty, intelligent or interesting. The husband and wife laugh, have sex, love eachother, have a great life together, so it's completely idiot when they split up. Why? Then they have stupid affairs. The husband finds a hippie girl in the subway, the wife ends up living together with a boring teacher. Why? This is the most terrible and completely predictable movie I saw in 2019, and I saw a lot... Don't spoil your precious time on this movie, unless you need two hours of sleep in the cinema, as my friend did.
Capharnaüm (2018)
You want to run away but you just can't
Moving, astonishing realistic, halfway the movie I felt the urge to run away from this black and sad world, but I had to stay. A film every one should see, and then count your blessings for not beeing an undocumented refugee in Libanon. I have never seen something like this.
The Favourite (2018)
worth all the stars despite some week moments
The story is sometimes weak and predictable, but boy, what an actresses, what an actors, what a clothes. Emma Thompsons is the reel queen of this movie together with Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz. the different scenes are divided in fine dramatic plots, really genius, I was breathless, by the smart way of making this movie look astonishing,
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
You'ld better watch The Favourite
This movie is more like a nice colourfull documentary on Mary Queen of Scotts. There is no real drama, no people of flesh and blood, lot is explained in dialoques. It is a pity that there wasn't a single moment I felt really sorry, sad, exited or moved. Beautiful landschapes though in Scotland, felt a bit like game of thrones. Both female characters, Mary en Elizabeth, saved this movie. Especiallly Mary was impressve with her light and classic face. Anyway, Movie The Favourite (Emma Stone) was much more witty, energetic en intelligent, breathtaking. If you have a choice: go there.
Aquaman (2018)
clichés
Despite the fact that I am a big Momoa fan and I loved to see hem play aquaman, I think this movie doesn't have one original angle. It is a non creative mix of elements we already know from other movies like Temple of Doom, Da Vinci Code, Superman. The 'ironic' jokes are funny neither intelligent, a missed chance. There are some fantastic effects, so it is worth the long sit, but over all I expected a more intelligent movie.
