The Mandalorian (2019)
8/10 Model for Comparison
A series that plays within the rules of established canon. It doesn't seek to reinvent the wheel, it respects the IP.
Jon Favreau is arguably Star Wars' best live action writer working to date.
Expanding on a culture little known to audiences, Jon uses solid world building with well crafted character arcs to delve into the history of Mandalore, its warriors and the galaxy (post Ep. VI) at large. These are characters we are asked to invest in, and the pay off is oft rewarded.
Grogu continues to provide the comic relief. Legitimately though, not forced like a certain Gungan I could mention.
The costume design, set construction, stunt coordination, practical effects, prosthetics and animation are on par with any theatrical production.
The Mandalorian is a worthy entry to the growing-often mishandled- universe.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)
8/10 Emotionally resonant
Top drawer animation with storylines that rival the very best the franchise has to offer.
Gripping and engaging, the Bad Batch is a worthy successor to the Clone Wars and a notable entry in the franchise.
With a plot centred on propelling the narrative of Palpatine's fledgling Empire, fans will find much to enjoy as we are shown the paradigm shift from the perspective of many worlds we are familiar with.
It's a difficult transition from the Clones point of view, as they find themselves having done their duty and a changing world that no longer requires their services.
Poignant and powerful are the few episodes dealing with this specifically.
Bravo.
Sound of Freedom (2023)
"The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller"
A hard and uncomfortable watch. A world we may all be aware of, but one which we don't want to think about. Tim Ballard's inspirational heroism is on full display, convincingly portrayed by Jim Caviezel. Jim delivers a quiet performance, often conveying much through his eyes alone.
It's a moving film that will definitely take you through the gamut of emotions.
You will be disgusted, you will feel helpless and infuriated, but you will be lifted, encouraged and inspired. The message here is powerful. "Gods children are not for sale".
"When God speaks you you, you listen"
An incredible true story of heroism and hope.
Light up the darkness.
