Obsession (2023)
Total rip-off of Damage
Is it just me? In my personal opinion this movie is a complete rip-off of the film Damage with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. But without any of the originality, pathos, brilliant script and taut atmosphere. I stuck with it in the expectation that it would surprise me but just ended up fast forwarding to the end.
Derivative and poorly scripted, in my personal view this is a very poor imitation of a seminal film which when it was released, did not receive the accolades for script, acting and sheer shock factor that it deserved. It took my breath away. Watch the original and decide for yourself.
The North Water (2021)
Derivative. Disappointing.
Tried several times to watch this but found it wanting, especially after seeing similar productions such as The Terror, which was splendid, perfectly cast and excellently scripted.
The North Water for me lacked gravitas and intent, and I soon became irritated by the unbelievable characters, poor script and lack of atmosphere.
The Terror (2018)
Extraordinary. Compelling. Visceral
I've watched Series One at least 4 times.
This is one of the most compelling dramas I've seen in a very long time. I'm very hard to please and will switch off in the first two minutes if the screenplay doesn't take hold. This made me cry which rarely happens. It's a history brought to life as a testament to the extreme horrors and sacrifices that the crews of Erebus and Terror endured to find the North West passage. Such sacrifices cannot be imagined in our day and age and they should not be forgotten. The darkness that enveloped the crews together with the lack of knowledge of a hostile land is visceral, uncomfortable and uncompromising.
Screenplay, tempo, atmosphere, acting, suspense are all extraordinary.
Extremely powerful performances from every single person involved to my mind but notably Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, Paul Ready, Adam Nagaitis, Nieve Nielsen and Liam Garrigan.
This series pulls no punches. Nor should it.
Brimstone (2016)
A powerful, harrowing and emotionally challenging story
An extremely powerful movie supported by a very believable cast. Both Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning are eminently credible in this dark story. Not for the faint hearted, this film contains themes of incest, brutality, and religious fanaticism taken to the extreme for personal gain.
Fractured (2019)
Spellbinding
I'm a fierce critic who doesn't suffer fools. I rarely write reviews and can spot a bad movie after about 30 seconds. This film is mesmerising, startling and shocking; the tension in the story will keep even the most hardened critic guessing until the denouement. I was gripped, confused, and happy to second-guess right up until the end.
Sam Worthington's best.
