Ark: The Animated Series (2024)
trying to ride other's waves
Tanned skin, blue eyes, bob hair cut, green earthy outfit. Korra in the earth kingdom fighting pits. Literal rip off, In a similar style. Which tells me either they are def-toned, or clueless .... or did it intentionally to ride someone else's wave. Not sure which is worst.
Desperate to be something it is not. ATLAB (the original) was not trying to be something, it was just is. A heavily researched concept that almost did not leave any leaf upturned from the actual history it was inspired by. It was what I would call a PHD level project that inspired everyone involved to match the level of emotion and care that went into the story telling.
This feels forced. The music is forced, the lines feels forced, the acting feels like reading the lines but not actually living the lines or being the characters. Many of them "big names" were delivering the lines like they are reading the news.
The lore it self dose not know what it is.
If its science fiction then there was not much research that went into it.
If it's historical then there was not much searcher that went into it.
If it sociological then there was not much research that went into it.
Big names in the genera dose not equivalent good performance. And I bet you that everyone was scared to say, do it again, do it better.
Copping homework while missing the whole point. Focusing on all the wrong things.
Bucchigiri?! (2024)
When you know you know
First I would like to start by saying that it is unfair to compare this show to the past movie with the same title. The "thug" that existed back then dose not exist in this day and age. They went extinct about 2 years ago. This Show is defiantly not made for a western audience and is more a love letter to the east and Asia. For thousands of years influence that was not western happened through art, story telling, creativity and philosophy. It was not as loud as the western influence but defiantly had a equivalent mark. Many of the known stories from the "Alf lela wo lela" thousand and one night that are shared across the east and Asia are are stories inspired by travels across that side of the world, with many Chinese eastern influence. Where in in ancient times they exchanged students and education. One of the biggest stories that captured the world as a whole is the lour of the wish granting Jin. And in this Anime it is sharing a public school that is neglected in the poorer side of town that has kids that been influenced by a eclectic sources and noise, you see them eat Chinese food and kabab and falafel which, most japanned people view as high in fat and not clean. Which tells me that not all the kids are of Japanese decent. There is a lot to say about this show and I love it's eclectic mess, that is reflecting a sliver of eastern reality.
Also the Tatoos on the Jin bodies are saying,
Alf: which means thousand, or the first letter in both Arabic and Hebrew. Many believe that its the first letter ever written.
Lelah: which mean night.
The main character: Ara Jin, "Arabic Jin"
The Walking Dead: Rest in Peace (2022)
unforgivable
Unforgivable. To see the cushy landing of Rosita supposed falling on her back on asphalt. This mistake would have never been done under the old directing. Are you blind. Ran out of money to edit and darken the fluff of her soft landing? Or wasted it on all the witchy zombies? I hate to say it but you should have killed the charterer. That was a stupid mistake. Trying to recreate moments that were done so much better and with the lowest of budgets. Unforgivable. To allow the "film magic" to be stripped away. You killed a legacy. Killing a main is was made all of the charterer development in the show. Killing a background character is what use to happen before TWD. They changed that and made the stakes real, for the story and the viewers. What you just did made me root for the zombies.
Kusuriya no hitorigoto (2023)
Th writing
One of my favorite shows of 2023, it's Asian history drama soap opera without the christian guilt. With the lead being pragmatist thinker in that system, telling us the truth behind the glamor. The opening title alone takes me back to the golden age of Anime, its simple, focusing on a great song and lyrics, grateful I was introduced to the singer and band who made a lighthearted Music video in contract to the heavy subjects in the anime's writing that came out before the video. The Anime is definitely story driven but the animation is inspired by the writing that you can see the love in all aspects and taking new ventures in simple attention to detail which you don't expect in a history drama/ comedy, Example is the hand wave that Mawmaw to one of the lady's in waiting. It was simple but effective detail, to humanize the people that lived in such strict places. The wave was made as if the were two girls at that age in a food court saying see you later, while being technically servants. The CGI is not great with the extras walking in the back but the story and writing makes not care.
Reservation Dogs: House Made of Bongs (2023)
Weird shift in quality
I know the inspiration was to make like low quality film, but the writing was hard to digest, also the kids look like they have never done psychedelics in their lives to play it, the all look like nice kids pretending, badly. Not even in an old movie coming of age way. Its cool to see how many are interested to join the venture but I wish they were more prepped to keep the same high level of quality of the show. Its one episode, so I am still a fan waiting to go back to our main charterers. I love the show, wish they bring the spirit guide back, a lot of talent and over all creative collaboration of all parts creativity. It is done right overall, This one its the writing and the acting for me. The school coach was hot though.
Golden Kamuy (2018)
Detailed and researched
This show reflects how societies have been effected by the western concept of purity that is highly ruled by organized religion that saw other cultures as underclass, barbaric and unreformed. People who used "dirty" language did not see the world in the same way the purists did. Yet managed to survive and reach similar conclusions about human nature and philosophy without help from the "refined and educated" they just labeled it differently. This change that swept the world to make us all subjects of capitalism killed off so much history, culture and actual knowledge about the world from different perspectives, things that greedy capitalists later on stole and did not credit the people who invented them, from people who adapted in the harshest conditions to reach that kind of knowledge. On top of that it gives you an insight to human psychology answering why do people follow cretin paths or leaders, how psychopaths had and still have a role in society and are probably targeted to be used as weapons in made up wars in the battle for power, how people with noble intentions get caught up to fight against such mental wars, where at the end you end up with two diabolical brains moving people like chess pieces, some unknowingly and some are welling participants. There is something for everyone in this show. It reflects history without pandering. It's so heavily detailed and researched while still managing to stay entertaining and captivating.100% needed and groundbreaking. Also some of the men are incredibly hot, showing homoerotic undertone to real relationships among men in history who did not identify as homosexuals yet still had the experiences and feelings.
Disenchantment (2018)
Autistic and I love it
First I want the low reviews to understand that this is a show that has so many people working on it, the big names associated did not direct or write the episodes. This is a new generation taking over the show. It's a stand-alone show that had to depend on perfecting the storytelling and not filling the space and script with paid ads.
Bean, Elfo, Luci, Zog, Derek and Una as characters are a reflection of so many people who feel that their destiny was already written, all go through transformations and character development. The "slow pace" which is not slow all the time was intentional. The calming colors were intentional, and the focus on dreams was intentional.
I guess this is the kind of show that if you don't get it you just don't.
I'm Autistic and this show is my go-to for comfort. I easily watched it over 100 times already. It's a true labor of creative minds combining to create beautiful art. I would also would recommend it as a road map for writing, directing, comedic timing, character, and sound design, and animation. I'm sure I'm missing so many other parts. This show teaches a lot. Even with learning what words sounds funnier in a short joke gag like the "me flavored water guy" where for me at least you can tell how kneeeees sounded funnier than buttocks just because of delivery and the tone of the words and I think because one has more syllables than the other. I love this show so much that I am not sure if Derek having three fingers in the Dankmire episode was a mistake or intentional because it gives you that nostalgic feeling of old 2D animation where mistakes happen. The seamless 2D + 3D magic. The backgrounds and environment were created by really talented people. The animation has such beautiful small details that bring the characters to life that if you are a fan of animation you would really appreciate it. I could keep going, but I am watching it now and going back to it. Everything about it is calming. Can't recommend it enough. If you are autistic, give it a chance. Can't wait for more seasons.
Sweet Tooth: Out of the Deep Woods (2021)
Disturbing the flow
Season two. Seems like this show has ran into the same problem that many shows deal with going from one season to another where the believe that things are not set in stone after setting them in stone. Where original choices are abandoned and changed thinking that most viewers would not care. Which might be true. Or maybe the team working on the project changed? Smells like many cooks in the kitchen with out a clear direction of someone leading the production. It feels like many choices were an after thought in the second season. Which wouldn't be a problem if they didn't compromise the main choices and the changes were miner, but changing the kids and their designs from one cliff hanger to the first episode of the second season are huge changes, which disturbs the flow and make me focus on that aspect, looking for all the changes they made. Which ruins the fantasy and makes the show less enjoyable.
Hello Tomorrow! (2023)
Not bad but not greate
I know a show is not a good show by the simple fact that it did not grab attention, where usually you wanted it to happen in the first few episodes, also some things do not make sense, because technology and human behavior developments happen simultaneously. It seems far fetched to have everyone in a 1950 American mentality with futuristic tech all around, a group I would understand, but the whole made up world, that dose not make sense. It would have worked if it was done in the 70s, 80s, or maybe the 90s. But in 2023 it is a stretch you are asking us to ignore a lot. I have said this before, if this was a show about magic and mythical creatures anything is possible. But it is not, it is based on reality or a possible one. The rest is not that convening to ignore this much.
Lightyear (2022)
Was done in a rush
It was done in a rush and for nonsensical reasons other than money.
Everything was wrong, from the start where they referenced the 90s then showed modern 3D. Clearly whoever is in charge does not even know the background of the main character. It wasn't a blank canvas for you to paint whatever to make it fit. You could have watched the series at least.
Why? Because a good concept was not the point.
No wonder everyone who made a big deal about it felt pointless after, it was not worth it.
"Marketing how to" make a mediocre movie get attention. Also, move some kids and finances through travel.
Create "controversy" for the children.
This Fool (2022)
Well written comedy
Well written comedy, which is rare these days. Many laugh out loud moments.
I think my favorite line of 2022 is,
"Stop crying fool, we're about to party"
The Legend of Vox Machina (2022)
Questionable writing
So it's inspired by D&D, I never played but I know enough from nerd culture to understand the concept and amazing job on the artwork and character design.
I'm finding it difficult to find reasons to like these characters, from the get-go you gave us this illusion of strong characters, from the way that they're designed and the way they behaved. But the more I watch, there's no substance. Some characters are extremely stereotypical, others are so boring you start to wonder why are they main characters.
A lot of the writing makes me think there is something that I'm missing or that I don't understand. Even when they were attacked where some of them seemed like they died, I did not care, I was not rooting for them or against them, just watching in boredom and indifference, so I blame the writing more than anything.
What kind of writing is this! Two slit throats one after the other, two spitting one after the other, and so many moments like that, where it loses its effect because of repetition of the same concept in the same episode or even sometimes in the next episode
And it's not that the characters are not likable, they are "Misfits". I love the concept of Misfits, but these are boring one dimensional misfits.
The Walking Dead: Rogue Element (2022)
Mediocre BS
You know when a show is ending, they start making cheesy themed episodes.
This is the "detective episode" next they will do fairies and pirates.
I'm very annoyed by a show I use to love.
Naomi (2022)
bad start
It's so bad it's cringe. The acting is not believable at all, everything feels forced and unnatural. The writing is so bad, it's the kind of writing that shows you a red ball while adding "this is a red ball" in the dialogue.
Louis C.K.: Sorry (2021)
not the best not the worst
A seven because it is him and like many I'm exited that he's back. He's using the trick where emphasizing certain words and repeating them a lot as a joke. Like repeating 9/11 and Zoo. I just think he's better than that.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Annunciate!!!!
For some reason, all the actors on the show choose to mumble their words. Or whispers of words that are new to us, So we need to understand what they're saying!
Young Sheldon (2017)
Great show
The only thing is that I'm re-watching the big bang theory and according to the original show Sheldon's father and mother fighting a lot while his dad George Cooper was a drunk who died by the time Sheldon was 14. Which is in two years right?
Pretty Smart (2021)
Meh
Osment is NBC and the rest is doing Nickelodeon.
She deserves a better situation.
Midnight Mass (2021)
enjoyble
Beautifully shot, awesome writing, if it wasn't boringly slow would be a 10.
American Crime Story: The President Kissed Me (2021)
it really good
The only thing that takes me out of the fantasy is that I don't buy Beanie Feldstein as Monica. She's a good actress but everyone was made to look like who they were playing. She dose not look like Monica back then at all. Not height, body, face THE NOSE ... nothing. Once again her acting is awesome but she's the only one that snaps me out of it, because we know what Monica looked like. They payed attention to everyone els looking perfect.
Q-Force (2021)
Disappointing
This is what happens when people who know nothing about animation try to create an animation show. There is no heart or love of animation in this. No connection between the characters and the voices.
This feels like, I had wine in my living room with friends and got drunk together and said "you know what would be funny?"
The out LGBTQ+ community in Hollywood is huge now and you choose Wanda Sykes with her very distinctive voice and one note acting, that you can't get over to actually see the character that she's playing, and you choose her to play a young person?!
THERE WAS NO LOVE FOR WHAT YOU CREATED.
If there was any love for the show you would have cared about the casting.
Putting a side the stereotypical 90s crap.
See (2019)
I like it ... But
I can't get over the huge plot hole when it comes to reading. After 500 years of blindness, one sighted kid is born and he alone was able to teach himself how to read? How? It took generations and like a hundred years and countless linguists to understand ancient alphabets and took them years to agree on what it means.
So this one child was able to decipher text and self teach himself how to read?
I grew up in a seeing plus reading world, and was severely dyslexic till I was 33. Took me years to heal.
The twins started at 12 then were 17, self taught and proficient in 5 YEARS. Are you kidding me?!
Another thing would be how clean and fresh some of the clothes are, in the real world a drop of blood or oil that sets is impossible to remove with F*ing laundry detergent. You can't smell it after it sets and stains. They are using primitive ways, all off the clothing should have not been intricately designed, dry cleaned and pressed.
Don't get me wrong, it is beautifully designed. Even the set. Those magnificently detailed huts, not for function but for aesthetic. Logic would dictate that a world of blind people would care more about function over aesthetic. Why would they spend all that time on something they can't benefit from on a functionality level. Who are they beautifully visually designing for?
For people who keep saying "it's a fantasy" it's not magic and dragons! It's based on reality or a possible reality.
My rating is because overall I am entertained and it is high-quality and a visual spectacle.
The L Word: Generation Q (2019)
time freez
So it's been 17 years and all of the original characters still have the same haircuts?
Stargirl (2020)
Green lantern crossing the line of BS
You can't change the concept of the Green Lantern to fit your story. It's been established with comics, TV shows, and movies. Since 1959. No green lantern ever inherits the ring and lantern from their parent. You are basing the show in 2020-2021 present time. Ignoring the connection to the green lantern core is just making up stuff and BS.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Team Alien
I'm rooting for the aliens, this how boring and uninteresting the writing is. Which proves that Actors are wasted to nothing without good writers.
