I know the movie has been flogged by many and probably deservedly so. Billy Bob Thornton has mastered the ability to dead pan every acting job he takes. To watch him try to genuinely smile in a picture is as scary as watching Christina Ricci as Wednesday try it in Addams Family Values. But to be fair, his style works for him in this movie playing Jasper Woodcock, just as Tommy Lee Jones was perfect as Agent K in Men in Black.
Seann William Scott was fine as John Farley and Susan Sarandon, (still looking mighty fine) was a good choice as Farley's mother. But the actor that really stole the picture was Amy Poehler as Farley's publishing assistant. I always liked her sharp tongue and quick wit. She's been popping up more and more the last few years in comedies and the movies are better for it.
Hokey ending aside, it wasn't as bad a movie as some have stated on this board. At least, not that I thought.
One thing is for sure, if you think long enough, I'm sure you can remember one teacher from school that could pass for Mr. Woodcock. I know I do.
