Franklin (2024)
America fishing for guns and culture
This is a reconstitution of the troubled times when America needed help from Europe against England. And more than that: it is an on-spot Apple bet, a great experience, with location "extravaganza", great costume reconstitution, a few good actors, and more. A superficial incursion in manners and languages of those times was tried and so we have an "epoque-drama" that is very interesting and leaves us wanting more. Franklin deals with a task to help his fellow Americans bring money and guns to the American cause. But it is in general a great chance to see America as a character in a different type of geopolitical drama. Also, it is enough to send a mainstream streamer to run away - American streamers will not like having French people speak French. ["Vide" Shogun for a great History reconstitution. But look, Portuguese in Shogun also is not spoken - they opted for English.] {My favorite model is "Pachinko" and the subtitle scheme they have found.} Resuming, it's a detailed flix, that lacks depth and fails to bring the real danger that Americans were confronted with. Is this a french-fries-friendly series? Well, no. But french fries are also not French, right? You'll need to have a cultural background to watch this.
Scavengers Reign (2023)
In love with this Baffling Space Travel concept
The universe in "Scavengers" materializes a world similar to Earth. But the plants are so dangerous and incredibly creative that humans use them in ways that we can't even explain. The animals are incredibly strange - only if you see this series you can understand what I mean. Inside this Science Fiction futuristic galore space travel, stands the human race, with problems, aspirations, desire. One should expect all those things to go away in the face of all the beauty and danger, but humans keep their characteristics everywhere. And so we step into this world and soon we have to face a whole myriad of relations and consequences, new challenges and new perspectives for men and women. This breakthrough series brings us paths to approach a baffling and bizarre future. We want more.
After Everything (2023)
Chick movie with great scenery in Lisbon
Lisbon is the only thing to remember from this movie. Unless you really need a softporn flick... This one is charged with moments that are inexpressive and senseless if it wasn't for the actors. The dialog is many times in a hurry and doesn't bother to make sense or question what is really happening. The characters are caricatures of ideas we have about people. The drunk English tourist that drowns sorrows in the Algarve whiskey, the sensual burnet that dreams of buying a house near the sea, the writer that can afford to travel the world on an advance payment for his next book... All these things keep returning to movies but really don't mean anything. Pop romance should have a restyling. The good things from this one are the sets, the sun and the streets. Great cinematography and colors.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Multiverse yourself to death
Is time precious to you? Forget this movie has ever existed, at least in this Dimension. In the Oscar Dimension, this was good for many things: for trying to bring a difficult concept out of the Marvel Universe, to explore a nonsense argument that in the future can be used for other types of content, to bring movies closer to a gaming experience and break the barrier... If you simply are a human movie watcher, this is too far from being what you need and want. Your body would have to adapt to even look into the details that are present. A good "montage guy" could make 1 year of movies from the material these guys must have recorded. If this is a new trend, this will not be a Green Choice or Eco Award. For sure.
Reacher (2022)
David Carradine on Steroids
David Carradine must roll over in his grave in Bangkok when he sees this series on DeadPrime. For everyone who was counting on a great second season, here is a painful Reacher that drags on without any awareness that it could be a memorable series. To support that upper body, a 1.90m man would need to eat like an ox, train for more than 3 hours, and have a stable life. A person who walks miles on foot and is homeless has no chance of having a body like that. Many ideas here show us that there should be any type of general schooling on writers and a culture test before doing this job: the concept doesn't fit with the various stereotypes attached to Reacher. It's not possible to get past the second episode, even if you like its character. The first season was intriguing, though.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Science fiction with a twist of genius.
The most interesting angle was found by Sam Esmail for this thriller: an intelligent labyrinth of feelings that addresses today's problems with a caricature of the Americans. There are influences of Haneke, and Hitchcock, but also a mix of Woodie Allen and science fiction. The sound set is great and the camera angles are going to make this a cult cut. This is not a movie to watch with popcorn. Bellow the drama, the most important thing to note is how people are dealing with the tragedy, while we understand the roots of the situation. The end is unexpected and great: while the world explodes, a kid's wish is to watch series - a picture of kids today. This is a movie that makes you think, and that's not for the average Joe.
Rabo de Peixe (2023)
Great job! We want more
Imagine half a ton of cocaine washing ashore on the most remote island in Europe. The people from the island are the poorest and don't even know the drug. If this came to reveal as a tragedy for them, it was also a divine comedy - and it really happened in 2001, in one of the Azores islands. This place is called Rabo de Peixe, which in Portuguese means something like "Fish Ass". The series finds a funny and strange side, which reveals several layers of feelings through apparently comic characters while showing several ways of looking at this problem. This ends up being a case study of how external factors completely transform a community.
