Takes a long time to get going
8 February 2024
I don't like movies that take the first half for character development with no real action. This movie was billed as a horror movie, so I wanted some horror. Sure it was weird, but so what I will say, however, that once the action started, it really took off. So that's why I didn't give it a lower rating. So this movie was a real mixed bag. I can't say that I didn't enjoy it. I don't really have that much to say about this movie so this required characters thing that IMDb has going on for reviews is a real deterrent to writing reviews. We knew what was going to happen at the very beginning of the movie, but we didn't know how it was going to happen. So that's the surprising suspenseful part of it.

A real gem
2 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It's 2023 and I'm just watching this movie for the first time. It is so wonderful and quirky, I can't believe it. It sets a really high bar which has rarely been surpassed either before or after. The movies that I've rated nine stars are few and far between, but when I do it's because I feel the movie has been successful in realizing its vision. This is one such movie. And on top of that, the vision for this movie is novel and interesting. Interesting concept, great story and competent acting set a pretty high bar to top. Better late than never. I'm sure glad I decided to watch this on a whim. I wished I had made a bowl of popcorn.

Probably successful...
29 December 2023
...at being really really stupid. That's the only reason I gave it a generous 5 stars - because what if it were supposed to be as awful as it is. If I never see another movie or television show with that awful lead actor in it - Leandro Hassum - it will be too soon. Even though the director of this stink bomb probably encouraged everybody to over act, Leandro went way way beyond that. Jerry Lewis would have been embarrassed for him. Maybe I'm being unfair. Maybe this movie was targeted to a 10-13 year old demographic. How insulting would that be to10-13 year olds? Assuming this crap would be all that their prepubescent minds could digest or find entertaining. No, this movie is a disappointment on so many levels. I would only hope that my kids thought so also.

A very nice surprise
16 December 2023
Even though the trailer made this movie look like it was going to be fun, it was still a surprise to me that it is a really solid zombie movie. I have seen a LOT of zombie movies, and this one is better than at least 60% of them. It's a far cry from Night of the Living, Dead, World, War, Z, or Train to Busan, but it is successful in its own right. It doesn't aspire to be great - I think they just wanted to make an entertaining movie. And it certainly does that. With an interesting story with a lot of unique action. Protagonists that I rooted for and antagonists who I wanted to see die. The characters aren't one-dimensional and the acting is very adequate. I'm glad I tuned in - it was definitely not a waste of my time.

Plenty of talking, but action?
17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not so much. If this show gets better, then I'll come back and edit this review. But I'm doubting it will happen. I'm back after episode 3 and 3 episodes is all I'm giving this stinker; there are thousands of more entertaining shows than this bomb. "Aw, c'mon, it can't be THAT sparse on monster action." Okay, you judge for yourself: there were 3 whole minutes of kaiju screen time. Three crummy minutes. "Ya gotta give it more than 3 episodes." And waste even more time on this klunker? No. And I'm someone who has watched every Godzilla movie (except for Son of Godzilla) multiple times.

This show just plain stinks.

When I heard this show was going to be on Apple+, my initial thought was, "if it's better than a SyFy movie, I'll be surprised." It's been a week of surprises for me... but this ain't one of them. Maybe y'all want to watch "Monarch: Legacy of soap operas" but I don't. Talk, talk and more talk. Actually, it's a lot like a pre-2000s Toho Godzilla movie. One of the ones where I (probably) watch the whole thing the first time I watch it. But then on subsequent viewings, I fast forward through 80%. Because I just don't care about the characters and their interactions. I'm watching because it's supposed to be a Godzilla movie. SUPPOSED to be. Hey... 2019's "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" showed it was possible. Character development while the action - and lots of it - is taking place. It's called good writing.

But I doubt I'll even continue watching this garbage. We have too many television options for me to keep watching something that isn't entertaining or providing an enriching experience.

The more I'm watching this show, the more I'm feeling like a 4-star rating is too generous. See for yourself. My late spouse used to love SyFy movies and series. There's no accounting for taste.

An oldie and a goodie
31 October 2023
This one's got it all. Romance, comedy, horror, gore, ZOMBIES - just to name a few. Many years ago, I heard that this was considered the goriest movie ever made, something along the lines of "used the most fake blood ever used in a movie." And, once you get into it, you'll see why. I just rewatched it many years later and it is still a lot of fun. Easily the equal - or better - of any "modern film." This movie makes them all look lame by comparison. Okay, maybe World War Z or Train to Busan or Kingdom are better strictly zombie movies, but Dead Alive is so much more than just a zombie movie. I LOVE a good zombie movie and this one is all that and much more. A lot of fun.

Surprisingly decent
25 September 2023
What's with all the bad ratings? I was expecting a crappy SyFy made-for-television movie, but this was a decent movie. The story certainly wasn't Oscar or Emmy worthy and pretty predictable, but it worked. The acting was adequate. The special effects were quite good and surprisingly plentiful. One of my pet peeves is when a movie like this is full of talk talk talk and skimpy on action. Not so this movie. If you need a Hollywood blockbuster, then this might be a slight disappointment. But it by no means bad.

What's with the minimum character requirement for reviews on here? This particular movie, for instance, wasn't bad or good so there isn't that much to say about it and a review of 600+ characters doesn't seem necessary.

Christmas horror fun!
3 January 2023
I love Christmas horror movies. But they've kind of run out of stories. Deranged Santa, sorority house killer or Krampus. With some great notable exceptions - mostly European films - we've seen the same recycled stories. Is Mercy Christmas a B movie. Sure. Is it low budget? Yes. Not to mention the so-so acting. BUT it is a really unique story and it tells that story very successfully. I wanted the good characters to live and the bad characters to gruesomely die. My old jaded self usually only cares about the characters in 15% of the movies or shows I watch. I really enjoyed this movie - period. It was fun!

Need your heart warmed?

Sweet, but not overly so. All the ingredients are here and they've made a good product. I was touched and entertained throughout. I'm not sure what else to say to convince you that watching this brave little show is time well spent. "Find out who you are and do it on purpose." The great Dolly Parton didn't have this show in mind when she said it, but it surely applies. This show succeeds beautifully at what it aims to be. Fun.

Wait... what now?
25 May 2022
This was supposed to be a horror movie? "What was that - did you see that?" "What was that noise? Did you hear that?" This was more like an episode of one of those stupid Ghost Hunter shows. Forty-nine minutes in to an 80 minute movie and no horror. I only gave it a 5 star rating because it was well filmed, especially since it was a "found footage" movie. That should have tipped me off. It was not worth the time I wasted on it.

Stupid... but entertaining
22 May 2022
Yes, this was real low-brow entertainment, but it was like a train wreck and I couldn't look away. Especially entertaining for gay men because the "gladiators" were real scantily clad eye candy. Dumb as rocks, but quite physically attractive. Their girlfriends accompanied the guys and they did nothing to increase the collective intelligence level. Not as scantily clad as the boys, but I guess the hetero men (and maybe some less discerning lesbians) might be titillated. This was a competition and the girls' tasks were actually more interesting than the guys'. I'll reiterate - this one season series was stupid, but entertaining. (The gladiator trainer, played by David McIntosh, was so intensely beautiful, it hurt my eyes. He was previously a contestant on the equally stupid Love Island.)

What a treat:
14 May 2022
...a well written, ably acted hard hitting television show. Great casting with 3-dimensional realistic characters. This show is not for young kids nor faint hearted adults. Alan Ritchson is terrific - and great eye-candy. I'm very happy I stumbled across it. Watch the first episode - you'll know right away whether you're going to enjoy it or not. (Just 'cause I love it doesn't mean you're going to.)

It actually deserves zero stars

How, oh HOW, does this piece of garbage get a 6.2 rating? I can't find anything good to say about this piece of excrement other than it perhaps being amusing at the drive-in if you drop some acid and/or have some really good pot. Otherwise, a hard pass.

A solid multi-faceted movie
1 May 2022
Y'know, if you don't like horror movies, then it's not fair that you review this movie. What on earth did you watch it for? It's 100% what it intended to be: a suspenseful horror movie with a really original story and not bad acting. I'm pretty jaded so I knew what was going to happen, but it was well done and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I wish there could be a sequel.

Warning: Spoilers
How does this movie end up with only a 5.8 rating? What more do you want from a movie? I just watched it for like the 4th time, thinking, "I'll fast forward through the slow parts." There aren't any!!! Good story, good casting, passable acting and even the happy ending that we're hoping for. A beautiful and highly entertaining movie. I'll ask again, "what more could you want from a movie?"

All of Us Are Dead (2022– )

Grim. Very grim.
1 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The moral of this story? Good guys (people) finish last.

I love zombie flicks and South Korea made one of my all-time favorites: you guessed it... Train to Busan. But here they've taken an ENDLESS amount of time with character development, but why? To get us to like the characters so that it stings even worse when they kill them off? Yeah, I know lots of dead characters is to be expected, but they spend 11-ish hours on character development and it just feels like they're torturing us.

I'm almost done with the series. I watched it all because currently there was nothing else on Netflix any better. But I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

Had I known how it would end...
17 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I probably wouldn't have bothered watching the whole series. Despite its many shortcomings, I actually enjoyed the series. The pace was SLOW. That usually bothers me - this time it didn't. Casting was odd, but I liked it. We've seen this story ad nauseum, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I would have rated it 7 or 8 stars if not for the absolutely awful disappointing ending. I was a fan of the program up until the last 3 minutes. Huge HUGE disappointment. Supposedly Archive 81 is a big hit for Netflix so we'll see a season 2, but the writers didn't know that when they wrote the horrible ending for season 1. So disappointing because I enjoyed the entire rest of the series.

Didn't see the "original"
8 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So many people on here want to tell you how this English remake pales in comparison to the "original." What's with the quotes around "original?" It wasn't!!! It was from a comic book and that's even acknowledged by some of the reviewers. I didn't read the comic or see the previous version of this movie and, who knows, maybe that's why I enjoyed this one so much. I'm not very generous with the stars when I'm reviewing something on here, but this movie was good. Real good. A wonderfully twisted story with a very surprising ending. Lots of cool violence throughout and maybe that's what distracted me from guessing the mind-blowing ending.

If you enjoy twisted stuff, then treat yourself.

Very very lowbrow entertainment
7 January 2022
Surely one of the director's instructions to the actors was, "ham it up, everyone." Nice visuals and lots of fun gimmicks, though. If there's nothing else to watch...

25 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching the first episode, so my rating might change. But in the first episode, it feels like science was thrown out the hatch. Oh, wait, the hatch wasn't working correctly - along with everything else on the ship! It would be a shorter list if we counted what WAS working on this space ship. And didn't it occur to anyone involved with this production that moon gravity is about 1/6 earth gravity? Perhaps if the story was compelling I might be distracted from the series' glaring science holes. (I also couldn't care less whether the characters live or die, so that's a major problem with the story telling.) I'm going to give it another episode or two, but I may not even finish the first season of this series.

It sure is beautiful though. Top-notch visuals.

I'm on episode 4 and they still haven't figured out how gravity works on the moon or the science behind plant growth. And I still don't care who lives or dies - although I was happy that the most obnoxious character died in the first episode. I didn't know how much of him I was going to be able to tolerate.

I'm watching the last episode. Not sure why I wasted my time with this series. And they found more science to ignore. The same side of the moon always faces the earth. All their science blunders are grade school science! I just saw the finale and it stunk as bad as the rest of the series. If it gets a season 2, I'm not going to waste my time on it.

BOOORING!!!
22 December 2021
There's a 15 minute recap of the first season?!?! It's probably better than the actual first season. I don't care about any of the characters and that's the very basis of a good show or movie: caring whether the characters live or die. The actors are committed, but I'm embarrassed for Henry Cavill. Did he need the money, maybe? Everybody wants to have the next Game of Thrones, but the Witcher fails as bad as Amazon's Wheel of Time. I'm bored!

Another crappy SyFy show
5 December 2021
3/4 garbage "character development" cheesy interactions - 1/4 action. And that's being generous. If it gets a 2nd season, y'all will have to tell me if it got any better because I've got way better ways to waste my time. And way better television content to... well, waste my time on.

A sequel this good? Unexpected.
17 November 2021
I can see from its 7.3 rating that I'm not the only one who thought this movie was good. I gave it an extra point because it was a sequel and all too often they pale in comparison to the original. Not this one though. I daresay I preferred it to Part 1. And the young actors were sensational. Bravo. And I see John Krasinski got the writing credit. Impressive.

Treat yourself.

Perfectly mediocre
6 July 2021
This movie probably started with a (lame) concept and then they recycled a script that's already been used a hundred (or more) times. No spoilers here because I fell asleep with 45 minutes left. A perfectly mediocre - and boring - movie.
