The Godfather Part II (1974)
Masterpiece- a truly epic film
Often considered the greatest sequel ever made The Godfather 2 is an excellent film in its own right and an even better companion to the first Godfather. The Godfather Part II is a more ambitious production than the original since it attempts not only to tell a pair of completely disconnected stories, but to do so in parallel. The less time consuming of the two presents the early life of Vito Corleone (played by Robert DeNiro) in Sicily and New York, and shows how he came into power. The other tale picks up approximately a decade after the conclusion of The Godfather, and shows the means by which Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now secure in his position, attempts to expand the family empire into Las Vegas and Cuba. Few sequels have expanded upon the original with the faithfulness and detail of this one. The Godfather 2 is a masterpiece and should be a must watch for any serious cinema lover.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Scary zombie film from England
Zombies, when done correctly can scare like the best of monster movies. 28 Days Later is dark, the video quality is dubious (it was shot on digital video to curtail cost and provide a grittier look), and the subject matter is familiar. But the filmmakers counter these questionable qualities with solid performances, an intelligent script, and sure-handed direction. The result is a movie that kept me involved from start to finish. When Boyle wants to shock us, he has no trouble doing so. There's a little of George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) here. Several scenes in which the infected attack are genuinely creepy. One sequence in particular - in which Jim and Frank race to change a tire while a band of infected relentlessly approach - generates as much tension as any other 2003 motion picture. This is followed in short order by an effective character building sequence in which the protagonists enjoy a picnic while ruminating about what, if anything, the future might hold. Suddenly, Jim and Selena have become aware that the mantra of "just survive" is not enough.
Blood Diamond (2006)
Political movie with panache
Blood Diamond by Edward Zwick is a good political war film featuring Leonardo Di Caprio. Set in Sierra Leone and against the backdrop of the treacherous business of blood diamonds. A struggle between corporate greed and the need to be a moral individual with a title on your head is what the films roller coaster plot consists of. All the actors are excellent, especially Leo who is in top form. The cinematography is quite good and Zwick's direction is as crisp as its easy going. Although the subject matter may deter you off give this film a chance.
Legend (1985)
Pretty visuals
Legend was Ridley Scott's follow up to his most personal film Blade Runner. And it was the start of his "average" phase. Legend is a decent film- it looks astonishing Ill give it that. But the story is basic and Tom Cruise is simply adequate. Tim Curry as the bad guy actually completely steals the show but overall this is just an okay film filled with pretty visuals. If you want to watch a fantasy there are other better films. Unless you're a fan of Ridley Scott or Tom Cruise I think you can safely avoid this.
The Doors (1991)
Great musical biography film
Oliver Stone's The Door's is a biographical take on Jim Morrison and you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of faults here- Kilmer is literally the photo copy of the real Jim and Meg Ryan is adorable as his girlfriend. The film itself wasn't such a hit because, well to be frank it is vague and goes off on many tangents but this is a valiant effort to show a true rock star. Even if you aren't a fan of the Doors I suggest you check this one out.
Roxanne (1987)
Roxanne is a charming little gem
Roxanne starring Steve Martin and Daryll Hannah is a cute movie and should be more popular than it is. Shot in a picturesque small town (Nelson BC) which adds to the charm the film is about a Pinocchio nosed new town sheriff(or firefighter I am forgetting) Steve Martin who falls for the new beauty in town played by Hannah. It reeks of charm and reminds us how nice these types of low budget films were- sadly they aren't being made anymore. Go watch it if you can- It isn't a mindblower but a cute, charming film starring the legendary comedian at the height of his power.
