Benny Loves You (2019)
Hey, wanna see something insane?)
Insanity. This is the first word that comes to mind when watch this. But I'm putting it in a good way here, that type of madness we watch indie horror comedies for. Of course if you are a squeamish watcher and value good visuals, stellar acting and Oscar worthy scriptwriting, you definitely better give it a pass.
As I am not a fussy viewer and appreciate originality and creativity over flawless cinematography and profissionalism in filmaking, I did enjoy "Benny loves you", but unfortunately not completely. The fundamental weakness to my taste here is utter violence and gore. Honestly, I would like it so much better if there was more of Benny rattling around with a knife or a pair of nippers without taking an action, because it would be absolutely enough. Taking about Benny himself...oh, man, he is a star. For starters wanna commend Benny's appearance and voice choices, this is where movie definetely succeeds. Besides the fact that Benny is mad as a cut snake and his capacity for diverse sorts of violence, he is absolutely adorable. Along with Willy's Wonderlands' "It's your birthday" song, Benny's creepy laughter will stay in my memory for quite a long time. And actually mentioned above Willy's Wonderlands could be a good indicator to make a conclusion to watch or not to watch this one. If you enjoyed seeing Nicolas Cage whooping puppets' arses, perhaps you should give Benny a chance as well. In my point of view in comparison Benny is an obvious winner, despite its cheap look and over-the-top violence...but it's all a personal taste matter.
If noted above is enough for you to jump into mad Benny's world, be prepared...Benny levitates. Like. Seriously, he does. The Problem is we don't really have a top-notch CGI here, so Benny's feet do not touch the ground when he walks, which kinda looks a bit wierd. Also some parts of the final battle in the house, considering that they were almost completely made using computer, appear too catoonish and cheap. But then follows a crucial slow-more scene with jumping through the window and the shootout with the police which absolutely carried me away.
So, in short Benny loves you is a typical guilty pleasure for black comedy fiends. It would be odd to tell someone with no specific taste for that kinda thing, that you enjoyed it. All because movie is completely bananas and unprepared viewers will bulge their eyes and probably report you, so you risk to end up in a mental house) Not a bad acting, good chemestry between two leads (classic looser and classic not-a-lady-lady). Suporting cast does a good job too, some characters are more memorable and likable than others. Hillarios openning scene with a bear. And of course...Benny)

Dawn of the Beast (2021)
Yes, it's Uncork'd, but it's not bad
Choosing a movie to watch typically I try to do my best not to be shallow and prejudiced. So, coming from my experience, cheap looking posters, obviously bad acting in trailer, no trailer at all and low rating not always can speak for movies' qualities. Onlly such indications as presence of Eric Roberts or others, who discredited themselves, among the cast and rates drastically lower than 4 guarantee a movie a rejection. Sorry, can't watch everything... Besides all this sometimes when I see Uncork'd Entertainment's video introduction in trailer or in a movie's opening I can have doubts about the whole idea of watching it. Fortunately Dawn of the Beast is not the case. Not to say that this one is great, it's not. But still I don't regret spending my extremely precious time on it.
Where the movie succeds is it's ability to look original within horror slasher genre. It follows all slasher trops but manages to deliver something new as well. 5 kinda youngsters or middle-aged students (sometimes it's hard to tell, which category they represent), professor who leads the expedion (typical drunkhead), cabin in the woods (pretty original, ha?), opening scene with some entities, lurking in the forest (which tension managed to give me thrills though)... we've seen it all. But here we have a little more than that. For instance makers' approach regarding the final girl and the crucial battle with upbeat soundtrack closer to the end. All that along with impressive for a tight b-movie budget special effects, created eerie pressing atmosphere, not a bad acting of the cast and obvious dedication to the filmmaking process from all members of the crew make Dawn of the Beast a standout among other cliche'd stereotypical horrors.
On the negative side... Some script decisions are rather questionable, especially when it comes to the way they decided to eliminate a couple of characters in somewhere in the midle of the movie, too boring to my liking. Even though the acting isn't terrible, still it has its downs. Such as implausible screaming and big speeches right in the middle of the blood bath. The second one is more about flaws of the script too, but still. Also unlike the first part with all its tension and macabre atmosphere, the second one is not scary at all. Constant running around the house and hiding become annoying. Overuse of depressing soundtrack, designed to convey the proper mood, with the tension gone makes it irritating. Hopefully closer to the end movie gets back on track and keeps its pace and quality till the very closure.
All in all Dawn of the Beast is a good example of low-budget indie flick, flawed, but with heart. All envolved in the process knew exactly what they were going for, despite lack of money and, probably, experience. So...there you have it)

The Arbors (2020)
A movie with a creature, not a creature movie
Don't really get the low rating. If you treat this movie accordinglly, as an independent horror flick, you probably will be satisfied in some way...of course if you have a taste for those kinda things)
First of all this is not your conventional monster movie with lots of gore, blood and creature in a shot. Creature is present though, but its role is secondary. What is crucial here is a portrait of a small town under testing circumstances. So even the movie's atmosphere has more like psychological thriller's vibes, rather than horror's mood. Besides the fact that there are several characters in the story, the whole narative pivots around one person, which is an obvious standout here either as a character in the plot or as a performance. Drew Matthews really shines here, giving this authentic maybe even unic portrayal of socially awkward loner with a mysterious trauma in his childhood, which is unvailed only closer to the end. Fair warning here, the film's runtime is close to two hours, so if you don't enjoy the first half of it, there's no need for you to endure the whole thing, course you won't see anything drastically new or plotchanging in the second act. Everything is kinda logical here, considering indie horror-thriller logic occuring of course. Perhaps even for me the ending was a downside, despite the fact I kinda saw where it was going. Maybe it actually was the key problem for me, so I couldn't give the movie a higher mark. Deep in my heart I still wanted to see some sort of climax, a gamechanger, a little explotion in the narrative, something more emotional and powerful. Unfortunately the movie keeps its pace and its direction, not to say it makes it worse, it just made it a little bit underwhelming for me personally.
In a nutshell The Arbors is a good example of independent horror-thriller with grim and stringy depressing atmosphere and top-notch cinematography, it never tries to mimic anything, choses its own path and reaches its destination with dignity, which gives it credit. Visually creature is effective, especially keeping in mind that it's nothing like big money involved hollywood project, but an independent one, shot with tight budget. Also it's the director's full meter debut and he's setting a pretty high bar here, so I'm looking forward to seeing his following works.
I Think We're Alone Now (2018)
Pessimistic in the most optimistic way
Can't say this flick gives something new to the genre of post-apocalypse, but it definitely can give you something good to watch and some fresh ideas to mull over.
First of all "I Think We're Alone Now" is it's cast. Both main characters are well-written and amasingly played, chemestry between them is belivable and thier motives are queit understandable. It's interesting enough to watch how these two pollar opposite characters interelate in each joint scene.
Another peculiar fact about this movie is that it feels like a director's monologue about loneliness with or without people around and ability to handle significant loss in your life. Each character here has it's own way of managing such tragedy as a death of someone they knew. And I found it amasing that the idea of being honest to oneself is the most important moral direction for the main characters.
Also I wanna add that the sound accompaniment is great. Intense and dreadful, when it should be. It helps to feel the movie deeply.
If You are ok with something slow-burning but dramatic and thoughtful, You better give it a go, I'm convinced you won't be disappointed.
