The Marsh King's Daughter (2023)
Engaging, tense and beautiful
(Disclaimer: I did not read the book)
This is an engaging, beautifully shot, story that keeps you on your toes and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
Story wise it avoids many of the clichés it's genre usually indulges in, which was refreshing and kept me engaged throughout.
The acting is great specially from Daisy Ridley, who was the emotional leading force of the movie with a understated but emotional performance. Ben Mendelsohn and Brooklynn Prince also gave great performances.
The cinematography is gorgeous, with beautiful landscapes and tense editing. The sound design is also a standout for me by keeping the tension up with a unusual sound identity and being very environmentally immersive.
I would say, however, the movie could have explored some characters a bit more and could have benefited from some extra 5 to 10 minutes of runtime (since I found the end a bit abrupt).
Willow (2022)
Refreshing and new!
This, for me, was one of the most refreshing fantasy series of the last couple years.
(For people just now getting to it: the show takes a few episodes to find it's footing but when it does it's amazing)
It's a fun and light-hearted adventure that captures the 80s cinema feel with a modern twist.
No bleak overly serious drama with self serving characters scheming and backstabbing eachother that will make you feel depressed for a couple hours.
Full of spectacle (action, comedy, effects).
Great cinematography and a beautiful series.
Fun and talented cast with lot's of chemistry.
Hope we get a second season because it really has a lot of potential.
Life Is Strange: True Colors (2021)
The best Life is Strange game so far!
The acting is phenomenal with amazing performances from the main cast (Erika Mori knocked it out of the park).
The addition of motion capture takes the character animation to another level specially with the facial animations that are some of the best I've seen (and another testament to the acting quality).
The music, as with any LiS game, creates an atmosphere that can both bring a smile to your face or leave you misty eyed.
The art style is more refined than ever maintaining the LiS "animated painting" look without sacrificing quality of animation or realism.
The story and writing are phenomenal with greatly fleshed out characters that feel real and with an emotional though provoking premise.
Amazing all around!
A Banquet (2021)
Nice first half but kinds drops from there
The performances from the main actors are great, specially from the mom (Sienna Guillory) and the daughter (Jessica Alexander).
The movie itself has got an interesting and mysterious atmosphere in the first half, that pulls you in but, as the second half of the film goes on, it loses direction and feels like it doesn't know what it is anymore. It's like the two halves don't fit. It ends abruptly and in a unsatisfying way, even by sudden ambiguous thriller/horror movie endings.
Tall Girl 2 (2022)
Just... Why?
Do yourself a favour and don't watch the movie. Even if it's hate-watching or just to make fun of it, it will only lead to Netflix making more of these.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Quality all around
Watched it in the cinema and even with the reduced amount of people from the social distancing seating the atmosphere in the room was great. It was constant laughing and gasping all the way through and you could tell everyone was loving it.
The film is unapologetic funny, gory and crude, with moments of honest emotion that hit deep.
The cinematography and effects were almost flawless.
The acting was amazing around the board from highlights from Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, David Daztmalchian, just to name a few.
If you don't have problems with gore I highly advise the film.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Great beginning terrible ending
An interesting series with good production and great acting that seemed to be going great places but instead had a disappointing ending. Idk what happened but it was pretty refreshing in it's first season and beginning of season 2 but somehow lost sight of itself and ended in a way that makes little sense, and worse in my eyes, sent a bad message.
Treasure Planet (2002)
A shamefully ignored gem of animated cinema
This film is a marvel on every front!
From a storytelling perspective, this movie captures you and takes you on an amazing adventure that doesn't lack emotion.
The charters are complex and very well written and their characterization is only enhanced by great acting. Even the villain, which in most Disney movies is the character that lacks dept and intricacies, is in Treasure Planet an example of what a great villain is.
Then you have the animation which is a seamless combination of different techniques the with the amazing character designs and the world's blend of old and futuristic designs, makes for a unique feast for the eyes.
The film's beautiful soundtrack by James Newton Howard sets the stage for the emotional journey of the movie and the tracks by Johnny Rzeznik give the an extra storytelling layer.
An amazing movie all around that honestly was doomed by Disney, even before it came out, with a purposely awful publicity campaign.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Worth all the effort just like a moon flower
Amazing once again! So good I couldn't stop myself from binging! The second season spins a completely different tale that was, for me, as engaging, creepy and emotional as the first one, leaving me in tears by the end.
Victoria Pedretti shines as in the lead role and the rest of the cast also give outstanding performances.
The cinematography is once again award worthy and the production value is magnificent.
Cannot give it enough praise.
