Archie (2023)
It's really Dyan Cannon venting
What a slapped together, disappointing, spiteful mess. I am not saying that Archie Leech/Cary Grant was a saint. I'm sure he was a complex, flawed, fascinating human being like the rest of us, but writ large. None of this is explored with any honesty. It's just Dyan Cannon preening.
There are glaring historical inaccuracies, inexcusable for someone so public.
The acting is flat and well known people come off as caricatures. Nobody seems to be getting into the characters. They all seem to be just impersonating. This is a shame because so many are very talented, serious actors and they are totally wasted.
Prime has dropped only the first two episodes. I think I will give the next two a pass.
Never Saw It Coming (2018)
Expected Film Noir. Got Comedy
Believe in psychics. Don't believe in psychics. That's not important with this movie. She's a fake and makes not bones about it. As a result, I don't care much about the main character, although her acting wasn't as bad as the rest of the cast. They may have been able to deliver better performances if they were told whether they were making an absurd comedy or a psychological thriller. Even the background music didn't fit. Either way, they missed the mark completely.
The script was ludicrous. For example, a seasoned detective spills the whole investigation to a key "person of interest" and takes her to the crime scene with the body still lying there!
I gave it one star for at least making an effort and another for reminding me of the old trick of hiding money at the bottom of frozen leftovers.
The Lie (2018)
Testament to stupid parenting but competent acting
Parents lie to cover up their daughter's alleged crime by making one bad, stupid decision after another. It is hard to believe the parents have the intelligence to be as successful as they are meant to be and not quickly clear up the situation.
(Spoiler coming here.) If they wanted to cover things up they simply could have told the daughter to say, Brittany and she were goofing around in the snow, she slipped and fell in the river. I grew up where this was filmed. It happens. But then there wouldn't be a story. The plot twist at the end was interesting, but like the rest of the plot, needed development.
What kept me with this film was the quality acting. It was a good portrayal of divorced parents who have only their deep love of their child keeping them together, and of a teenager who, while wanting to be grown up also wants the family she had when she was little. This is why I gave it as many stars as I did.
