Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
It was OK in places, but not for younger viewers.
To be honest, it was OK at best. There were a few good scenes where they were fighting, but a lot of the intentionally unsteady camera work made it uncomfortable to follow at times and I was horrified when it ended - just like that - as if it was a TV show that should have had "To be continued" at the end...we paid a lot to go, our round trip took four buses, and it was my 8 year olds birthday treat, I felt like I saw half a film - which I guess I did, but they could have had some kind of conclusion to end it at, rather than a scene that was clearly just going to be continued at a later date.
I think after leaving the house at 10am, not going in until 12:15, sitting through 45 minutes of adverts...by the end of the film, my little boy was just glad we were going home.
If the kids aren't dead set on seeing it right now, wait until Part 2 comes out then take a day and watch them together. By next year when the final part is released, my son will probably have grown out of HP and we'll be on to the next thing and I'll never know what happened...I guess I'll have to read the book.
Cloverfield (2008)
Cloverfield - more like cow pasture.
This was truly an awful film. I can't impress upon you enough how dreadful it was. Possibly the worse film I have ever, ever, seen in my life. The people writing good reviews for it can't possibly have been watching the same movie, did they release a different version in the UK? I read lots of online reviews and sat happily expecting the scares to come flooding, but after some annoying young people talked a bit at a party, something went bang and then the rubbish ensued. I was kept interested in the first really dull half hour by the promise that something good was going to happen in a minute....it didn't, in fact, it didn't happen in the first 125 minutes.
It was dreadful, awful, terrible and stupid beyond belief. I am left to surmise that people just say they liked it so they don't feel so bad about having spent the money to go see it.
Don't do it. I beg you. Go see The Bucket List or No Country For Old Men - both of which I would have paid double to see.
There was no good acting, or tension, or frights or pretty much - story line.
Some bloke with a camcorder runs round in the dark (for pretty much the entire film) and you get flashes of something, what was it? who knows, then a lot of blowing things up and screaming, some more running about in the dark, some screaming, a bit of blowing things up, an explosion that should have killed everyone - but unfortunately didn't...
There, now you don't even need to go see it. Just read the above paragraph for an hour and twenty five minutes and you'll pretty much have it down.
The ONE thing I was impressed with was whatever camcorder they used managed to survive when it should have been broken in the first half hour. What ever that was, I want one of those.
Balamory (2002)
The greatest songs.
Balamory is excellent but forget the title song, they added a rock song for each character. The greatest by far is P.C. Plum's song - done in the style of 70's/80's rock, very much a "Queen" tribute. It has Plumy playing on the roof of Buckingham palace. It has visual effects the same as Bohemian Rhapsody. It's a classic rock track. It's fabulous. Fortunately, our four year old likes it too so we pretend we're humouring him and listen to it quite often.
There's a CD too. Buy it. Some of the other songs are good and Archie is always funny, Miss Hoolie is charming, I love that Suzie and Penny are there to help each other, Josie and Spencer don't get the good stories but Edie is always where it's at - she's Miss Hoolies best friend, they went on holiday together the other episode. Brilliant stuff.
Watch out for that plum song. Outstanding.
