A Complete History of My Sexual Failures (2008)
Great piece of film-making
Normally i don't comment on films on this site because people get to caught up in the semantics of the film and forget all about what the film is. Let me start by saying i hate documentaries normally, because they are intrusive and they people who make them are normally assholes who don't know how to just leave it alone. This film however is a great self analytical journey exploring, life relationships and sex, the filmmaker puts himself in a very vulnerable position. The structure of the film is so solid, he begins with nothing and the pace is very slow, so you become aware of everything he is doing, analysing everything he is doing and thats where it truly shines because the pace quickens and the comedy kicks in. Most of it i believe has not been staged, well the emotional moments at least and a little bit of info for all those who complain about the "staged" moments....every documentary has been staged to make it seem more interesting, he just so happens to make it fit rather nicely and i don't give it a 9 very lightly as it has restored my faith in documentary filmmakers.
Dnevnoy dozor (2006)
One Of the greatest pieces of cinema
This movie stunned me as it is so much superior to the first (as good as it was), this movie leads away from the story in the first movie of the boy and his movement to the darker side. He is now a bit older and has grown an affection towards the leader of the dark side. The film delves much deeper into explaining what each side is and how they came about as well as the search for one of their most presious doctirnes. The film has quite a buddist feel and jumps into mythology much deeper. Warning Spoiler: The plot revolves around a 2 new main characters one with nightwatch and one with the daywatch, the story uses the new character in the nightwatch to explain the gloom better and what it is. I cant remember the name of it but it also explains how the light and the dark sides are different and something which allows the dark side to slip into level 2 (i think) of the gloom where no light side may go apart from this new woman. The effects in the film are amazing including a moterbike along the side of a building and horses jumping through walls. I wish i could give a better explanation but I'm very tired i hoped this convinced you that this film will be far superior to the first and it also comes to a good self contained conclusion leaving the story it portrayed in the first open for the last film.
