Plot and Characters Not Strong Enough to Sustain Interest
5 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this series and watched right up to Episode 6 ebfore calling it quits. In the end the often visceral violence, sex, and swearing could no longer disguise the weakness of the plot and the characters who inhabit the world of 'Dogs of Berlin'. For a lot of the time the plot simply doesn't ring true and is frankly incredulous. For example at one stage early on, one of the main characters gains access to the dressing room of the German football team before a vital match, and orders everyone out except the players. He gives them some news in the hope of influencing the outcome of the match. Yeah, right. Totally unbelievable.

Many characters seem caricatures, such as the police chief who is in a same-sex marriage, or another who barks orders like a Nike advert, "Just do it!". The head gangster is portrayed as a psychopath, etc. It all feels terribly cliched.

The full frontal male nudity feels gratuitous rather than in any way developing the plot, or character development. The same with the various sex scenes. It all felt a bit like, "how far can we push this", rather than trying to deepen the characters or advance various plot lines.

The series also attempts to draw attention to theunder-current of neo-Nazi fascism in the under-class of white Berliners. An important issue and one that is indeed deeply concerning. But here it feels like a caricature.

These are important issues facing German society and this series deals with them in a sympathetic and a time courageous manner. I just think the basics of character and plot development took second place to these issues.

In the end, seeing splattered brains on the footpath and hearing so many four-letter words to describe female genitalia got the better of me. I don't think I'm a prude but violence, sex and foul language could not alone sustain my interest over ten episodes. I needed more, so stopped watching Your milage may well indeed vary.

The Final Shot Was A Triumph of Hollywood Sentimentality
6 February 2009
This movie does a reasonably job at addressing the issue of dementia, aging and family issues. Philip Seymour Hoffman shines as always, as does Laura Linney. Occasionally the movie gets close to observing the true horror of aging/dementia but for the most part pulls its punches and chooses instead to concentrate on the brother/sister relationship. True to Hollywood, all is resolved and we can all move forward. Someone commented that the movie was the "most human look at life I've seen in theaters this year". Well, maybe, if you like everything neat and tidy. Which life ain't really. However the movie is very well acted, has strong production values and a well-crafted script expertly directed. I would have rated it higher were it not for the final scene. Clearly the work of the 'money men', the final shot is a triumph of Hollywood sentimentality, a cop-out and a farce.

A Very Good Film
27 December 2007
Yes, this is a very good film. With Istvan Szabo directing and Lajos Koltai behind the camera you wouldn't expect anything less. The production values are very high and the film "looks" magnificent. While based on a novel of the 1920s, I reckon Szabo choose to make a film of this classic Hungarian work because it speaks to modern day Hungary. The issue of corruption remains a corrosive aspect of modern day Hungary. Perhaps because of this, this film is directed at Hungarian audiences and so rates comparatively low in IMDb ratings. Perhaps so, but this film is well acted, brilliantly directed, superbly photographed and well worth watching.

Not Everyone's Cup of Tea, But...
23 April 2007
Yes, this is not for every movie goer. But it rewards those who love the art of film making. Very stylized, yes, but directed by someone who has chosen film as his medium for expresses and articulating a world view that is bleak, atheistic and unforgiving. You may not "like" this film: but as an antidote to all that is superficial, crass and commercial it is terrific. To some, it is intellectual masturbation: to those who see film as an art form, a movie to be admired, debated and savored. It will be seen by fewer than those who enter any "Blockbuster" video store on any given day- but, God help me, I would rather see this film than any other at that store.
