Pass the Water of Life....
3 March 2024
I loved the first film but sadly, for me, this film was just more of the same and flatter somehow.

I didn't feel the music and sound had the same impact as the first film - or maybe it wasn't as novel as when shown in the first film. I enjoyed the film on the whole, and was engaged but it felt rather empty somehow. The special effects were all very good but the setting and action just felt like a continuation of the last film (which of course it was) but it left me wanting more - despite the new characters. When it finished and the lights came up, everyone just sat there rather silent and it felt like we'd all been a bit lulled rather than having just watched something special. A shame as I've been looking forward to seeing this for ages. It also felt very much like this film series is just going to stretch on and on and on for years to come in order to cover the whole story and books. I will wait for them to be streamed next time rather than bothering to experience them in a cinema.

Nonsense
24 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Like so many have pointed out, this film tries to be more than it is. Derivative of so many better films it meanders along trying so hard to shock but ultimately it falls flat.

The killings: we get that he manipulated and killed the posh folk - so why does the film do this 'shock' reveal of him putting a nail in the tyre, drugging the bottle, sending an email, providing the razors .... It would have been more interesting to leave us wondering.

People died but where were the police investigators? A little too simplistic for artistic effect!

The film flip flops between drama, comedy, thriller - not being good at any of them.

I wanted to like the main actor but as the film progressed I found him less and less convincing and likeable. I have no problem with male nudity in films but even I was irritated by the last scene as it was just trying too hard to be like American Psycho or something...

Another recent poor movie to put on the wasted opportunity pile...

If you don't enjoy this film you have no soul
14 March 2023
I enjoyed this completely. Bella Ramsey shows a great range and talent in this film and was incredibly funny. I'd only known her from The Last of Us and enjoyed her performance in that - but it was great to see her be given free rein in this and really seem to have fun with her character. There are lots of little moments in this film which are cheeky funny and really sweet. I love the world they created and all the other actors were superb as well. I'd never heard of this film until I saw it - so I hope it gets more recognition. And I really want to see Bella Ramsey in more films and TV series in the future!

Enjoyable homage
27 February 2023
I really enjoyed this film. Harked back to good old fashioned horror from the days of video nasties. Growing up in the 80s I noticed lots of references to horror movies from days gone by:
  • Friday the 13th - in the way sex is featured throughout and the setting - the lake
  • Psycho - old woman motif, shower scene reference
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre / The Hills Have Eyes with the setting and various characters and feel
  • the Shining - one scene with a door and an axe
  • Evil Dead - cabin in the woods, basement
  • Suspiria - use of primary colours in one scene
The use of flashing edits (not sure what the technical name is) is interesting and feels a bit art house.

I didn't have high expectations for this but was interested and engaged throughout. Recommended for those who like a retro feel horror with a coherent plot.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)

Best Ep So Far
5 February 2023
Watching the first 2 episodes felt very similar to watching game play. Moving through an environment killing things before they kill you and finding things to help you survive. I wasn't really getting much out of it. I'd heard that the third episode was going to be good so hung in there to see what the fuss was about. I really wasn't expecting it to be a love story and bravo to the writers. All these shallow reviews saying it adds nothing to the story - what nonsense! It is a great story - part of the story of the world the show is forming. How dull it would be to just continue trudging on with the 2 central characters. This opens up on just one of the millions of lives changed by the predicament. So many have died but remarkably two people managed to find a measure of happiness within this desolate world. It made me think about how lives have been effected by wars - everything is blasted apart but sometimes there is hope. The brief reference to the mother and baby rounded up and killed hints at another side story that ended differently- they didn't get a chance- but at least these two men did...

This is good!
25 January 2023
This sums up why you need to treat these user reviews with caution as this is a thoroughly entertaining, funny and engaging show. There are excellent performances from the cast and the dialogue and story lines are good. Other user reviews seem to be done by people who have either not really watched it - or just casually watched - not letting it unfold at its own pass and getting involved with the characters or story lines. I also suspect that the viewing of this will be effected by what you bring to it yourself via your own life experiences etc. If I'd listened to the negative reviews here I would have never had the pleasure of enjoying this series. I thought both seasons were equally good - similar in some ways but also unique.

Well done - would love to go to another White Lotus branch - where to next time?

Great improvement
27 September 2022
I really like the new actresses and new characters. I can understand other people feeling attached to the previous actresses but I think the change makes sense and breathes new life into the proceedings. The story line is really interesting now. It took quite a for episodes for me to get into this show and I really like how they took the risk to change the actresses to show how they have matured through all the child birth and courtly scheming.

The rivalry with the various children is setting the show up for more conflicts in the future. I like the way the dragons were depicted in this episode too. It is starting to build more momentum now the characters have been more established. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Great film
21 September 2022
This really surprised me how it pulled me in and held my attention throughout. A shame they didn't do a sequel although I understand this was effected by boycotts of the film due to the author's ridiculous and hateful views on LGBT issues. Putting that aside I liked this film a lot.

I thought the special effects were great and the scenes of the training room were very reminiscent of a VR game of the Quest. I thought the main actor did a brilliant job as well as all the other actors. The alien creatures effects were beautiful. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.

I did not expect the ending and it was thought provoking and interesting.

Go with it
12 September 2022
Ignore the negative reviews on here. For me this is one of those films that evokes a different time and the messiness of life. Great performances throughout- I had no idea the whole HAIM family were involved! It had a great slow quirkiness with various events around the central characters- the structure is loose and you feel immersed in this world. I loved some of the outdoor long shots - they created 1973 perfectly. Great film. Perhaps the negative reviewers think all films need a clearly spelled out plot - this is the sort of film that allows light and space and air the just let it take you somewhere and play on memory and senses.

FANTASTIC POIGNANT PROFOUND
23 March 2022
Annoyed by the reviews putting this down. What planet are they all on?! 10 stars to this series. This is such a tender portrayal of his life and loves. There was much I did not know about him. The images bring his world to life and capture, with fleeting images, snippets and moments in time. A marvel of editing. I found this moving and hypnotic.

Wonderful.

Bad accent, long and ultimately boring
1 March 2022
I agree with other reviews - I loved Julia Garner in Ozark but in this I did not buy it. I don't think she was up to delivering this performance with this accent. It became a distraction. The writers tried to build up a sense of intrigue but I found I did not care about any of the characters. I really like Anna Chlumsky too! What interesting casting but let down by a dull, overlong, padded out script, poor directing and terrible voice coaching!

Good!
15 January 2022
Yes it may be slow for some people to watch in this fast paced world - but sometimes it's nice to ease into a story and enjoy the characters. What's the rush!

For me the acting was top notch. And I loved the range of international storylines- the Brit kids were very realistically depicted I thought - and I really wanted that bully to meet a nasty end!

I look forward to another season if it comes.

Brilliant
15 January 2022
I thought I'd add my 10 rating to the list. Brilliant script and brilliant performances- especially from Anthony Hopkins. He captures the full range of the character - going from confident, charming, proud and even cruel to child-like, desperate and confused. The impact on the father/daughter relationship is also sensitively depicted- showing the tragic impact of this disease. But what a moving use of film to actually put you in the mind of someone in the grip of Alzheimer's. A difficult moving watch and a great achievement.

Loved this - funny and scarily true. Meryl gives a scathing Trump impersonation.... Great performances all round from the great cast.

Highly recommended.

Enjoyed this so much. Took a while to get going but like Hill House it suddenly grips you. The main thing I loved was the writing, pacing and acting. Just so powerful and interesting.

Great film

This is a wonderful meditative movie filled with strange visuals and unanswered questions. I loved it. Relax and let it enfold you.

It ain't for those who are expecting the run of the mill Hollywood flick.

Warning: Spoilers
Very derivative of other better alien films. Once Pratt bonded with his daughter as she read her science encyclopaedia I knew she would inevitably turn up in the future (John Connor style). Borrowed from Independence Day: everyman character with military experience saves world. Blatant rip off of Alien space ship design complete with cockpit and pilots! Why send thousands of people back to be slaughtered by aliens as they try to use bullets to kill them? Perhaps the final thing the people from the future should have announced in that football stadium is: "...and by the way, bullets are not an effective way to kill them!" They could have spent 30 years coming up with a solution.

This barely kept me engaged - some of the scenes looked good. The aliens design was good - if similar to others... Something about these Hollywood films just being done by committee drains them of substance. I'm all for a big dumb blockbuster but you need to be made to care about the characters and not be distracted by plot holes....

Dreadful
12 June 2021
I did not like the main character. He played it so flat and dull. The love interest was not believable- I did not care. I liked the idea of the film but it was not executed in a clever or interesting way. The songs would not have been received in this way when delivered by this flat and uninteresting singer- I loved the Beatles songs and kept thinking about how important their context is to them being so famous and popular. Oh and Ed was terrible throughout.

Whatever it was trying to do did not work.

I enjoyed it!
17 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't expect to like this but found it engaging, eerie at times and the scene with the truck quite moving.

I read this book way back when it first came out. I loved the book and the scene when Gage dies has always stuck with me - the way it is mixed with a dream and the realisation it wasn't a dream. The way Stephen King depicted the horror of that sort of loss - I can imagine what it would be like waking up to the horror of the reality of losing a child.

I liked the decision to change it to Ellie coming back as she was able to provide a better performance than a toddler zombie which I think came across as quite unintentionally comical the first film. I liked the uneasy sense the father has as his daughter is not quite what she was meant to be. That bed scene was eerie...with them both lying there.

I loved the cat in this film and the way the cat came back and caused Ellie's death in a way.

I didn't like the bits with the disabled sister - portraying her as a monster felt wrong in the book and both films and I don't think it really added much.

When I first watched the first film I was disappointed but with this one I thought on the whole it worked better.

Bad format
11 March 2021
Alan Carr tries to lighten things with his humour as the designers work but suddenly it switches to a summoning to the office like it's The Apprentice. The judging is brutal and negative. There is little time spent on exploring what was good about the winning teams. The tone of this show does not work and it always ends on a sour awkward note with the loser being rejected and dispatched usually tearfully. Miserable show.

Loved it
12 February 2021
Sure there were times I wasn't exactly sure what was going on but what a film. A really fun ride. Great effects and likeable characters with interesting back stories. I loved the robot character - I really liked the material his head was made out of! Interesting multicultural cast and great world vision of the future with all the technology and gadgets. FUN ESCAPISM.

Miscast Ms Kidman...
31 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was intrigued to see this - the idea of Kidman wielding a machine gun interested me somehow. Sadly she was not convincing. The makeup (as many here have said) was a distraction. She looked like a zombie most of the time. Was she meant be be on Crystal meth? If so that was not clear at all. At one point when she was portraying a younger version of her character she had freckles that honestly looked like someone had plonked them over her face evenly spaced with a felt tip. The hair and makeup in this film were terrible. The relationship with her daughter was hollow - at various times she managed to get her daughter to meet her and then proceeded to not really say anything to her. If I was the daughter I'd leave too. What was she doing out in the snow? In the script the daughter refers to her childhood which she can't remember even though it wasn't that long ago - this just made me think that the character's backstories on the whole were not developed properly so you felt nothing for anyone. A real shame Nicole could not pull this off. As others have said - this was miscast - she was just not believable.
