Son of Batman (2014)
Great Animation and Concept... Many Issues
First, I must give credit to the animation, fight scenes, and the animators. It looks great. Batman and Nightwing's voice actors do a great job.
I enjoy the concept of Batman having a son and what their dynamic could be. I like Damien despite other fans' view of him. His arrogance and entitled behavior is understandable. No affection or love was given to him, just expectations and praise when he fought well from his mother and grandfather.
My first big issue is the lack of depth or emotion in this film. There could have been more care or happiness or statements of such from Batman learning that he had a son. Good can be born from bad things happening. Raven is an example of this. Sure Batman is going to treat Damien the same as Dick and other Robins he fathered, but learning he had an actual son should warrant a bit of reaction. Their relationship could be something important to show. This boy needs some kind of warmth even if it's small. A child that basically has had no care mentally or emotionally needs something. The movie really likes stating things in dialogue rather than showing it. The audience can see that the kid is cold, show us something from the other characters rather than have them joke about him not being a human.
A minor issue is the bad voice acting for Deathstroke. The general dialogue in this movie is weak.
But the BIGGEST issue in the film is the fact that they ignore that Batman was r*ped. Talia Al Ghul is a bad person. She was gaslighting Batman by telling him that he enjoyed it despite her slipping him dr*gs. Can a woman ever be in the wrong in these movies? It's so wrong to treat a horrible thing like it's nothing. Making it seem fine by saying that he enjoyed it is evil of the writers. Men can be the victims in sexual assault too. Maybe it doesn't fit their narratives that men can be victims. And this isn't the only instance of DC writers glossing over men getting r*ped. They did this also in the Batman and Harlequin movie.
The issue isn't necessarily that it happened in the story, the issue is that they treat it like it isn't a horrible, traumatic crime.
These writers need to be fired.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Devoid of Burton's Creativity... Ending Sucks Too
The only things I liked were the Makeup and Practical Effects. Paul Giamatti was good and weird too. That's it.
I knew this movie had bad ratings but I was more than happy to watch a Tim Burton film. I left super disappointed. It seemed like Hollywood scrubbed away any Burton elements and chopped important plot out. The "Twist Ending" made no sense and was terrible.
Kyuketsuki Gokemidoro (1968)
Extremely Entertaining Despite the Weird Plot
I had a lot of fun watching this movie despite the strange plot. The unique set of characters makes the film enjoyable. I still can't get past the plot of the movie though. I, like most Americans, am used to Western Storytelling and a Linear Plot. I thought it was bad writing at first, but then I thought about Studio Ghibli films and Junji Ito's manga. Storytelling isn't universally linear. If you can overlook the strangeness, you'll have fun with this silly horror movie.
Godzilla (1998)
Not bad, but the flaws get in the way.
There's a lot of potential and good things. Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno are great actors. I love the design of Godzilla despite the CGI of the time. And there is a moment that's meant to awe inspire that is successful. It's the scene where Matthew Broderick has a disposable camera and is standing face to face with Godzilla. Despite all the good things, there are a lot of things about the movie that annoy me. The story is difficult to follow at the beginning. The plot has good elements but they feel all jumbled and vague. The lines in the movie are very bland and cliche. There seems to be a lot of unnecessary characters, or characters that don't need to be more than what they are. For example, the red headed scientist kept flirting with Matthew Broderick when it didn't add anything to the plot. He already had another love interest and she was sad when he got kicked off of the project. Having her in the story works yet the romantic interest was unnecessary. My last complaint is that the military planes/jets/drones fly in between the buildings of New York City while chasing Godzilla. There's no way they could not fly single file while making incredibly sharp turns. Like, unrealistic things happen in unrealistic movies, but when things are meant to seem realistic, don't have planes fly in between buildings instead of flying over them.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
A Solid, Fun Film
I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this movie. I was expecting something like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and all its cheesiness. And I was expecting something trying to profit off of the original, beloved Jumanji movie. But this was actually a very good movie! It was fun, made sense, and was exciting. The plot wasn't deep or surprising but there is a lot of cleverness to it! The acting was great, and the jokes were funny too. I would recommend it!
Captain Marvel (2019)
Went With An Open Mind...
So, I went with an open mind to this film, ignoring the feminist advertising. Honestly, the movie was kinda bland. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't enjoyable. It was okay for an origin story movie, but it didn't feel like a Marvel movie. The special effects, CGI, and fight scenes weren't at the MCU standard and weren't believable. Marvel's typically good at building up a story and having tension. But I feel as though the movie had no build up to... well, anything.
Carol Danvers also played a part in me disliking the movie. One of the MCU's main draws is the depth and likability of the Characters. But she wasn't relatable, charming, or interesting. She lacked flaws and any limits. Any limitations were all the antagonists' fault and not hers. To be honest, I wasn't paying any attention to her if another character was on screen. She was slightly annoying and overall boring.
We already have been given amazing female characters in the MCU. You can't tell me that Captain Marvel is the "Strong" female superhero we need. I'm a woman, and she isn't any inspiration to me. Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Gamora inspire me. I find the Male characters just as inspiring. But, I don't need to be inspired. Don't put me in a box, lie to me I'm a victim, and give me what you think I need. Just let me be free to watch movies agenda-free.
