The Batman (2022)
9/10
Outstanding
2 March 2022
So much to love and enjoy in this film. The style of filming (shots/angles, cinematography, plot) made this film so unique and not just like another copy and paste superhero film I loved how they tested the PG-13 ratings limits to the max, and really proved that these kind of gritty dark themed films don't always have to be rated R. The score was incredible. Added so much power and emotion to many scenes, will definitely be playing the soundtrack on my headphones. The runtime may be an issue for some viewers, but personally I loved it. It gives us much more time to see more characters in depth and doesn't rush the plot. Some scenes were very intense and made me feel so nervous or scared for something to happen. Suspense was used perfectly. The plot I thought was great. It's finally a crime detective themed Batman film. The themes are dark and nerve racking, dialogue is intense, cinematography sets the mood perfectly and the characters are written and casted perfectly. Highly recommend seeing it.

Rare for a horror franchise to still have great films as they go on
12 January 2022
I had no expectations for this at all, had only seen the trailer once. I was highly entertained and satisfied with the continuous self aware meta humour that this franchise has. And the film is written so well the self awareness works perfectly. It still sticks to the same tropes, story, characters and set ups for kills, but slightly changed it so at times we are given something new and unexpected. Obviously the story was the same, but it was still fun in the cinema with the other audience members guessing who was behind the ghostface mask. So many Easter eggs to previous films, and many references to more recent horror films which was great to see. Highly recommend seeing this, long time fans of the franchise should enjoy this. Great theatre experience, make sure you see it with a good crowd!

Eternals (2021)
6/10
Hit and miss
3 November 2021
Clearly this film is taking a different approach than what we normally see in a MCU film. The themes are much more dark and carry more emotional weight with them. Chloe Zhao's direction while I thought was great in this film and kept to her style, I just don't think it might fit in the MCU thought. It seems out of place almost because of how different this story is delivered. The story was also a bit messy I thought, with the time jumps going back and forward making it confusing to tie loose ends. And it was also a weak story might I add, because I felt that there wasn't much excitement happening in the film, especially during the second act. There wasn't much development with many of the eternals, as it's too hard for a 2 1/2 hour film to develop 10+ characters deep enough for audiences to feel some sort of emotion towards them. Performances and visuals were stunning though, very good looking film on the big screen. Dolby atmos surround sound delivers also adding immersive experience while watching. The action was a bit light I thought, but the scenes we get are again great visually and choreographed well. The final battle was a bit underwhelming I thought also. It would of worked better as a TV series maybe, but then the visual aspects would be under appreciated if seen on a TV and not a giant imax screen. But this film still adds more clues as to what may happen in the future of the MCU.

Standard repetitive storyline, but the concepts are creative and fresh
17 September 2021
Right from the start I realised that the plot structure and storyline was very standard and repetitive. It's seen in many other action/superhero films. But as the action kicked in, I was still invested. It's a very fast paced movie with some new action sequences we haven't seen in the mcu yet, as well as some good comedic moments. The choreography for the action is one of the best I've seen in a long time. Very long cuts show all the action without quick cuts after every move someone takes. It's also a very beautiful film I thought in terms of scenery and colours. Music was also great, epic score and some killer songs. Definitely check out the soundtrack. But as the film entered its long third act, the ending was very underwhelming. We are being thrown at with so much stuff in a short period of time, so the reveals of some things and actions aren't as interesting as they should of been. But the film has opened up even more possibilities for what's to come in the mcu timeline, so make sure to stay for those credits scenes. But even someone who hasn't seen any or a few mcu films can watch this as it's a good standalone film. They may not understand a few things that characters talk about regarding previous events but I could assume that they'd still be invested. Overall, a solid entry for our new character Shang-Chi in the mcu, as well as having some awesome action, funny moments and eye popping miss en scene.

Funny, fun and exciting
15 August 2021
This has an amazing script, having a good investing story while still being very comedic. Ryan Reynolds is perfect for this role, and the other cast members do great. This movie's comedy is one of the best I've seen in a while. It offends generic stereotypes for video game users in hilarious ways and pleases many fans of different games and pop culture related things, while still entertaining a wider audience who may not play video games often. The story was engaging, only issue with me was the reason behind Guy's code being broken (bit cliche) but still it was enjoyable. Action was amazing on the big screen, so glad this is a theatre exclusive for now, I don't think you'd appreciate the action and sound on a tv but when you watch on the big screen, it is more enjoyable and engaging. Awesome movie, highly recommend!

So many emotions in one movie, but it works amazingly
6 August 2021
Massive improvement to the first one. I can imagine the style of this being how David Ayer originally wanted his film to be. But James Gunn has done an impressive job. Throwing so much at us all at one, action, gore, comedy, drama, and it all works together perfectly. Acting is great. Margot Robbie again does a stellar performance as Harley Quinn, and all the newcomers add great moments in the film. It is worth seeing in a theatre if possible, you'll enjoy the action much more and the comedy is great with a crowd. Definitely recommend, even if your not a big comic book fan or haven't seen previous DCEU movies, it's a film that can appeal to a wide audience.

Great cast, action & comedic bits, but a stale plot
30 July 2021
Perfect duo Dwayne and Emily, they were perfect for these roles and bought many comedic moments to the film. The action was great, well worth experiencing this on the big screen as I did. Only issue was the plot is very repetitive as in they need to find something that will help everyone etc, we've seen it in heaps of other films, so nothing special plot wise. I did see many resemblances to films such as raiders of the lost ark and the first pirates of the Caribbean film, which were great films to base ideas off of for this film around many aspects such as the adventure side of the film and the comedy. Overall it was an exciting and funny big screen adventure.

Slow start, but stepped up eventually for a great big screen return
7 July 2021
The atmosphere in the cinema was great, everyone was ready to see some marvel action on the big screen after a 2 year absence. The film does drag a bit in the beginning I felt, but one scene eventually kicks off and the film shifts to drive. Finally we get some back story to Natasha, the story was obviously the core and mostly it was a throughly entertainment and in depth story about her family and past. Action as usual was great, and the use of sound in the Dolby atmos theatre was superb. Comedic moments were great in the film, audience had great reactions. The music was great as well. One particular choice of song stood out for me. (Watch and you'll find out I hope) I liked how you are able to connect to the characters more since it's a more grounded film. It's essentially a spy espionage film in a very well known universe. Only other issue I had with the film was the villain, wasn't very convincing and I would say opposed to being frightened for Natasha because of the villain. Great return for the big screen!

Similar plot, but still a simple one full of creativity and energy
2 July 2021
I like the pacing of this film, it's fast and doesn't drag with too much back story of other characters which doesn't help proceed the present time story. The production design is very creative, would never of thought of some of the ideas and layouts that I saw in the film. The plot is somewhat similar to the first film, but still it was an enjoyable story. The energy is high in this film, you can feel the intensity that the characters are feeling in certain situations, which makes the experience enjoyable, especially on the big screen. Overall, good sequel with creative use of production design.

Pumping with energy, a few issues with some songs though
26 June 2021
Very surprisingly enjoyable musical. Bright and interesting characters and up beat songs. This was a great experience in the theatre, Dolby atmos supported the music immensely and the crowd really enjoyed the songs and some comedic lines in the film. Production design was amazing, brightly colourful set pieces and detailed interiors. Plot was a bit off centre at points, but it was simple and enjoyable. Sound mixing was a bit off at times. Sometimes the music and the bass was overpowering the lyrics, but I still listened to the soundtrack after seeing the film.

The only issue I had with the film was some of the songs didn't fit with the plot in my opinion. They may of been great songs, but they just didn't fit the theme or the plot.

If you get the chance to experience it in cinema I highly recommend it to experience the music and production design in the best way possible.

Awful writing
19 June 2021
We do not need this movie as well as Fast 8. This movie was just unnecessary, I could not care less about what happened to the characters. The writing for the characters were so shallow, if something happened which was somewhat intense or risk taking, I could not care about what would a happen to them because there was no depth to the characters. The addition of Doms brother was so useless and made no addition to the story or characters in my opinion. He didn't seem like the threat the trailers made him out to be and that was also due to the ending The ending was very predicative, so I just got so tired of the movie about 3/4 of the way in. The series should of just ended with 7. Not because that Paul walker had passed away but because the way the 7th film ended was perfect for a series. The addition of 8 and 9 made no impact to the characters and their lives at all. Only things I enjoyed were a few action scenes and cinematography was good in some scenes as well. Overall, just bad, forgettable but predicable writing with bad character development and a dragging story.

Mindless action comedy
11 June 2021
Don't focus too hard on this film, just relax and have fun watching it. Some jokes may not hit, but the ones that do are good. The action is great on the big screen.

The story is very repetitive and predictable, so my rating is merely from the action, comedy and preferably the two leads of Samuel L Jackson and Salma Hayek. The new characters as well as the villan we've all seen before in every spy comedy movie ever, so that was a bit tiresome. Overall if you just want pure entertainment, this is the film to watch.

The originality is gone
4 June 2021
When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was a good idea that they expanded the setting so that it wasn't just a haunted house kind of setting. But after the film ended, oh how that was a mistake. The story introduces us to too many characters who we know nothing about and gives us too many plot holes that are just left unanswered. The films genre was more of a crime thriller than a horror to be honest film lacked in scares which lost the films horror genre/ theme. The change in genre didn't suit me personally as I expected this film to live up to the tension and scares shown in the first two films. The scares that we're in the film were bad. I barely jumped at any of them or felt nervous when they happened. It just wasn't a horror movie I felt. The film is essentially an info dump and doesn't answer any questions to why were given the information. The ending was also very weak, unlike the first two films which actually had a scary finale, this one just lacked in scares and turned more slasher almost at times. Because of the films plot being more crime focused, I saw many tropes from other films in this film, which made the film lack in originality. The other two films were unique as they hadn't been done before (or at least done but not in the quality as the conjuring has), so this film feels just as a reboot to any crime/drama/thriller story we've all seen multiple times. The trailer was misleading, and it also showed many of the main scares and some scenes that were somewhat important to the plot, so the reveal of these scenes and story moments weren't as exciting as if we'd never seen them in a trailer before. Only thing I really enjoyed was Ed and Lorraine Warren's actors/actresses, they still played their characters very well. Overall, weakest of the trilogy, but better than some of the spin-offs we've been given. Really wanted to like this film as I was a fan of the first two, but sadly I was very disappointed.

Fresh new ideas, perfect cast, great soundtrack and costumes
29 May 2021
This film surprised me very much. I'd only seen the trailer once and barely thought about it but I was still interested in seeing it and Im glad to say that this film was great. The idea of actually letting the villan be bad and not turn good is rare for Disney films, so the fact that they continued the theme of relentless and evil made me enjoy the story more. The cast is just perfect. Emma Stone is unrecognisable in some scenes and Emma Thompson almost mirrors her in some scenes. They both blend beautifully in either dramatic intense scenes or even some unexpected comedic scenes. The soundtrack is great, the film doesn't need to rely on a background score very often since songs set the mood for the scene and it's done great. The story overall is engaging as well. Some can relate many of the films themes, plot points and characters to The Devil Wears Prada and 2019's Joker and you can definitely see that in this film. The blend of the two films put into a live action Disney villan film worked very well. The setting is unique as well and the costume design is eye popping and mesmerising. Highly recommend seeing this film, hopefully on the big screen if possible but if your only option is Disney+, I'd still pay the extra fee to see it with everyone.

Great sequel, amazing cinema experience
27 May 2021
Best cinema experience I've had in a while. A near full house with a near silent crowd (some loud eaters heh). Some may not of enjoyed the lack of plot (as in not much happens) and the ending, but I just see this film as a continuation of the story (as it's obvious there will be a third). You have to remember that it's right after the ending of the first one so the setting and time is the exact same, I think some people didn't get that. Millicent Simmonds shines in this film and Cillian Murphy alongside her only makes it better. Emily Blunt is still great but steps down this time and let's Millicent take the spotlight and she uses it perfectly. I didn't find the sequel as scary as the first film, but the scenes that had some jump scares in them were executed very well. Replacing the lack of scares in this film are big action pieces, which are great on the big screen, but I would of preferred more silent scenes where sound is used as a jump scare element rather than big explosions and loud sounds, but the action was still intense. Again, the sound design is perfect, especially when we're through Regans perspective and sound is cut out completely. Favourite scene was definitely the opening, big action scenes and a good origin to how the world is how it is. The only thing that bugged me was the theme of family has died down. It's now become 'every man for himself' almost, but we get a few moments that revolve around the theme of family, but you can see Regan and Marcus trying to be like their father during the film and trying to lead the family to safety. Highly recommend seeing this film, even if horror is not your taste you can appreciate the sound and production design.

Unique story that stands out and leaves you feeling astounded
29 April 2021
The story could of just been someone starts losing their hearing, but incorporating the characters life around Music adds more depth and effect to the story and characters. I thought Best Actor for 2021 Oscars should of gone to Riz Ahmed as he perfectly captured the frustration and pain he feels when he's trying to communicate without the ability to hear. I can't get over the story, it's just so different and unseen in my opinion. The sound mixing was great as well, sounds great on a quality sound bar I have with my TV. Highly recommended film for anyone. Some could relate to the story but maybe not the fact that the main character is deaf, they could have another disability and their life may reflect the story and pathway that Riz's character follows in the film.

Powerful acting
29 April 2021
If it wasn't for Daniel Kaluuya, I don't think this film would have been successful. He carried so much power and energy to the film, especially in the "I am a revolutionary" scene. You'd think it was just a protest that someone recorded and not acting. I didn't care if the sorry wasn't historically actuate, I was still engaged and interested what would happen next as scenes progressed.

Full of heart
29 April 2021
Very relatable characters and story is what makes this film great. Audience can connect a lot with what is happening on screen and become emotionally engaged with it. The writing was great, perfect mix of comedic lines and dramatic arguments. The story is simple but this film looks more in depths of many elements to the family's choice of moving to a new place to start a farm.

Simple but powerful
29 April 2021
This film has a simple story just following a man with dementia and how the people around him are affected by it. The acting and screenplay is what makes this film and this showed with the Oscar wins. Hopkins plays a simple character suffering with dementia and captures the struggle he has when people don't believe what he sees with his illness. Production was great as well. I was able to stay engaged even with the film being in one setting (mostly). Do watch this film, some may be able to relate to the story as well.

More of a documentary than a film
29 April 2021
I can see why people are giving this film a low rating probably because of the films direction. It's not a normal film in terms of structure. But I didn't mind this and I thought it worked beautifully for this film. It felt like a documentary of Fern as we follow her life as a Nomad. It's as if McDormand isn't even acting, she's just living her life and I love the use of real nomads which makes the story more raw and real. Cinematography was amazing as well. The film overall was just so simple but powerful.

an ok movie with great marketing
24 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
. . . . . . The marketing was great it made us all believe so well that "one will fall" even though none of them fall (as in die) If it wasn't for the Batman v superman like ending with the story just ignoring what vs actually means, then maybe I would of liked the film. I thought overall it was ok, some good action, even though there was only two Godzilla vs Kong scenes, really liked Brian Tyree Hendry in this, the story had no idea where it was going. it was too centred around Kong and this is probably because it has no sequel so it wasn't very even the screen time between the two characters that "vs" eachother in the film. overall just mindless action with a messy story and some rememberable characters and moments.

b i g improvement
18 March 2021
I wasn't a fan of the 2017 version of the film, had lots of issues with it. But with this version I was so invested. Even with the 4 hour runtime and the letterbox format, I wasn't bored by it at all. So many elements of the film made this version way better. The stakes are higher with much better written villans. In the last film I hated how they focused on one family and in this one they just take them out and now the consequences will affect the whole world. The screenplay was a huge improvement and was more serious and I guess appropriate in terms of jokes and confrontation between characters. The story was more engaging and intense. The characters were written much better and I cared about them a lot more because of the stakes that were on the line for each character. Character development was a massive improvement, lots more back story for characters without stand alone films like cyborg and flash, wasn't just a quick explanation as in the theatrical cut, we actually get decent flashback scenes with in depth development for these characters. The score was great but that Amazon music got to me after a while. The action was much better, thanks to the R rating allowing more gore which I enjoyed. The colours were a big improvement, looked more realistic with the colours being darker and not as bring and fake looking as the previous version. Most of the cgi was a big improvement, especially Henry's moustache heh, some choppy cgi in some action scenes but didn't affect the film overall. I would of loved to see this in the cinema for the big screen and sound experience, but it still looked and sounded great at home.

Original storytelling at its peak, just a perfect film
9 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There have been a very few amount of films in the past year that I can remember so vividly because of so many things suck as story telling, characters & acting, music and costumes etc. This film perfects so many aspects. Carrey Mulligan gives us a performance of mixed genres. Comedy, thriller, drama, romance, she does it all and keeps the audience hooked, even when she's not on screen but is mentioned or seen in a different way. The plot has aspects that have been seen before, but overall it's an original story which surprised the whole audience in the cinema. The ending in my opinion made the film. For the audience to stay so engaged and focused in the film without its leading character for about 15 minutes just shows that the story works perfectly. The theme of revenge is one of my favourites, especially in kill bill, which I got some feels and vibes from that film in Promising young woman. The music was great as well, mixing some well known songs with a blend of dramatic beats made for some repeatable streams on the official playlist. I hope this film is recognised during award season. For me (a 17 year old guy) to love a film that's intended towards women older than me, shows how this film could please and entertain a wide audience range. The strong direction, unique script and strong lead hopefully wins awards at the oscars or golden globes.
