Storage Wars Canada (2013)
I really liked it but.....
I like some parts of the show but hate others. I really like the characters, especially Bogart. I think they were all fantastic!
I hate the tired format. Every show goes like this: 1) they bid on a locker that looks like it is full of trash, 2) they get annoyed at how much trash they have to sift through, 3) they find some mystery item that might be worth a lot of money, 4) they take it to a so-called expert who guesses what the item is worth on the retail market, 5) show ends. In every episode someone finds a hidden treasure.
I think the problem with this show isn't the general format, but rather the repetitiveness of it all. Every episode is formatted 100% the same. If they mixed it up and had episodes where no one found anything or one person bid really low but then scored a million dollars profit (or something wildly profitable) the show would be better. Also if they didn't spend 1/3 of each episode going to the so-called experts and rather focused on the locker clean-outs themselves, the show would be better.
The major problem with this show is how the so-called experts could put any actual retail value on the items in the first place. For example in one episode Cindy and Rick take a bunch of glass bowls to a hippie yoga guy, the kind of guy with a long beard and braided hair with flowers. The hippie gave them good news that they could sell the glass bowls for a nice profit but how the heck would he know that? Hippies are not economists and if he told them the truth that he had no qualifications whatsoever to judge the value of a glass bowl and they ought to compare it to similar items on Amazon, then the show would be better..... but I guess telling people to use common sense and look for other similar items online would not make for great television.
In another episode Roy finds what looks like sterling silver that would belong as part of a medieval costume. OK I can believe that, but what I cannot believe is that he decided to drive far out of his way to a local role-playing costumed event in the middle of the woods on a snowy winter day. Anyone with common sense would have taken the silver to a pawn shop or jewelry store and had it assessed for quality and purity. Then they would have tried to sell it to one of those people that melts fine metals down as scrap..... but I guess showing teenagers in medieval costumes romping about in the snow is more entertaining than common sense.
Finally what bothers me most about the show is they never show the end results. For example in one episode Paul and Bogart find a dog sled but what you don't see is the end result of whatever they did with it. Did they try to sell it in their store? Did they sell it to the so-called expert? Did they throw it in the trash? Out of the 36 episodes in each season it would have been nice if they did a re-cap show once in a while that showed what happened to all this "stuff" in the end. In one episode Cindy eludes to how they recently sold a similar table and chairs for a nice profit but there was never a flashback or anything similar. In that episode Cindy only mentioned it one time and then the editing quickly changed to something else.
Look, the show is light-hearted and the characters are fun. If you take this show too seriously you are in for trouble but if you just want to get your mind of things for 30 minutes then give it a look.
